Neighbour has put up huge Unite the Kingdom flag

UrticaDioca · 05/10/2025 15:05

I am gutted. I haven't seen a single flag in my town, and suddenly this union jack goes up two doors over with the words 'Unite the Kingdom' printed on it in capital letters. The flag is huge and flying from a pole on top of their shed, but it's in their own garden so nothing can be done.

I am the daughter of an immigrant mother and therefore mixed race. Now I have to see this fucking flag waving at me every time I look out of my kitchen or living room windows.

As we used to chant in the playground, when our discourse was more at this level: "I know you are, you said you are, but what am Iiiiii?" 😂😂😂

Indeed, but who started the name calling because you couldn't win the argument...

Leave it there shall we.

Jumpers4goalposts · 10/10/2025 06:31

@Grammarnut its not illegal to be an immigrant or to go to a country to apply for asylum.

I didn't say claiming asylum or to emigrate to a new country was illegal. I said I object to illegal immigrants, especially of no provenance. People crossing the Channel in boats are illegal immigrants, frequently with no ID (sometimes this is intentional, but I am aware that traffickers can also keep their victims' ID). Come the proper way and that's fine by me.

Missed the bit with the name-calling, I'm afraid. I wanted a bit of explanation, because it seemed to me that your argument was, Kirsty can't get a GP appointment because of immigration so will end up in A&E and so on.

However, in a scenario where there do not appear to be any immigrants, your response was a) yes there are (although I'm still not clear whether you were saying 'yes there are' or 'you are lying', and I did want clarification on that) but also, b) there are many reasons people struggle to get GP appointments.

So if there are, as you say, many reasons for this, why zero in on immigration? Why is that the one that merits flag-flying, if there are indeed multiple factors which make life difficult in many places, as I would certainly agree that there are.

There is no other way for them to claim asylum, they need to be in the country to claim it. We need to change our system 100% but that should include a system in France to allow for those that need asylum to claim it. That realistically is the way to “stop the boats”, however we do need to keep in mind the very low numbers of people that enter the UK this way.

I responded to the relevant pp regarding that eons ago.

'So if there are, as you say, many reasons for this, why zero in on immigration?' Because immigration is relevant to the topic of this thread. As previously stated there are an extra 6.93M extra registered patients in the UK since 2015.

33,556 people entered the UK illegally this year so far. That is larger than the population of an average town. To deny the added strain this puts on the NHS is absurd.

'Why is that the one that merits flag-flying, if there are indeed multiple factors which make life difficult in many places, as I would certainly agree that there are..' As previously answered. People are not flying flags solely because they can't get a Dr appointment, there are many reasons why people are anti immigration, this is just one factor in the grand scheme of things.

Unless you are asking why people aren't flying flags to protest GPs working 3 day weeks for example? To which I will answer we can't force doctors to work longer weeks but we can stop people from entering our country illegally and draining tax payers money!

Now, can you actually answer the solutions you have for wealth disparity, that don't look like communism, or is it radio silence again?

So I have. Unsurprisingly, after the bundle on, it gets to difficult to keep up!

But I hope the figures have answered your question regarding one of the reasons why people are not happy about immigration.

Yeah me too! but often they are misinformed or somewhat ignorant tbh. 🙄 nothing really surprises me anymore. Spent time with old uni friends at the weekend and one woman is 'worried for her daughter's safetly with all the immigrants coming over' - I couldn't really believe what I was hearing tbh from a well educated friend. She should be FAR MORE worried about the awful white supremacist thugs already in the UK. I know I am! I'd happily swap the Tommy Robinsons in this country for a nice boat of immigrants.

Edited

It's funny isn't it because I think exactly the same of the other 50%, that often they are misinformed or somewhat ignorant.

Works both ways...

Thanks for the update OP

It IS unreasonable to be dismayed by our own country's flag.

My advice to you would be not to believe everything you read about TR.

Well I went onto his Twitter /X to see if I could better inform myself. His posts contained a great deal of Islamophobia, as well as a lot of hostility and self-aggrandizing. He currently seems to be trying to sow further division between Jewish and Muslim communities. The whole rhetoric really seems to be about division and difference, rather than cultivating understanding, finding commonalities and building bridges between communities. It was not a very nice or inspiring place to hang out.

This.

I’m not someone who has a flag up, I’m pro immigration and think we should be doing more for refugees. But I would very much like to see a more united UK and don’t object to more patriotism (I like the way it’s done in other countries who have a sense of national pride).

Put up your own flag. Take back the symbol of the flag from racists and it loses its power when migrants and liberals are also proudly displaying it.

Agreed.

Exactly OP. Tommy Ten Names is a violent thug and convicted criminal, having served five prison terms. He was also a member of the National Front and the founder of the English Defence League - both deeply racist and nationalistic organisations. How his supporters like @Petitchat can try to claim that anything written about him is inaccurate, when there's a wealth of evidence to show what he is (even by his own hand) shows just how deluded they are.

FinallyHere · 10/10/2025 14:58

there is some small comfort: Labi Siffre has had to issue a cease and desist order to stop the Tommy Robinson campaign from using Siffre’s song ‘something inside so strong’

the irony.

I just feel sorry for you and worried about the future of this country because of the attitudes and false beliefs of people like you. Just makes me feel very sad tbh 💔🤷‍♀️ I'm not misinformed or ignorant btw & it's a lot more than 50% who don't agree with the reform party views and opinions we just aren't all out on the streets (yet) or hanging stupid flags or vandalising roundabouts. I'm volunteering by fostering stray cats and kittens every day for a local charity. What are you doing in your community out of interest?

I think that may be starting to change as the far-right get more emboldened.

There's a show of solidarity this evening, for a mosque near me that was torched last weekend, just a mile or two from the only significant display of "flagging". The organisers think there may be a couple of hundred people attending, which is a lot for a small south coast town.

Why should they? Why can’t they claim asylum where they want/need/have family/speak the language? If you had to leave the UK, where would you go? I know for myself if something happened and myself and my family need to leave the UK and claim asylum somewhere it wouldn’t be the first country I could get to, it would be where I had family or friends or spoke the language or where we could make a life for ourselves.

A Muslim managed to kill 2 Jews in Manchester last week, on Yom Kippur and then pro-Palestinians marched shouting 'to the river to the sea' and 'globalise the intifada' in Manchester streets the same day, as well as on Oct 7th (with pictures of Stars of David being binned and the message that this was a way to clean up the world). I seriously doubt TR is making relations between Muslims and Jews more difficult.

In fact you would have to go where you had a possibility of being accepted, which might not be where you had friends or family these days. Countries do not have to accept immigrants just because they want to come, they have a right to pick and choose who they want. No-one without possession of a UK or RoI passport has any right to come and live in the UK.

Everyone has the right to claim asylum it doesn’t mean they’d get it of course but they can apply.

He is critisising the bien pensants among Jewry. Some (I would not, I am not so arrogant nor anti-semitic) would call them appeasers but I understand trying to get out from under, to avoid confrontation if possible, as Chamberlain did in 1938, buying another year in which to prepare for the war he knew was coming.
However, one might call out such as Starmer and of those who want Israel to stop trying to get rid Hamas and just give in. Had your daughter been found tied to a tree, obviously tortured and her body mutilated I doubt you would want to live next door to Hamas and co. either.
Not that I either like or approve Tommy Robinson who has caused manifold problems, nearly destroyed a rape gang trial and is generally unpleasant. That doesn't mean that occasionally he might be right, sadly.

There could be a number of reasons, not least that they may speak English (and not French) and have family or friends here, but not in France.
Asylum seekers are not required by the 1951 Refugee Convention and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to claim asylum in the first safe country they come to, however, the UNHCR reports that 67% of refugees do actually live in countries neighbouring the one they've been forced to flee, with Turkey and Iran hosting millions of refugees from neighbouring countries.
Why do you think that mainland European countries like France should accept asylum seekers, but not the UK?

We're not talking about all immigrants, but specifically about asylum seekers. Signatory countries to the 1951 Refugee Convention (of which the UK is one of the original signatories) do have to accept asylum claims and for those claims which prove to be valid, do have to give those refugees asylum.
