Constipation- nothing works!

Boxingshibes · 22/09/2025 16:28

I've been constipated for 20 days now!
I've been taking senokot for the last 12 days and Movacol twice daily for a week.
I even tried glycerine suppositories over the weekend.
Nothing!
What else can I do?
It's really uncomfortable and I have a pain in my side.
Aibu to this one of these should have worked?

You have left for too long. I usually panic after 4 days without poop. Epsom salts work quick but you need to drink lots if that won't help only enemas I do on my own I have kit at home and always work.

Beepbittyboop · 22/09/2025 19:40

You can't afford to not get it sorted. I went 10 days without a bowel movement after a bad accident and over 20 years ago and still pay the price to this day. Ended up with fissure, recurring abscess and eventually a fistula. If you have any discomfort after the impaction is solved do not ignore it and hope it goes away, get it seen and nip any complications in the bud. I would probably trade a few fingers and toes in exchange for not having the awfulness of butt complications. When you do finally start moving pressing on the perineum can help get past the initial I don't even know how describe it, 'crowning' of the turd?!

Ok well, the red flag signs of an obstruction are —intense abdominal pain
-vomitting
-absolute absence of passing gas or stools
-bloating and swelling in your abdomen
-feeling like crap and no appetite are other warning signs you should look out for along with fast heartbeat and dark pee.

If you feel you probably aren’t obstructed and you aren’t willing to go to out of hours then take 8 movicol and 3 litres of water is what I’d do but I’m not going to give you medical advice. I think you should be seen and call 111.

FurForksSake · 22/09/2025 19:46

@Beepbittyboopits called splinting and I dont think its recommended apart from extreme circumstances.

Elle771 · 22/09/2025 19:51

20 days?!?!?! 😱😱😱 screw work get seen by a Dr asap!!!

Justwrong68 · 22/09/2025 19:54

Get some linseeds, grind them in a coffee grinder or soak overnight and eat in your breakfast cereal. Eat an orange a day. These always work for me consistently.

Sixtimesnow · 22/09/2025 19:55

Gastro dr told me to take 4 Laxido sachets. You can buy them at the pharmacy.

Enigma54 · 22/09/2025 19:57

Wtafdidido · 22/09/2025 19:26

Just take the time off work to see a bloody dr. You will end up seriously ill and your health is so much more important than your work. Everyone gets ill at some point and everyone is entitled to sick days. If you quit or does tomorrow you would be replaced promptly. You are not indispensable. Put yourself first

Excellent advice.

OP, please do something proactive..

Nifty50something · 22/09/2025 20:00

I have fleet enemas I use very occasionally when glycerin suppositories aren't working. But in your case OP you've gone past anything you can do at home, and when you do finally go that massive beast is likely to be very painful. You could easily tear yourself. I think you need to ring 111 and potentially you could be sent to A&E. You can't afford to wait around

A double espresso, a cigarette, and most importantly, go to the Library.

Thays not going to do anything .

Not for impaction.

HRTQueen · 22/09/2025 20:18

Ring 111 this evening and follow their advice

It will not be take some xyz or do xyz it will be to see a medical profession asap

there are times your health absolutely has to take priority over work and this is one of those times

Enigma54 · 22/09/2025 20:43

OP, one question. Before feeling this way, have you been eating and drinking as normal? I can’t even imagine what it would be like do not have a BM in 3 weeks.

Anyway, please seek medical attention pronto.

MrsArcher23 · 22/09/2025 21:00

I don’t understand how you can’t see the urgency of your situation. Why won’t you try and deal with this situation tonight? If you have a medical emergency tomorrow your work will have to manage without you. No one is irreplaceable at work but you are to your loved ones.

She hasn't pooed for 20 days. None of these will clear an impaction.

OP- The last person I knew who had been impacted was in a hospital bed next to me - recovering after having to have her bowel resected. She hadn't pooed for 15 days and had to have an 8 hour operation, a week in icu, and 2 weeks on a surgical ward. She had a colostomy bag. Please go and get it looked at this evening.

Pinkmagic1 · 22/09/2025 21:39

My adult dd had this in the summer. She didn't have a bowel movement for over 2 weeks and severe pain and vomiting. She ended up being given an enema in A&E. No laxatives worked, including those prescribed by the GP.
It can be very serious. Please go to the hospital.

Quandri · 22/09/2025 21:40

Honest to god some of you are giving out really dodgy medical advice.

please @Boxingshibes go to the doctor and be seen. ASAP.

BerryTwister · 22/09/2025 22:34

I know people mean well on these constipation threads, but anyone who says their “constipation” is always cured by an orange, a coffee, 2 apples, some sugar free sweets etc, has not experienced real constipation. It’s like taking a paracetamol for a heart attack.

Strangecat · 22/09/2025 22:39

When my DS was struggling immensely with constipation, I found a youtube video with an expert (can’t recall his name) who was doing massages to help move things and it worked on my son. Worth searching on youtube.

sanityisamyth · 22/09/2025 23:17

A litre of apple juice.

RosePetals86 · 22/09/2025 23:26

Coffee and going for a walk will help x
