Could there be stricter rules on dog ownership?

Thinking of getting a dog and came across this article? Could there be stricter rules and regulations on dog ownership?
Many, like the RVC, believe there should be. With so many pet dogs in society – a significant proportion of which have poor social and training skills – many feel there needs to be more interventions to emphasise the importance of responsible dog ownership. We are already seeing more restrictions on dogs in public spaces in the UK. Councils are frequently adopting Public Space Protection Orders, to ban dogs from areas such as public parks, beaches and even car parks.
This is largely as a result of too many people allowing their dogs to foul public spaces and creating tension by walking too many dogs at once. Indeed, in many towns and cities – especially in tourist areas, the numbers of people visiting with a dog has become vastly more noticeable.

Essentially ,there has been a significant increase in anthropomorphism
Adults waffling about their fur babies. Describing self as parent to a fucking dog
Adults codependent upon dogs and creating an emotional mess were adults are over enmeshed with dogs
They take their slobbery flea hounds to cafe, coffee shop and just expect everyone to suck it up and be effusive as they are

Oh god yes. Bring in tighter regulation now!

I swear we never used to have so many irresponsible owners. I totally agree that there should be stronger rules around dog ownership 100%

My neighbour has a poodle that yaps at the nearest sound. If he leaves the front door open it comes rushing out and runs towards you, yapping and growling. You have to turn away to try and avoid making eye contact. I worry about being bitten, people cannot let their children use the walkway unsupervised anymore and my neighbour sees absolutely no problem. It's just lil baby speak to call her back.

Just the other day I was walking along a walkway in a public park and a woman was walking a large dog. The dog scooted down to poop, did a large dollop and the owner had no poop bags. Because I was walking by and looked at her, the owner, obviously embarrassed said: oh naughty boy! Yeah right, you knew full well before you took him for a walk you had no bags and no intention of using any and you probably won't buy them and this is probably a regular occurrence. I walked further along and there was a mother with her little one walking along the same hill of grass, I felt queasy just thinking about the possibility of her stepping in it🤢

Unfortunately a lot of fuckwits have dogs, and they love their dogs and have lost the plot.

Completely agree. Very unfortunate and does the animal no favours.

Yeltw · 28/10/2025 18:51

I love dogs but there are too many irresponsible owners, so I’d like to see some kind of tighter regulation. We had dogs attack our sheep this summer and the owner had zero control, no recall over their dogs and zero common sense to keep them on lead and under control.

BelatrixLestrange · 28/10/2025 18:55

I fully agree. My youngest is terrified of dogs because they are everywhere, completely uncontrolled. There is dog shit everywhere on our route to school.

They should be on lead at all times and there should be fines for dog fouling. All dogs should be microchipped and all shoiild have to be muzzled whilst in public.

They are not babies. You are not their mummy/daddy. They are a pet. Grow up.

HeddaGarbled · 28/10/2025 18:56

I actually think that dogs and small children should not be in the same household, but no one will ever dare introduce that regulation.

CoffeeLipstickKeys · 28/10/2025 18:56

I live in a neighbourhood were people have doggy day care that costs same as nursery
They have dog Nannie’s, house sitters, dog spa, dog pampering
And stop putting coats and jumpers on dogs. They really look ghastly and it’s unnecessary

Tutorpuzzle · 28/10/2025 19:03

I think there should be stricter rules on who is allowed to have children.

I pity the children brought up in households displaying the venom, vitriol and envy shown on this thread.

OonaStubbs · 28/10/2025 19:04

Bring back the dog license. And dog wardens.

Now that I do agree with.

YeOldeGreyhound · 28/10/2025 19:08

Believe it or not, not everyone with a dog is an irresponsible arse. Just because I have a dog does not mean I like seeing yappy dogs in cafes or dog shit on the pavement.

I have an elderly greyhound who has no body fat and absolutely needs a jumper.
So you can bugger off with your thoughts on thinking it looks ghastly. Her comfort is more important than your pearl clutching.

Examples of venom, vitriol, and envy please
You know just because one doesn’t effuse about fur babies or head tilt when dog parents gush about their dog doesn’t in itself render one envious, vitriolic or venomous
It is permissible, to observe the codependency and for profit dog services, dog taxis, dog spa and think it’s all a bit much

I have no pearls, however your dog has a jumper. Oh dear

There will be some incoming. This thread will be a dog whistle (lol) to some very vocal dog hates soon enough.
I have my bingo card out ready.
Give it a couple of pages, and there will be talk of dog anuses. Dog haters are obsessed with dog bums.

Yes, and I said why. If you think 'oh dear' to that then you need to give your head a wobble.

Tutorpuzzle · 28/10/2025 19:15

Oh, god yes! I forgot about the bingo card 🤣. But you never know, in a couple of hours the thread may be full of photos of lovely doggies!

I agree with what you say generally about jumpers on dogs but there are absolutely dogs who need jumpers/coats and that persons greyhound will be one of them.

Wolfpa · 28/10/2025 19:16

I come from a place where you have to pay tax for pets as well as abide to more regulations when it comes to pet ownership. I am all for something similar here. Owning a pet is a luxury that people need to take responsibility for.

CoffeeLipstickKeys · 28/10/2025 19:16

My oh dear remain in place, my head is static

FozzieP · 28/10/2025 19:17

We always had dogs until the last one died a few years ago but we treated them as dogs and they knew their place. These modern dog owners are treating their dogs like children - and spoilt brats at that. They have very little control over them, talk to them in baby voices and even - believe me I've seen this - let them share their food in nice hotels. It's madness and a symptom of what this formally stiff upper lip country has come to - populated by a lot of sentimental idiots with no backbone and no idea how to discipline either a dog or a child.

Tutorpuzzle · 28/10/2025 19:18

Oh, come on @CoffeeLipstickKeys , you can do better than that! Those bingo cards won’t fill themselves you know 🤣.

CombatBarbie · 28/10/2025 19:20

When I left Gibraltar they started enforcing dog DNA testing for registration, ownership and to fine owners whos shit was found and not bagged up. £400 per fine!!!

CoffeeLipstickKeys · 28/10/2025 19:20

Conversely, the fur parents will rock up with effusive stories of their emotional crutch dogs ,who the whole community love and how very dare anyone say anything about any dog

Inevitably, some fur parent will inevitably say
Oh humans are capable of such evil
Some humans should never have children and oh oh we need a child licence! A parent licence
