AIBU to cook a 1KG chicken for 5 people at Christmas?

Our family have voted to have chicken at Christmas this year. We normally have a 1KG chicken for 4 people. Two people have a breast and the other two have a leg each.

However, at Christmas, there will be 5 of us at the table. I was thinking that as there will be starters, sides and a pudding at the feast , then our usual 1KG chicken might stretch to 5 people?

Am I being over optimistic?

Omg! I will buy two then!

We particularly like a cooked whole pre marinated chicken that you cook in a bag. I buy it from Sainsburys. It only comes as up to 1.1KG. I have tried other whole chickens, but this particular one is so tasty.

Hopefully it will work ok to roast 2 chickens at the same time in the Christmas oven!

Yeah but how much of that 1.1kg is edible?
I believe a good rule of thumb is 225g of meat per person, and you're not getting close to that with 5 people and 1.1kg chicken, some of is is bone (obviously) and then there's the weird chicken underneath it that I assume no one really eats.

Are the people who get the leg happy with just having a leg?

SorryNotSorry00 · 03/11/2025 00:57

Are you planning on a vegetarian “feast” this year?

RavenhairedRachel · 03/11/2025 09:10

1KG for 5 people it seems a bit frugal. It can't be much more to get a bigger one

What else do you have? I have a tiny bit of turkey on a plate with roast potatoes, parsnips, carrots, pigs in. Blankets, couliflower cheese, gammon, red cabbage. Etc etc.. I don’t need a massive amount of the turkey.

I agree with this.

I think Christmas is all about the sides, so could probably get away with NO chicken/turkey/nut roast, but obviously it depends what you want to eat.

I just buy chicken breasts, then everyone gets the same.

Don’t be stingy. It’s Xmas get a bigger bird. Nothing worse than a tight arse at the food table

A 1kg chicken between 5!!Just buy 2 chickens. The fact you are even asking shows you know it is realky not enough. What if someone wants a sandwich later?

Never mind the sarnies, they would not have had a decent sized meal for dinner!

OneDaringLurker · 02/11/2025 20:52

The ones full of steroids?
(As chickens are not normally these sizes...)

I thought that the chicken breasts I saw in Aldi recently must have come off a very large, ostrich size, bird! The would probably be half the size when cooked and the was had evaporated.

madaboutpurple · 03/11/2025 11:26

I would suggest at least two chickens because then you might be able to make a chicken and veg pie or a curry .

RaininSummer · 03/11/2025 13:19

Do two and use the extra for sandwiches, curry or whatever .

pollymere · 03/11/2025 13:46

That sounds measly. Either buy an XL chicken or buy a pack of legs for £2 and cook those as well.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 03/11/2025 16:42

We have that kind of chicken for a picky tea with coleslaw and French bread and salad. I'd be absolutely devastated if that was presented to me as Christmas dinner!

Just buy one of those XXL chickens rather than the usual one.

Isn’t that a turkey?

OP, it’s always good to have some leftover meat for Boxing Day and beyond to go with your bubble and squeak. Get two chickens, or a chicken and something else.

You can get xxl chickens - you just need to usually order them from butchers . That’s what we do

KnickerlessParsons · 03/11/2025 16:55

You know xxl chickens get too heavy for their legs and their legs break?

I eat meat but I’d draw the line at that.

Horrendous. No one should be chicken like that
Disgraceful

Didn't know that where's animal welfare in that?

@Thesteinwaysyouvebeenleadingmeon Awful isn’t it
so many people mindlessly eat meat , they have to have it in every meal or it’s not a meal in their book, and they want it cheap, so some unscrupulous providers will do whatever it takes to supply as cheaply as possible and fuck animal welfare

Just get 2

I just follow the cooking instructions. It says to heat it for an hour, despite already being cooked.

I have tried roasting many non-precooked chickens. However, I find that this Sainsburys precooked chicken is far more succulent and tasty.

You had me at ‘succulent’ 🫣🤣🤣🤣🤣

MMAS · 14/11/2025 14:24

Larger chickens unless bought from a farmers shop / proper butchers or similar (i.e. not a chain store) tend to be full of water - try one out before Christmas and then decide. If your family likes leftovers then two smaller chickens might be the route to go.

WhisperingAngelisnotbad · 14/11/2025 14:59

Or you could roast a chicken and a gammon together, so there is a choice and naive ham for lovely Boxing Day sarnies

Elsvieta · 14/11/2025 18:19

ItsNeverNoReason · 01/11/2025 18:20

No one really wants a chicken leg for Christmas dinner. Just buy a pack of 5 chicken breasts.

I would! Leg meat's so much tastier than breast.
