Neighbour has put up huge Unite the Kingdom flag

I am gutted. I haven't seen a single flag in my town, and suddenly this union jack goes up two doors over with the words 'Unite the Kingdom' printed on it in capital letters. The flag is huge and flying from a pole on top of their shed, but it's in their own garden so nothing can be done.

I am the daughter of an immigrant mother and therefore mixed race. Now I have to see this fucking flag waving at me every time I look out of my kitchen or living room windows.

I’m an immigrant as well in the U.K. and none of this offends me.

The reason people are doing this isn’t about colour or race. It’s about culture.

When I immigrated to the U.K. I learned about its culture. I integrated with it and became part of my community,

How much are the men doing that who are illegally entering the UK ?

Other world leaders have called on the U.K. to take a tougher stance on this issue because of the issues it’s causing along every step of their journey. Maybe you need to educate yourself on that.

You were born to immigrant parents but you aren’t one. Maybe look around and see how well you and your family have integrated into British culture - do you speak English, do you obey the law, do not you respect British customs and traditions? / including free speech which you may not agree with - Yes to all those - then it’s nothing for you to get in a huff over.

I'm sorry but racists don't care how well integrated people are.

I am so confused! I am not from the UK either, I have been here 14 years, I hate all the Brexit shit, racism etc but I don’t see the problem having a flag of the country outside their own house. Why are you offended?! What flag do you expect to see if you live here?

Are you living in a bubble? The far right have taken the flag and use it to intimidate non-whites.
Flags are about context, it depends who is waving them and what the intent is. And erecting a giant Union Jack in this climate is a clear message . Surely you can’t be that naïve.

Sorry but the OP hasn’t even met so I think you are just jumping into conclusions. She just saw a flag and freaked out!

She freaked out because ‘Unite the Kingdom ‘ is rhetoric used by the far right like I said . The likes of Tommy Robinson who is a vile criminal . She doesn’t know but she can assume that he’s sending a clear message and she feels intimidated.

Plumedenom · 08/10/2025 20:18

We can try and sugar coat it, but the bottom line is that the people who have their roots in the UK are sick to the back teeth of more and more immigration, whether it's legal or illegal. You can call it racism, or a phobia or whatever you want. They're sick of it. It's like the residents in Barcelona who are telling tourists to go home. The flags are a protest. To me the flags don't say racism, they are saying ENOUGH multiculturalism because we have lost our English/Scottish/Welsh/Northern Irish identity. People who automatically call that racism are a certain brand of unquestioning left wing liberal that live in glass towers far away from where this is a problem.

If I was her, I would make an attempt to at least meet the people first and if they are indeed far right racists, I would be equally annoyed! But flying a flag out of your house, it is very very common in many other countries. That’s why I would be immediately annoyed

Bluebellsparklypant · 08/10/2025 20:33

Maybe I’m being naive and ignorant, but I thought the whole flag thing was brought about regarding uncontrolled migration (especially by boat) not as a racist statement. Yet time and time again, I see people connecting the dots and immediately assuming the worst
Perhaps I’m wrong?

This 👆

It’s nice to feel proud of where you live instead of feeling like you always have to apologise for it

Bit of a weak argument.... "assume"

TheDenimPoet · 08/10/2025 21:53

Ours have just put a flag up too. With posts on Facebook about how proud they are to fly it. They've shared several "stop the boat" petitions.

I hate the way some people think, it's absolutely vile.

It's fine to be proud to be British, but they're using it for another, darker agenda.

So you think "stop the boat" is absolutely vile, a dark agenda?

What do you mean?
Do you think they shouldn't stop the boats, that the boats should just continue?
Lives are lost in these crossings.

Not a Union Jack that has been defaced with a slogan coined by a criminal, far-right bigoted thug.

There was never any flags where I live until one of the thunder cun7s from reform got in and now they're everywhere. Ironically it's a very much white place and I highly doubt many people here have ever even encountered an immigrant.

I have my roots in the UK 97% British according to my DNA and I’m not sick to the back teeth of immigration. So please don’t include me in your “all” comment. I’m not left wing either.

You should be more worried about the people who own the big boats (the super yachts) who are telling you to be worried about the people in the small boats. The reality of who have very little impact on your life. It’s the people in the big boats that are impacting the cost of living, impacting government policy, impacting governments spending, impacting inflation etc.,

Sometimes repetition is necessary when people find it hard to understand. It’s a bit like Duolingo.

AnaisVB · 09/10/2025 05:27

Petitchat · 08/10/2025 21:36

Yes, this...

I don’t think anyone has said it’s not nice to feel proud of where you are from. I fly the flag (St George) during the football and in those cases I’m proud of my country and team.

The flag ( and The Unite the Kingdom saying) in the case of the violent far right the NF, The BNP and now TR who is a pathological liar, hypocrite and repeat criminal, has been used in a different way

I don’t get why it’s so hard to understand . It’s not the flag, its the circumstance it’s used in and who is using it. The nazis used a flag as they were so proud of being German, I’m sure many people wouldn’t want to see Nazi flags; , even though those Germans were just ‘proud of their country’/

The OP asked what she should do, I can understand that she would feel intimated, to erect a giant flag in this current climate is sending a clear message .

A flag has lots of connotations and being so literal is either really naive or just argumentative.

What’s your record though? All you’ve said it to comment one liners to other peoples quotes. You’ve shared no fact, opinion or anything to contribute to a discussion where someone feels intimated. Instead of slamming her why not try and sympathise. And if you love flying the flag so much and you’re so proud of being British why don’t you start by being kind and offering some wisdom or support like a true Brit?

Do you have any idea on the history of why there are so migrants of ‘different cultures here?

There really is little point talking to someone who just makes sarcastic one liners ‘weak argument’ cant see anything that is constructive or helpful.

I am the daughter of an immigrant mother and therefore mixed race.

Why “therefore”? My husband is the son of an immigrant mother and he’s not mixed race

What? 'Therefore' doesn't mean that her husband HAS to be mixed raced because his mother is an immigrant. It means the same as consequently.

Usernamenotav · 09/10/2025 06:13

UrticaDioca · 05/10/2025 15:25

Yes thanks, I was being an idiot.

Edited

You wasn't though, you can say 'therefore he is mixed raced'. It's just more context to the story. No idea why people are jumping on you for this. It's just another word for 'consequently' so fits fine in your sentence.

i 100% don’t agree with you . But at least you’re being honest .

Its sad that you feel that way, especially as the reason this country has so much multiculturalism is because we asked many of those nationalities to either A come and fight for us or B come and work for us .

Not remotely naive; I just don't swallow the desired narrative the mainstream media wants me to.

Lol! The mainstream media, e.g. the BBC, Sky News, Channel 4 are all biased and can't be trusted but Tommy Robinson, Russell Brand, GB News and the Tate brothers are all speaking the truth!

Define 'people who have their roots in the UK'. Do you mean all people who were born here or do you think that if their parents are immigrants, they don't have their roots in the UK and aren't really British?

My great grandparents came to the UK in the late 19th century fleeing the anti-Jewish pogroms in what is now Poland. Do I have my roots in the UK?

Often the people who make the most fuss about immigration live in areas with hardly any immigrants at all.

I don't hate immigrants. I hate violent and criminal behaviour, irrespective of whether the perpetrators 'have their roots in the UK' or are immigrants to this country. Tommy Robinson is a rabble-rousing violent thug with a criminal record.
