AIBU to cook a 1KG chicken for 5 people at Christmas?

ChickenChristmasDinner · 01/11/2025 17:57

Our family have voted to have chicken at Christmas this year. We normally have a 1KG chicken for 4 people. Two people have a breast and the other two have a leg each.

However, at Christmas, there will be 5 of us at the table. I was thinking that as there will be starters, sides and a pudding at the feast , then our usual 1KG chicken might stretch to 5 people?

Am I being over optimistic?

Is 1kg chicken a thing? I cook chicken roasts for 2 and cook a 1.5kg chicken and have some leftovers.

Us too!

ThejoyofNC · 01/11/2025 18:51

You're serving a pre cooked chicken? And you think that's the nicest chicken you've had? Things are starting to make sense.

That chicken is already cooked OP. 2 of them in at the same time should be heated in less than an hour.

ETA I now think OP is on the wind up.

Edited

I just follow the cooking instructions. It says to heat it for an hour, despite already being cooked.

I have tried roasting many non-precooked chickens. However, I find that this Sainsburys precooked chicken is far more succulent and tasty.

A pre-cooked, bagged chicken from a supermarket is "succulent and tasty" and the "best chicken you've ever had"? Really? Confused

Snugglemonkey · 01/11/2025 18:53

I nothing so. I roast chicken twice that to feed 4 of us. Two are children.

I'm guessing OP is a terrible cook. Which is fine, plenty of them out there. But if your food isn't the best then you should at least make sure you're not stingy on the portions!!

You need to ask for a cookbook for Christmas @ChickenChristmasDinner

Reheated chicken is bad enough 🤮 but for guests and a special occasion is another level! Grim.

Allthecoloursoftherainbow4 · 01/11/2025 18:54

Its just sweetened with a sugar marinade OP. Its just cooked chicken with a sugary sauce.

ChickenChristmasDinner · 01/11/2025 18:55

WonderlandWasAllAHoax · 01/11/2025 18:49

That's already cooked though, so you just need to re-heat it?

Yes, that is correct. It takes an hour to reheat.

I knew I would be ridiculed as any post on AIBU is fair game. I promise you that I am not on a wind up!

Who are you inviting? Five sparrows? Nowhere near enough. Unless this is a tactic to make sure they don’t return next year.

I can't imagine wanting re-heated, pre-cooked chicken in a sugar marinade for Christmas, but you do you, I guess Confused

I buy a 1.5kg chicken most weeks that does DHs lunches for 4/5 days and maybe a lunch each for ds and I. It's labelled as a medium chicken. Where are you getting a 1kg chicken? Could you not just get a 2kg chicken, push the boat out? It is Christmas....

Sorry but that's not going to be enough imo.

Yes, the ones that say "turkey" on the packaging.

A 1kg chicken for Christmas dinner. Ho jolly ho.

“There's an old joke - um... two elderly women are at a Catskill mountain resort, and one of 'em says, "Boy, the food at this place is really terrible." The other one says, "Yeah, I know; and such small portions." Well, that's essentially how I feel about life - full of loneliness, and misery, and suffering, and unhappiness, and it's all over much too quickly.”

Just buy a bigger one. Having leftovers for Boxing Day is pretty essential.

Bellavida99 · 01/11/2025 18:59

8oz of chicken each including bones - hahaha no way

You don't need to be a good cook to stick some oil/herbs on a chicken and put it in the oven though!

BebbanburgIsMine · 01/11/2025 18:59

Arrrrrrragghhh · 01/11/2025 18:01

You need leftovers for sandwiches and Boxing Day.

That’s the stuff of nightmares to me.

There’s just the two of us, and our cat, I just buy 3 chicken breast fillets (don’t like turkey) so there’s no leftovers, no waste. I absolutely cannot stand leftovers, have never eaten them.

TheCurious0range · 01/11/2025 18:59

I'd missed the cooked chicken you buy we got one of those as a sub once on a delivery and I thought as its mainly for sandwiches/salads it'll be fine. It really wasn't, it was dense and had an odd flavour. Just buy a decent sized chicken and roast it!

Newsenmum · 01/11/2025 19:00

Surely you want leftovers? Not enough at all.
