Neighbour has put up huge Unite the Kingdom flag

I am gutted. I haven't seen a single flag in my town, and suddenly this union jack goes up two doors over with the words 'Unite the Kingdom' printed on it in capital letters. The flag is huge and flying from a pole on top of their shed, but it's in their own garden so nothing can be done.

I am the daughter of an immigrant mother and therefore mixed race. Now I have to see this fucking flag waving at me every time I look out of my kitchen or living room windows.

What ahead of those involved in the grooming gangs scandal including the actual child rapists themselves.
Minimising and “white men do it as well post incoming in ….3 2 1

Did you hear about the victim of a child grooming gang who got thrown off stage at the rally because she said her rapists were white men?

Literally booed off stage and abused.

They claim to be there to 'protect women and girls' but we all know their racism trumps everything.

Put me in a room full of immigrants over the people at the rallys, every day of the week.

I know, it was shocking to see so many racists out in force, wasn't it.

That sounds so unrealistic, it's past ridiculous 🤣

Nestingbirds · 05/10/2025 21:04

The poll is bang on 50/50.

I can’t tell you not to be offended op, as you clearly are. Do you know your neighbours? Why not discuss it with them?

We are all entitled to different opinions though ....

Yes, and we are also entitled to hate people who support far-right-wingers. (And yes, they are also entitled to hate me; might make things simpler in fact.)

It is not racist to think that immigration should be controlled, but it would be extremely strange for someone who doesn't have racist sympathies to go on a march organised by a well known racist.

Lots of people went on that march including many who are not racist. Many are at the end of their tether what with the history of our country being trashed as wicked, evil, exploitative etc and that our ancestors never, ever did anything good or worthwhile and have contributed nothing to the world. They are also tired of their way of life being denigrated, their politics causing them to be called racist bigots and gammon, and being told their country has no culture (greatest playwright who ever wrote? greatest poet who ever wrote?), and no customs worthy of respect. So quite a lot of people might follow Tommy Robinson and march for a united kingdom, not a community of communities or a land of strangers (Starmer really should read his speeches before he speaks them). A lot are deeply unhappy that many people (mostly the ones who despise the working classes) support a bunch of terrorists who raped, burned, murdered and took hostages and filmed it all to broadcast, on Oct 7th 23, too.

Odd because I can remember Boris and his Brexit bus and his waving Union flags whilst hanging from a wire and everything being oven ready. Remind me how well that went.

It didn’t go well hence we now have reform most likely to be the next government. I am surprised you haven’t connected the two events.

Nope, no assumption needed I'm afraid. If I put up a symbol in my garden (let's say a gigantic cock and balls) that others find frightening, and refuse to remove it, I am for sure an asshat. I'm prioritising my choice over their comfort. That said, I'm not in this scenario a racist. The people who will be upset, scared, alarmed etc by this are not differentiated by race. However those who feel threatened by the 'UtK' flag are differentiated by race. As a white British person I don't feel threatened, only embarrassed.

Many posters on here are not white British and have said they are not bothered by the Union flag.

rockstarshoes · 05/10/2025 21:11

The good thing about this OP is that you now have the measure of them although I’m sorry you have to look at that every day!

And those people who post with their I’ve never heard of ‘ Unite the Kingdom ‘ are you not ashamed to be so uneducated about what’s happening in your own Country?

Some of the 50-50 may be due to people who are pro-flag but opposed to it's use by Tommy Robinson supporters.

I voted YANBU, but considered voting YABU because it's not the flag as such that is the problem.

I don't think Tommy Robinson is famous for being a racist. I think he's a famous for being an anti-Islam activist. There is a difference. Whether he is or isn't racist is almost moot. His main tub to thump is against the creep of Islam in Britain.

He literally started the EDL. I'm not sure how much more evidence you need that he's racist? 🙄

MaloryJones · 05/10/2025 21:16

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 05/10/2025 15:20

It's a Tommy Robinson slogan. Hence it is racist.

Do grow up ffs

Absolutely. And, in my hypothetical example, not everyone who saw my rampant cock and balls flag would be scared, but those who were, really would be. And of those who would be actually frightened and alarmed by seeing the union flag flapping over their neighbours' houses, none of them are likely to be white British. Hence racist. If your choice only impacts a particular race, and is known to disadvantage and alarm them, then yes it is racist.

The ones whose trials were being compromised by Tommy Robinson? He did his utmost to make those trials unsafe. He's no friend to victims.

Not only does he try to stop victims getting justice, he's good personal friends with paedophiles too.

TooBigForMyBoots · 05/10/2025 21:24

Grammarnut · 05/10/2025 20:51

No, I don't or I would not ask. I think the union is under threat in its 300th and odd year, and more than before. It's not nasty to want to keep it united, the most successful and longest lasting union of countries in the world.

Racists flying flags is dividing the country, not uniting it.

PGmicstand · 05/10/2025 21:30

I'm sick of the sight of flags. A load appeared on our high street. I complained to the council who said that they'd been out to inspect and that none were present. I've sent them photos as they are very much present, and places where they partially obscure road signs.
Three weeks later they're still up and more have now been added.
I found out that it's apparently not council policy to remove them.
It feels very unwelcoming. We have a reasonably diverse community where I live and I can't help feeling that this is the tip of the racist iceberg as today I noticed several zebra crossings have been daubed with paint.
It isn't patriotic. It's ridiculous.

ttcat37 · 05/10/2025 21:42

Put up a rainbow flag/ trans flag and when he has a big old tantrum you can suggest a flag truce.

No, it's Tommy Robinson's campaign.

God I hate him. He’s a nasty piece of work.

tommyhoundmum · 05/10/2025 21:45

Our Deerhound has a union flag on his identity disc. Does that mean he's a racist hound?

I'm his mother and I need to know.

I had this conversation on another thread

Because my memory of the EDL was the T-shirts that said "black and white unite". I was quite confused because that doesn't fit with what people say about EDL. I think this thread was in feminism.

Anyway, I think some people are using the term racist as shorthand for anti radical Islam

Others will say to you that they do feel Tommy Robinson is genuinely racist.

It struck me as being important to know because There will be people here who are too young to remember the EDL and one of my young neighbours was also under the impression that there were skin colour and race issues attached to the EDL.

i'm genuinely surprised how many people don't know about UTK.

I am not sure it is. Depends on the reason you are targetting them? I.e. Hamas is a hate group, targetting them as being a hate group we would prefer not to have to deal with, is not racist.

That some people think flying the Union flag is racist is dividing the country.

Seymour5 · 05/10/2025 22:09

If everyone who flies a union flag, or turns up to a march in support of the UK is racist, is everyone flying a Palestinian flag and joining a pro Palestine demonstration a supporter of Hamas?

Ok, but do you feel that the union flag clearly targets Hamas?
