Has everyone forgotten Jonathan Ross and Sachsgate?

I love traitors but i detest Jonathon Ross. I clearly remember his vile phone calls to Andrew Sachs about his grandaughter. Along with his accomplice Russel Brand - vile, laddish behaviour. How is he even still working? Does he have mates in high places - people's careers have gone under for much less.
Also he makes my skin crawl and is ruining a damn good show.

What happened on the shows you mentioned?

It's disgraceful that he never apologised to Andrew Sachs' granddaughter Georgina. He apologised to the public and his bosses for the incident but didn't care one iota for the embarrassment and upset he caused her.

Both he and Brand apologised to her, and she accepted their apologies.

Never liked Jonathan Ross. He was a good enough interviewer when interviewing men but with women, it might start ok tl then in about 2 minutes he would just be letching all over them and not really listening to them or asking good questions to elicit interesting answers, just teeing up the next sleazy double entendre, if he could be bothered to even do that.

Gosh yes this is exactly how I remember him from the late 90s/early 00s… grotesque sleazy double entendres with the female guests, lots of end-of-the-pier eyebrow waggling and smutty ‘jokes’. All pretty cringeworthy even back then but (thankfully) completely un-broadcastable now. Sachsgate was out of the same box, really, just him doing childish sleazy ‘Bantz’ and not caring how it landed. I was wondering the same thing as OP when I saw him on Traitors: how has he managed to get away without some of those awful clips (of which I’m confident there must be many) re-surfacing?!

SuffraJET · 18/10/2025 21:36

He is creepy and lecherous haven't watched his show for years but tv is still full of them isn't it.

The circle i'm trying to square is how creepy he was towards Charlotte Church when she was about 16 (i think will check) on his show.

Bet she hates him still.

Sal820 · 18/10/2025 21:38

A week later, on 5 November 2008, UK television channel Five broadcast an hour-length documentary on the incident, titled Russell & Ross: What the F* Was All That About? featuring an exclusive interview with Baillie. Baillie stated in the interview that "I think it's way out of proportion what's happened and I don't hate either of them – I don't at all", going on to say "I think they're really talented comedians and I think a world without Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand would be a very sad, dull place."

She concluded by saying that Brand needed to learn about respecting women, while Ross should just think before he speaks, "I don't have any harder feeling than that." Baillie also made clear that she would not object to the reinstatement of both Brand and Ross.

lifeonmars100 · 18/10/2025 21:38

When does Brand go on trial? Guess I should not be lazy and google it. As for Ross, he was the father of daughters when he engaged in this purile "prank" what an example to set in terms of misogyny and nastiness

’To err is human, too forgive is divine’

He made a mistake, he apologised, gave up his commitments and moved on. So should we. If he repeated his behaviours then that’s different but honestly this cleansing of anyone who doesn’t meet a perceived ‘good enough’ is just odd to me and where does it leave people who do commit mistakes? No ability to rehabilitate? Ever?

I am happy to just not like people and choose to not watch what they are in. I hate ‘cancelling’. If we get it wrong it destroys peoples whole livelihoods.

He never apologised to Andrew Sachs' granddaughter though, as I said earlier. I saw her being interviewed on a podcast a year or so ago and she was clearly still upset about that. He didn't bother to contact her at all, or even mention her in the apology he made at the start of his TV show. He apologised to the BBC and the listeners, but they weren't the victims. He only made an apology because he didn't want to lose his job.

Those who do like JR, what do you like about him?!I am genuinely curious.

I don't like him. I stopped watching his shows before Sachsgate. I find him clichéd, formulaic and cringe. But other people like his shiz and professionalism otherwise he'd have disappeared by now.🤷‍♀️

He is interesting in the Traitors.😁

Alright, live radio, then.

It wasn't live radio either, it was prerecorded which meant that producers etc thought it was fine. Also, nobody cared until the Mail ran a story about it a WEEK later.

PrancingBean · 18/10/2025 21:18

But imagine if I, a lowly retail worker, had called a customer and done this? I’m also lovely to my wife and children (baseline decency btw.) I have never given Alan Carr a break because I work at Sainsburys. I’m kind and generous. I donate to several charities out of my minimum wage. Can I do whatever I like?

Well you certainly wouldn't be ripped apart by a bunch of strangers on Mumsnet!

I can’t stand him but I also dislike the way people judge somebody for something that happened almost 20 years ago. People in the public eye can’t escape their mistakes but I bet most of us have something somewhere in our backgrounds that wouldn’t look great when published in the media and our flaws highlighted to everyone.

This. ^ I am pretty neutral about JR. Don't love him don't hate him, but I do roll my eyes at people dragging stuff up from almost 20 years ago - nearly 18 actually but still a long time ago. It's like people who drag up Cheryl from Girls Aloud's bathroom incident (when she attacked a cleaner when she drunk). It was just out of the 1990s, and she got punished for it. Get over it FFS! Hmm

JR was suspended from the BBC for 3 months, then didn't have his contract renewed in 2010, and had to leave.

As I said with Cheryl, JR took a punishment, it was 18 years ago, get over it.

Again wrong! He apologised and resigned. I assume he didn't apologise to Georgina because he wasn't the one who slept with her.

He played the game and it’s paid off

DarkRootsBlue · 18/10/2025 21:49

@Toucan123from Wiki re interview with Georgina.
“Neil further asked if the apology she received had helped, she replied yes, stating "definitely" to the follow-up comment from Neil of "better to get it than not get it?" When asked finally on the row by Neil if she thought the apologies from Brand and Ross were genuine, she replied that she thought Ross' was, but the fact that Brand had joked about the row on his later tour "negated" his apology.”

God this thread is like whackamole! Charlotte Church made her TV debut on Jonathan Ross's show at 12 with her aunt - again her big break. He was not remotely creepy and there is no suggestion that she has any problems with him - why would she?

Yes GIF

She was cleared of any charges of racism. But don't let facts get in the way eh?!

Teaforthetotal · 18/10/2025 21:54

Fair enough that some people on this thread enjoyed his programmes and interviews. Interesting though that a large amount of posters here, myself included find him problematic as a result of past behaviour.Shows how times can change, for the better in this instance I believe.
Maybe this was some of the thinking around casting him as a traitor in the current series, as he's tarnished.

For goodness sake, he made a bit of a naughty joke, do you really think he should be sacked and banned from employment permanently because of that?

I believe the incident was back in 2008/9, before people became instantly offended by everything and lost their sense of forgiveness.

Jonathan Ross is a quality broadcaster who has worked his way up to the top, not gotten by on diversity hire quotas or because he once appeared on Love Island or some other vile reality television show. He has conducted brilliant interviews with some of Hollywood's biggest stars, including Catherine Zeta-Jones, Paul Rudd & interviewed the biggest named musicians such as Sir Elton John KBE. He brings in high viewing figures and his name sells advertisement slots. ITV aren't going to turn their back on that because once upon a time he left a silly voice message.

I know right. It's so funny - NOT - how some people just make up complete falsehoods to try to discredit someone they have decided they dislike. 🙄

When people do certain things they should not have done, and get into trouble, some do apologise purely to get a lesser punishment, and don't mean it. Jonathan may have done this. But he may have meant it. He may have been genuinely sorry. You can't possibly know. You're not him.

FirstCuppa · 18/10/2025 21:59

Clearly some family members on the board 😅
Or one person who simply cannot comprehend how many women clearly dislike this man, for his shows, behaviour and actions.

ramonaquimby · 18/10/2025 21:59

It's also ok to not like some people with public personas for any reason they choose

I had forgotten, but now I remember. Vile person. Not keen on Tom Daley, either.
