Has everyone forgotten Jonathan Ross and Sachsgate?

I love traitors but i detest Jonathon Ross. I clearly remember his vile phone calls to Andrew Sachs about his grandaughter. Along with his accomplice Russel Brand - vile, laddish behaviour. How is he even still working? Does he have mates in high places - people's careers have gone under for much less.
Also he makes my skin crawl and is ruining a damn good show.

I’d rather defend someone than make up baseless shit. He made the phone call. We all agree it was appalling. That is pretty much the only fact.

You can almost hear the salivating at calling him a pervert, making up memories of how he was awful to Charlotte Church, that he didn’t apologise to Georgina, that it was on live TV, that Sachs was a holocaust survivor (he wasn’t), that he was ‘almost 30’ when he met his wife. All untrue.

I don't like him because he is clearly a sexist knobend. He shows it very openly in his shows and I find his humour childish and rude. You can try to gaslight me that he is an angel but I will use my life experience to know misogynistic behaviour when I see it broadcast to the country.

I do agree he shouldn't be shunned by those who know him. I won't ever watch him, but that's different.

I do think it being a 'joke' on live TV makes a difference though.

It wasn’t on tv. Live or otherwise.
it was a pre-recorded radio show.

Oh the saintly haters are not going to let the truth stand in the way of their nastiness

captainoctopus · 18/10/2025 22:38

He isn't good with paperwork. He likes old cars. That's all I know about him.

Krylek · 18/10/2025 22:40

It happened, it wasn’t nice, he apologised, and I’m sure he regrets it.

What do you want to happen? Prison? Him to walk the streets self-flagellating to atone for his sins?

Shit happens and people make mistakes.

Yousay55 · 18/10/2025 22:46

I think of this every time I see him, op. Some people just get away with awful things.

MsJinks · 18/10/2025 22:47

I remember it, and mention it about Ross at times if others don’t seem to - though it hardly comes up regularly. I did mention it when more stuff came out about Brand, but it has sort of paled for him with the rest of his vile behaviour.
I thought Ross got away with it more at the time, ie got back to TV faster, as he apologised and Brand didn’t.
Still it was a disgraceful thing to do and I don’t know why anyone wanted to keep watching him or employing him in his roles, not so much now as I don’t think what he did 20 years ago should necessarily be held against him but how he kept going and getting better and better gigs after a very brief spell off air - like he’d been caught shoplifting or smoked a joint or something. He just should have had to stay off screen or very minor stuff in my opinion.
I hear ‘it was different back then’ but it was the 21st century not the 1950s or even 1980s - we expected better by that time, and if we look back and think we didn’t as an excuse for this sort of thing it will never end.
I didn’t know his wife was so young, seems he is just a genuine sleazebag with more chances than many to act on it - great - we can look back in 20 years time and say oh it was different in the 2020s I guess 🤢

OwlBeThere · 18/10/2025 22:54

If We’re going to judge JR for his actions and his friendship with RB. Surely it’s only fair that we also judge Andrew Sachs for his refusal to speak to his granddaughter after the incident and his friendship with John Cleese who is hardly a nice man.

and surely we should talk about the character of Manuel and how it is extremely derogatory to Spanish people, which Andrew sachs was not? Not sure that would fly today.

see? We can twist just about any narrative to make it fit our world view if we want to.

personally I think RB is an awful human being, John Cleese is also a dick, Jonathan Ross and Andrew Sachs I can’t really bring myself to care about much either way.

NetZeroZealot · 18/10/2025 22:58

Thank you OP for reminding me why I dislike him so much.

DarkRootsBlue · 18/10/2025 23:00

CoffeeCantata · 18/10/2025 20:29

The past was certainly a different country!

I remember JR embarrassing several female guests with his crude sexual remarks and suggestions - Michelle Pfeifer was one. I felt ashamed of British TV on her behalf. She was clearly shocked.

Also, his brother Paul was on a reality show of some kind with the glamour model Abi someone..can’t remember her surname but she was very famous 15 years ago - and he just kept bullying her about her ‘beaky’ nose until she was extremely uncomfortable. His point was that she wasn’t the vision of perfection he thought she should have been. He was very, very far from an oil painting himself.🙄

I hope those times are gone.

What did he say to Michelle Pfeiffer? She seems to have been on his shows a few times, when was it?

Paul Ross is talentless and sleazy, I’ll give you that one.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 18/10/2025 22:14

But the woman maintained that she racially abused her, along with violently attacking her because she tried to stop her stealing the lollipops she was selling

This isnt the same as the JR thing at all and is disgusting

How can we TRUTHFULLY know what or wasn't said in the toilets that night? The violence was despicable but I believe Cheryl complied with punishment(s) set out by the court and has moved on with her life.

Should everyone who gets involved in a scuffle on a night out be banned from working for life? That'd be a heck of a lot of UC to be paid out!

Createausername1970 · 18/10/2025 23:01

I am in no way condoning JR. I thought that phone call was ridiculous.

But I will say what I said at the time. To the best of my knowledge his show wasn't live, so my understanding is that phonecall could have been cut, or the whole show pulled.

If that is correct then someone other than them passed it for broadcast. Whoever that was is just as culpable.

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 18/10/2025 23:13

Never liked him before, but can't bear to watch him ever since that phone call. It wasn't just a bad taste joke, it was a nasty bullying derogatory phone call that dropped a bomb into a family relationship. And twenty years ago wasn't prehistoric. It was shocking behaviour then. I honestly don't know how anyone who remembers the phone call can watch him without recoiling.

Ratafia · 18/10/2025 23:18

It was 20 years ago, and massively blown up by the Daily Mail. It was also clear at the time that Sachs wasn't that bothered till the Mail made a fuss, when he jumped happily onto the bandwagon.

Alittlefrustrated · 18/10/2025 23:21

Whappy · 18/10/2025 20:04

It was awful and I have not forgotten. I am also surprised that there is little comment in the da t he started dating his wife when she was 16 and he was nearly 30. I seem to recall he made some bizarre comment about him being a bit of a dad to her. Makes me shudder.

That's not true - there's only a 9 year age gap.

RoseAlone · 18/10/2025 23:22

It was a whole lot of nonsensical at the time too.

NotVWoolf · 18/10/2025 23:39

JR was always a sleaze bag when interviewing women. He was unbelievably misogynistic to Carol Vorderman. The Andrew Sachs phone call was revolting and puerile. The tone of their language and attitude towards women was horrible and the ‘bantz’ suggestion is to shut up women who protest at being objectified.

It wasnt a scuffle, it was an attack on someone providing a service, who asked her not to steal

We can believe either party. The court threw out the racism claim because it was reported after she spoke to The Mirror, not before, apparently. That doesnt make her a liar imo

Outside9 · 18/10/2025 23:50

Posts like this reaffirm the notion that people do not genuinely believe in concepts like redemption, forgiveness and rehabilitation.

Let's get rid of prisons and bring back death penalty

But if you'd been attacked by someone and you thought it was because of your ethnicity, would you not mention this when first reporting the crime? I think I'd be very upset and even more so if I'd been personally targeted.

The problem with words is that mud sticks, words are difficult to prove (if not recorded) and in some cases, reputations could be tarnished by false accusations (not saying that this is the case with this case but it's hard to know what to believe with he said/she said reports). Cheryl took her punishment and hasn't offended again since. Isn't that what justice is about, to punish and prevent further occurrences of criminality?

Totally. Seems it’s one mistake and you’re done according to the scorched earth lynch mob. Let’s hope they never fuck up.

I dont think Cheryl shouldn't have a career

But I dont have to like her

And I dont think that this is similar to what jr did, this is thuggish and racist and shouldn't be forgotten or written off as mistaken banter

Just because the woman attacked by Cheryl, who was probably in shock and highly distressed didnt report it in a perfect way, doesnt mean shes being dishonest imo

FightingFish · 18/10/2025 19:55

The reason that Russell Brand isn’t on TV now is because of accusations (and charges) of sex offences, prior to that he was doing well in TV/films. Most people forgot about the Sachs incident years ago.

RB is in the USA and has a tv show.

Livelovebehappy · 19/10/2025 01:01

The whole family are very dysfunctional. His daughters are very odd. And I read that he only showers every two or three weeks weeks?!

Blinky21 · 19/10/2025 01:11

Not forgotten, think he's vile and a pretty shit talkshow host
