National Trust & tampons

NT have made free tampons available in the gents' toilets in a castle in the Lake District. Not unisex toilets, but actual gents.

Not just any tampons, but vegan tampons (WTF are they?).
And they're also available in the ladies.

YABU They are demonstrating what a kind, caring organisation they are, & covering their arses.

YANBU They are bonkers, tossers... add your own words.

Maybe its a generation thing. The younger generations really aren't upset by it. Lots of places are moving to gender neutral toilet type stalls now and I expect this will become less of a thing as time goes on. I think you are also overestimating the threat men pose. I have used mens toilets in my youth (clubs etc.) and the men were always very nice about it.

If men in toilets are so nice then why are so many parents of boys fearful of allowing their sons into the gents by themselves as young boys?

Whether the younger generations are upset by it or not (I think you’re underestimating how many hate it) is actually irrelevant as it’s unlawful for a woman to enter a male space and vice versa. If a toilet is marked as mixed sex that’s fine, it’s lawful, everyone knows what the set up is.

Single sex means single sex.

Ddakji · 10/10/2025 19:20

If you think that men are fine with female people in their spaces you are wrong, and completely dismissive of the privacy and dignity of men, and also pretty dismissive that if men discover someone female in their space she is in danger.

For those reasons, this is all kinds of wrong and if those toilets are labelled GENTS (or equivalent) then it is unlawful for anyone female to be in that space. As well as UNSAFE.

My ex - someone who literally gave birth before my eyes and who was unambiguously and unapologetically a woman - would sometimes use the gents if the line for the ladies was too long and she couldn't be arsed to wait. She'd have laughed in your face at the suggestion that it was both illegal and unsafe.

OneCleverEagle · 10/10/2025 19:42

SpaceRaccoon · 10/10/2025 19:38

although this will result in 5’10” muscly, broad, hairy, bearded, bald people with penises wearing men’s clothing using women’s toilets on occasion.

If that person was born female, I promise you they don't have a penis.

Look up "phalloplasty"

SpaceRaccoon · 10/10/2025 19:43

Look up "phalloplasty"

I know very well what a phalloplasty is, having seen some pictures I wish I could unsee. A tube of grafted flesh from a forarm or leg doesn't make a penis, and the complication rate is hideous. I think it's an utterly unethical procedure to carry out.

If it helps one single person and has zero negative effect, what's the issue?

Tampons in male toilets. Please explain how this helps anyone other than accommodating a fetish?

Linenpickle · 10/10/2025 19:44

Bloody stupid. The national trust should pay their staff a real living wage before eating money on tampons for the men’s toilets.

ChampagneLassie · 10/10/2025 19:44

As a NT member I think it’s a bit of a waste of money that could be better spent elsewhere than in some daft virtue signalling

She can laugh all she wants. It is unlawful and she clearly doesn’t care that blokes may well have not appreciated her being there.

We were in the Louvre and lots of teen girls were queuing to use the gents as the ladies had a massive queue and DH wouldn’t use that loo, said he felt like a creep standing with a bunch of teen girls.

A woman there by deceit is in danger.

Are they not putting them in the ladies toilet or something?

Do you object to them being made out of materials that don't use animals products?

Why are you so angry about it?

Where did OP say she was angry?

AppropriateAdult · 10/10/2025 19:51

I’d have no issue with virilised women using the men’s toilets, they’re not presenting a risk to anyone in there. Would have a huge problem with men using the women’s toilets. The two scenarios are not equivalent.

Neither.
People must use the facilities which align with their biological sex.

Oh dear.🙄

Like quite a few others I was pointing out the inconsistency in @LarryIsMyRomanEmpire 's post.

You need to get down off your soapbox

UnderMedicatedMum · 10/10/2025 19:58

They’re covering their own asses but also providing for the mentally unwell women who believe they are men.

AngelicKaty · 10/10/2025 19:58

@oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends YABU. Personally I think it's great that the NT are providing tampons free of charge to all women. If there are some trans men (biological women) who are happy using the gents then why shouldn't they be able to access free tampons too if they need them?

Again - it is unlawful for a space marked as being single sex for men to allow women in. The NT are acting unlawfully.

TipsyPeachSnake · 10/10/2025 20:02

Perhaps making it easier for men to pick up toiletries for their wives / girlfriend, why not?

oh and vegan means no animal products / cruelty free.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 10/10/2025 20:05

Why do you care?

Well exactly (as I said upthread)

I'm astonished at the "who cares" on this thread. Does no-one read the news or take an interest in current affairs any more? Single sex toilets are exactly that. That's why what the NT is doing is wrong. As so many organisations are doing, they're wilfully ignoring the law.

HeyThereDelila · 10/10/2025 20:07

It implies that property is managed by an idiot who is ignoring the For Women Scotland Supreme Court judgement…

Does that scenario make sense to you?

Why wouldn't those women grab them from the women's???

LBFseBrom · 10/10/2025 20:14

I remember reading somewhere that there are men who use them up their backsides because they leak. I'd have thught they'd have carried their own discreet supply.

I can't think of any other reason they would be in a men's toilet.

Are the NT lavatories known for ..... social activities?

Both are unlawful, and men are entitled to their own spaces.

People have misunderstood the supreme court ruling. It is not binding on individuals as the Equality Act 2010 does not apply to individuals. No-one is going to get arrested for being in the wrong toilet. It is binding on service providers and organisations that they must provide single-sex toilets.

THe reality is that a lot of transmen have used, and will continue to use the men's toilet. A lot of transmen pass (at first glance anyway), especially if they have grown a beard, and obviously won't use women's toilets for the effect it will have on women who are using them.

samarrange · 10/10/2025 20:18

I'm no fan of Genderwang™ but I'm not sure that this is the hill I would choose to die on in defence of that position.

Perhaps a woman is concerned because her period is due and she has no tampons with her, and her DP remembers that they had them in the loo when he went earlier, and nips in to get her one. Or just tells her "They had them free in the gents, try the ladies".

Perhaps the ladies is very busy and a woman who really needs the loo "now-now" decided to go into the gents, and is pleased to find the tampons.

It's possible to do the right thing for the wrong reasons, and the thing, rather than the reasons, is what counts most.

Well yes, if father taking kids on day out to NT property and asked to pick up a few bits that day while mum at work. That’s one such scenario, sure there’s possibly many more.
