Could there be stricter rules on dog ownership?

Thinking of getting a dog and came across this article? Could there be stricter rules and regulations on dog ownership?
Many, like the RVC, believe there should be. With so many pet dogs in society – a significant proportion of which have poor social and training skills – many feel there needs to be more interventions to emphasise the importance of responsible dog ownership. We are already seeing more restrictions on dogs in public spaces in the UK. Councils are frequently adopting Public Space Protection Orders, to ban dogs from areas such as public parks, beaches and even car parks.
This is largely as a result of too many people allowing their dogs to foul public spaces and creating tension by walking too many dogs at once. Indeed, in many towns and cities – especially in tourist areas, the numbers of people visiting with a dog has become vastly more noticeable.

Oh, god yes! I forgot about the bingo card 🤣. But you never know, in a couple of hours the thread may be full of photos of lovely doggies!

Yes! Flood it with pics of our lovely dogs 😀

CoffeeLipstickKeys · 28/10/2025 19:22

Yes, go on. Post pictures of Phoebe and Henry and prove my point with gushing anthropomorphisms

My oh dear remain in place, my head is static

Do you look at a frail and elderly person wrapped up in a thick jumper when it is mild out and think the same?

Let me state the obvious
A dog, is not human
A human isn’t a dog
An older adult wearing a jumper has no impact and isn’t comparable to a dog wearing a jumper

I actually think that dogs and small children should not be in the same household, but no one will ever dare introduce that regulation.

Certainly dogs that are deemed too dangerous to be in public without a muzzle (like an XL bully) shouldn’t be in a house with children. There’s absolutely no logical justification for saying they’re too dangerous to the public, but fine for a toddler to live with.

And an elderly dog with no body fat needs a jumper. But you think 'oh dear' at it and think I am anthropomorphising my dog.

If treating her well and making sure she is warm and comfy is somehow a bad thing, then I am guilty as charged. And I am not ashamed and wont be shamed by people like you about it.

Shamed? No. You don’t need to reach for the psychobabble owners manual, just yet

What impact does a dog wearing a jumper have? Apart from keeping it warm?

You're very odd

vodkaredbullgirl · 28/10/2025 19:38

Oh great 😆

Are you secretly a fur baby owner @CoffeeLipstickKeys , just off for a pawsecco with your lovely puppy wuppy? Your posts are becoming a little too intense to be completely believable.

I do love the idea of dna testing dog shit though, I’m all for locking up the buggers who don’t pick up, or worse, hang the stuff on trees.

Ignoring the rabid dog haters and back to OPs point.
Yes there should be stricter rules:
Insurance should be compulsory,
Signing up to some sort of training, even if it is only a six session puppy class. would be good.
Dog owners should always be armed with at least two poo bags, as is the law in other countries, great idea.

If you have a skinny breed or old, sick, infirm dog etc; you should provide then with appropriate protection from the weather.
Being a pet dog is ultimately a form of slavery, we the owners should be held responsible for keeping them in satisfactory conditions.

Bluevelvetsofa · 28/10/2025 19:40

As I understand it, many of the pet organisations are very aware that the changes in dog ownership brought about by Covid are the reason for the situation we have now. There were exponentially more puppies bought at that time, because walking was what you could do and those puppies are now adult dogs and some people are getting fed up with them, so they’re left alone, not trained and sometimes ill treated.

If dogs are trained, cared for, socialised, that’s fine. So many aren’t though. Neighbours of ours have four large strong dogs. The dogs take them for a walk, rather than the other way round. They’re bouncy, jump up all the time and terrify the life out of me. When a dog is big enough to reach your shoulders as it jumps, it’s scary.

Someones desire to have twice as many dogs in their house as people, means that my enjoyment of my home, garden and environment is compromised.

Sends their blood pressure sky high. You know what helps with that? Having a dog

And you’re somewhat defensive? Oh no! has someone been mean to your fur baby? Oh no? Is your dog not going to graduate dog school with honours cum laude?

House! You said rabid dog haters
Of course, anyone not effusing about doggies must be a hater. And a rabid one at that

YeOldeGreyhound · 28/10/2025 19:45

Well, here is my furbaby and my mum's gorgeous boy. Both greyhounds and both needing coats when it is cold.
My dog is nearly 15 and a half (which is well over what greyhounds live to), and the other is 7.

Could there be stricter rules on dog ownership?

When I left Gibraltar they started enforcing dog DNA testing for registration, ownership and to fine owners whos shit was found and not bagged up. £400 per fine!!!

Brilliant idea!!

I'm against Digital ID, but support it to the hilt for dogs!

For your information, @CoffeeLipstickKeys , my dogs graduate summa cum laude, honours is far too basic for them.

Where are the resources for people to be picking up stray poos to take for DNA testing?

vodkaredbullgirl · 28/10/2025 19:51

Waiting for another dog hater to come up, but they are bogged down with bog paper 😆
