Neighbour has put up huge Unite the Kingdom flag

UrticaDioca · 05/10/2025 15:05

I am gutted. I haven't seen a single flag in my town, and suddenly this union jack goes up two doors over with the words 'Unite the Kingdom' printed on it in capital letters. The flag is huge and flying from a pole on top of their shed, but it's in their own garden so nothing can be done.

I am the daughter of an immigrant mother and therefore mixed race. Now I have to see this fucking flag waving at me every time I look out of my kitchen or living room windows.

So, whilst people are getting their knickers in a twist over some flags, with their often-fake outrage, Labour are busy seriously fucking up the UK economy, with consequences for all of us.

Some people have got some seriously messed up priorities.

Odd because I can remember Boris and his Brexit bus and his waving Union flags whilst hanging from a wire and everything being oven ready. Remind me how well that went.

We are all entitled to different opinions though ....

I'm sure people said that about the Nazis too.

I don’t understand the connection to this thread.

Please explain.

suburberphobe · 05/10/2025 20:16

Really so you don’t know about the 12 year old girl raped by 3 Romanian immigrants as it doesn’t fit your agenda.

What the fuck are you talking about? Of course that's appalling what happened. I don't live in UK and stuff like that happens here too.
Most immigrants - the ones I know and the masses I don't are law-abiding citizens.

Petitchat · 05/10/2025 20:17

LakieLady · 05/10/2025 20:05

But it's not "just a flag", is it? It's a flag emblazoned with a slogan used by a far-right, racist organisation. And it's a bit sus that it's only appeared recently, when said organisation has recently had 100-150,00 marching through London, spouting their vile shite.

If he was like my friend's dad, who had a Union flag in his front garden for years, then it might be "just a flag", but in the current climate, I don't think it's overreaching to think it's expressing racism.

150,000 people "spouting their vile shite"?

Wow!

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 05/10/2025 20:18

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 05/10/2025 19:31

Look, I cannot analyse the beliefs and motivations of every single person who went on that march, but I can say with confidence that anyone who genuinely cares about opposing racism would not go on a march organised by one of Britain's most famous racists. They just wouldn't.

I don't think Tommy Robinson is famous for being a racist. I think he's a famous for being an anti-Islam activist. There is a difference. Whether he is or isn't racist is almost moot. His main tub to thump is against the creep of Islam in Britain.

IsEveryUserNameBloodyTaken · 05/10/2025 20:18

I shall partake of a nice glass of wine and take one small sip each time I read a mealy mouthed lefty lover writes the word “Racist”.
I suspect by the time the thread has finished, I won’t just be a bit tipsy but off me tips and singing in the street.
Carry on, as you were.

You don’t have to be a lefty to know TR and his supporters are racists. Can’t believe we are even discussing that.

The evidence is the flag. If you display a symbol that makes others feel unsafe, and regard your right to do so as more important than their right to feel safe, that makes you selfish but not a racist. If the group of people who are made to feel unsafe by this symbol can be differentiated by race, then you are selfish AND a racist.

The evidence is not the flag. You are making the assumption that the people putting it up are racist. They may think that immigration should be controlled or that maybe attacking Jews on Yom Kippur is wrong, or possibly that immigrants are extremely welcome but should integrate somewhat and learn the language if they do not yet speak it. None of that is racist.
Unless you speak to people you do not know what they think.
If the Union flag - however presented - makes you feel unsafe then perhaps the problem is yours, not the flag's? It's my flag and possibly yours.
Locally a Palestinian flag is on display, with 'Free Palestine'. It is the flag of a nation run by terrorists who have committed atrocities. I have no problem with it being displayed nor with the views of the people displaying it (though if I were Jewish I might, I suppose).

He's very famous for being racist. He was racist for years before he rebranded his racism as Islamophobia.

His main tub to thump is grifting off UK racists and fools while he takes it up in his villa in Spain. Where he's an immigrant.😱

OK, we can agree to disagree. As far as I'm concerned, there is no question that he is racist. If you don't agree, we will not find any common ground.

Simplestars · 05/10/2025 19:44

Even though people who attend are not racist they know what those Marches represent and are adding weight to it.

So to me you are just as bad but hide behind 'but I'm not a racist'.

Edited

They represent what the individual people on them want them to represent.

What do the people on pro-Palestine marches in London every week represent?

JustSawJohnny · 05/10/2025 20:30

I'd be so pissed off.

My local town is covered with them.

Knocks me sick.

He's right at the front of the scum list for me.

FindingMeno · 05/10/2025 20:36

I can't believe the number of people on here that think they're anything other than knuckledragging racists.
I'm sorry op that you have these people as your neighbours.
I am horrified by the numbers of these people who walk amongst us.

LakieLady · 05/10/2025 20:36

34ransum · 05/10/2025 16:54

Immigrant here.

There are hundreds of flags on my high street and commute.

It makes me feel incredibly sad, angry, frustrated, unwelcome, othered...

I also feel sad for my children, neither of whom are white, both who were born here and have only English passports

I'm so sorry these arseholes have caused you to feel like this. It must be awful.

But I genuinely believe that only a minority of white British people have these views. Where I live, a town of approx 20k people in a mainly rural county, I have seen precisely 3 flags. A few miles away, on the main road that runs along the coast, there's a stretch of around a dozen or two. And that's truly all I've seen.

But it makes me feel sad, too. I thought all this shit was a thing of the past, and associated it with the National Front back in the 1970s. I fucking hated it then and I hate it now, and it feels like we've stepped back 50 years. I'm just pissed off that I'm too old and decrepit to go mixing it with racists and fascists like I did back then.

I object to the flag of my country being co-opted by the right wing to symbolise racist hate. Over time it will be claimed back. I would generally think nothing about someone displaying an England flag during a sports event or a union jack for a coronation etc. Putting up a flag right after Tommy Robinson's march is making a statement, that they want people to understand. It's disgraceful the British and England flags are being used in this way.

Yes, I agree. Not convinced every Union flag flying supports Mr Robinson. I do think people are tired of what feels like open borders and immigrants who do not want to join the ship, as it were. There have been some unpleasant scandals such as grooming gangs which were allowed to continue apparently to prevent accusations of racism.

Nope, no assumption needed I'm afraid. If I put up a symbol in my garden (let's say a gigantic cock and balls) that others find frightening, and refuse to remove it, I am for sure an asshat. I'm prioritising my choice over their comfort. That said, I'm not in this scenario a racist. The people who will be upset, scared, alarmed etc by this are not differentiated by race. However those who feel threatened by the 'UtK' flag are differentiated by race. As a white British person I don't feel threatened, only embarrassed.

In Oldbury we have had a Sikh woman born here raped and beaten by two white racists telling her to go back to her own country.

Omg, that is horrific, @Agrumpyknitter . The poor woman. Wtf is this country turning into?

I take it you didn’t hear about the 3 day ordeal of the 12 year old who was abducted drugged and attacked over that 3 day period then.
Indeed what the fuck is this country turning into .

Fake innocence is really boring. You know as well as I do why it’s nasty.

No, I don't or I would not ask. I think the union is under threat in its 300th and odd year, and more than before. It's not nasty to want to keep it united, the most successful and longest lasting union of countries in the world.

I know what it means. I also take very little notice of the bible. Everyone judges. Especially people who put flags up. The judgiest of the lot.

It would pay us all to take more notice of what the Nazareen said, I think. He taught that one should treat others as one wished to be treated and be welcoming to strangers as well as pointing out that being judgemental usually rebounded on those who made the judgements.
