Neighbour has put up huge Unite the Kingdom flag

I am gutted. I haven't seen a single flag in my town, and suddenly this union jack goes up two doors over with the words 'Unite the Kingdom' printed on it in capital letters. The flag is huge and flying from a pole on top of their shed, but it's in their own garden so nothing can be done.

I am the daughter of an immigrant mother and therefore mixed race. Now I have to see this fucking flag waving at me every time I look out of my kitchen or living room windows.

If everyone who flies a union flag, or turns up to a march in support of the UK is racist, is everyone flying a Palestinian flag and joining a pro Palestine demonstration a supporter of Hamas?

It’s not a march in support of the UK. It’s a march hosted by Tony Robinson and you go to hear him speak. You are either racist or ignorant. I think a lot of it is ignorance personally. Ignorance is dangerous though.

No, neither is, but anyone who knowingly turns up to a march led by TOMMY ROBINSON is racist, and anyone who knowingly turns up to a march led by a representative of HAMAS is a supporter of Hamas.

HRTQueen · 05/10/2025 22:24

I’m sorry op you neighbours are proud racists

of course they would probably say not you it’s those others or similar racist comment

if if makes you feel any better my cousin was out on the March and proudly draped in the flag and she is South Asian and looks it wtf 🤬 her mum my aunty suffered terrible racism when she came here and again recently sadly you can’t argue with stupid and it’s even worse when angry and stupid

I keep seeing this 'flags reduce purchase prices' argument but there is absolutely no statistical evidence to support this. Many towns have flags all over the place.

A simple Google search will enlighten you. Even before this bizarre flag fetish it was well known that areas with St George’s flags were significantly cheaper to buy because flags lowered the value of their homes.

That some people think flying the Union flag is racist is dividing the country.

Those behind Unite the Kingdom and Operation Raise the Colours are racist.

If they were just a bunch of merry patriots trying to cheer the place up, they'd acknowledge their campaign has backfired, got mixed up with racists and take them down.

But they're not a bunch of merry, wellmeaning, patriots and people, left, right and centre know it. Its just the far right who are playing stupid or are in denial.

BusyExpert · 05/10/2025 22:34

That "fucking flag" is the flag of the country that you live in and the home of your ancestors. I suggest you get over yourself
Shameful language

Greenmouldycheese · 05/10/2025 22:50

How awful that flying the country's flag is now being called racist. Our flags are beautiful and we should be proud.

Lots of people went on that march including many who are not racist. Many are at the end of their tether what with the history of our country being trashed as wicked, evil, exploitative etc and that our ancestors never, ever did anything good or worthwhile and have contributed nothing to the world. They are also tired of their way of life being denigrated, their politics causing them to be called racist bigots and gammon, and being told their country has no culture (greatest playwright who ever wrote? greatest poet who ever wrote?), and no customs worthy of respect. So quite a lot of people might follow Tommy Robinson and march for a united kingdom, not a community of communities or a land of strangers (Starmer really should read his speeches before he speaks them). A lot are deeply unhappy that many people (mostly the ones who despise the working classes) support a bunch of terrorists who raped, burned, murdered and took hostages and filmed it all to broadcast, on Oct 7th 23, too.

It's interesting that you should mention the horrific attacks on Israel on October 7th two years ago. I have grave concerns about the Israeli government's actions in Gaza and about our own government's response to those actions. However, I would never go on one of the pro Palestine marches because it is very clear that some of the people on those marches have been using them as a vehicle for the expression of their antisemitic hate. I recognise that aligning myself with those people, and marching alongside them, might suggest that I was condoning the antisemitism, and I am categorically not willing to do that. Because it is wrong.

If people choose to march alongside racists, they are effectively choosing to condone racism. And as far as I'm concerned, that makes them part of the problem.

Prior to this, have you had any engagement with them? Any hint they are racist?

What does a person have to do to 'hint' they are racist?

I'd start with a flag that Tommy Robinson endorses.

FortuneFaded · 06/10/2025 01:08

I’d just ignore it. His views are still his views with or without a flag. You can’t change it being there, but you can choose to be glad he has outed himself as someone whose views are opposite to yours and ignore him as you do now.
Someone in our street has a flagpole, they put up all sorts of flags, including the St George one recently. They also have two Easter Island heads on plinths either side of their drive, and decorate them with different hats. I barely notice now as I think it looks shit and choose to ignore.

CurlewKate · 06/10/2025 04:00

To paraphrase Billy Bragg-if you’re flying your flag for legitimate non racist reasons you don’t have to explain that you’re not a racist.

Sources for these things you mention? Who ever said our ancestors never did anything good or worthwhile, for example?

The flag is not racist. The person flying it usually is.

Please explain why someone flying their own countries flag is probably racist?

Because of the current massive racist flag flying campaign.

This stuff isn’t difficult to understand.

a flag carrying a slogan associated with a racist organization is racist.

PurpleChrayn · 06/10/2025 07:40

I’d rather see that than the Palestinian flags people have in their windows around where I live.

lovernotafighterr · 06/10/2025 07:45

I prefer the Palestinian flag myself. A country being wiped out while the world is watching.

have You met them? Go and chat to them. I think there’s a risk you’re projecting your own interpretation of a flag onto the matter. I am ignorant to what the message behind the act is, but a flag wanting unity doesn’t equate to racism does it?

Because of the current massive racist flag flying campaign.

This stuff isn’t difficult to understand.

It isn’t a racist campaign, it’s a campaign to to remind people to be proud to be British, regardless of colour. I suppose it depends on your understanding of it.

pestowithwalnuts · 06/10/2025 08:02

What's offensive or racist about flying a union jack flag. ??

My understanding is that it is run by Tommy Robinson who is a well-known racist thug.

This very thread alone demonstrates how far from “united” the United Kingdom is!

I believe that is called knowing my own worth.

That's pretty much what someone with Main Character Syndrome/extreme narcissism would say tbh. I'm not complaining, just observing. Noticing, if you like.
