Constipation- nothing works!

Boxingshibes · 22/09/2025 16:28

I've been constipated for 20 days now!
I've been taking senokot for the last 12 days and Movacol twice daily for a week.
I even tried glycerine suppositories over the weekend.
Nothing!
What else can I do?
It's really uncomfortable and I have a pain in my side.
Aibu to this one of these should have worked?

You need to drink 8 sachets of movicol per day, as by now you'll be severely impacted. Nothing else will work when it gets to this stage. If no movement after the first day, repeat daily. Good luck!

This! and when it's working, you will need to stay at home. We had the poonami with a child. But after 20 days, I would consider the GP to see if you need tests to rule out anything else. are you still feeling well in yourself?

can you ring 111? or walk in centre? You tried a lot so wouldn't try to mess with all the home remedies people are posting on here.

Eat a whole bag of sugar free sweets.
My friend swears by it.

Yes,also sugar free digestive biscuits 😋

CanSeeClearlyNowTheRainHasGone · 22/09/2025 17:33

20 days is ridiculous
Are you eating anything or on a total fasting diet.

If you're eating - imagine how much has piled up in there - then got to a doctor

If you're not eating - then there's the reason there's nothing coming out. Consider that, then go to a doctor.

Alternatively, if you're absolutely set on alternative remedies because you have some morbid fear of doctors and science, I'd suggest an enema kit. That's the only thing I know that will (eventually) soften your stool to allow it to come out.

Or lastly, take a course in mathematics, then you can work it out with a pencil ;)

Whole 1litre carton of prune juice. Worked for me after surgery last week.

Had you gone 20 days without having a shite?

x2boys · 22/09/2025 17:39

Yes,also sugar free digestive biscuits 😋

Neither of which will help with impaction.

Passing wind a bit. I feel a bit nauseous and don't want to eat.
My worry is that I have pain in my left side and can feel a hard lump but I have a really high pain threshold so probably won't be able to tell if something is wrong till it's really serious.
(Nearly died from sepsis as I didn't think it was too bad before)

You are likely impacted and you need a prescription for something like Linaclotide once they’ve gone through your history.

Please seek medical help asap, ie. NOW.
If access to 111 or gp is not immediate then I would bypass those options and present at A&E which is probably where you will end up anyway, one way or another. This is not a trivial matter and you will not be viewed as a time waster.

I suffer so badly with constipation and have done all my life. I went about 14 days recently and read about salty warm water - I don’t think it’s very good for you and I don’t want you to be poorly but it did help in that it gave me the urge. I have found that I have to sit on the toilet and do little thrusts over and over again for quite a while and then I have to contort my body so that I’m sort of slumped back and it forces the poo out (I’m sorry I know that’s gross but I’m guessing you’re desperate - I cried when I went after 14 days) because it had gotten so hard and compact I needed to sort of squash the poo in order for it to narrow enough to start coming out and slumping down and pushing did that.

You sound like you have a recticil, means you have to lean backwards to evacuate rather than sit hunched forward like most people

Quandri · 22/09/2025 17:45

Seriously stop dicking about and ring the doctor. Now. This is not one of those times to mess around with sweets or coffee and a fag.

You will be seriously impacted and you need to be examined by a medical professional.

MagentaRocks · 22/09/2025 17:45

I use glycerin suppositories, but as they haven’t worked for you I am not sure what else will. I think you need to see a DR. Not doing so because of work is dangerous. You could be extremely unwell if you leave it.

FurForksSake · 22/09/2025 17:46

So movicol probably would have worked if you had taken the max of 8 doses within 6 hours. However, at this point you need medical attention to ensure you can manage the impaction this way. I’d also insist on a follow up with the gp to be referred for investigations for the constipation, sudden changes in bowel habits can be red flags and should be fully discussed.

Ring 111.

soupyspoon · 22/09/2025 17:46

Its not even a GP thing because you wont get an appointment quick enough and theres nothing they can do, you need to go to A+E really

SophieJo · 22/09/2025 17:47

I had one of these in hospital after nearly a week. You can buy them from a chemist and it does work.

Constipation- nothing works!
Bumbelinaaa · 22/09/2025 17:49

paisley256 · 22/09/2025 16:50

I'd be ordering these phosphate enemas from Amazon for short term relief whilst also drinking the Movicol. Incase of impaction I'd try and see gp too. Beem there so many times due to medication I'm on. Hope you get some relief ASAP.

I agree! They were a godsend for me post birth. I have a rectocele and it’s well managed now so I’ve not needed them for years, but I will still keep a few stocked at home just in case

FurForksSake · 22/09/2025 17:49

Glycerin suppositories will soften whatever is in your rectum, leave them in for as long as humanly possible. But it won’t do anything for the impaction higher up.

I am taking lactulose twice a day due to opioids and I’ve had to take quite high doses to get going. I tried glycerine and managed a little and one of the enemas recommended, but neither helped as it wasn’t where the problem is.

please do seek medical attention.

cooroocoocoo · 22/09/2025 17:51

Unfortunately I can't take any time off work so would be unable to go to the Dr's

OP - I think you may have underestimated the consequences of constipation/impaction. I won't go into details but if you google it, I hope you will take action. Your health has to come before work. You must take time off to get medical attention.

I do hope you get treatment very soon.

WonderingWanda · 22/09/2025 17:51

CraftyNavySeal · 22/09/2025 16:47

Can you get a phone consultation?

You won’t be in work at all if you end up needing emergency surgery for a blockage.

This 100%. It's now the point where you need medical help op despite not wanting to take time off work. To be honest if you take enough movcol to get things moving you won't want to be at work when they do.

user1492809438 · 22/09/2025 17:54

2 x Dulcolax, but be warned, it's brutal.

That stuff is rubbish, it was as brutal as being touched with a feather.

DixiePeach · 22/09/2025 18:01

can I suggest that you stop with all the laxatives and seek urgent attention. This could be something serious and taking laxatives could cause a serious problem. You need scanning at hospital so they can check that it’s constipation and not anything more sinister. I hope they can sort it for you.

No it doesn’t!! You haven’t even spelt it right, are you qualified to give medical advice??
OP call 111 or present at A&E.
I’m reporting this thread for the dangerous bullshit being suggested to the OP, suggesting anyone else with an ounce of sense please does the same!

MeridaBrave · 22/09/2025 18:12

Increase movicol.

But at this point need to see doctor.

Oh I'm so glad you haven't needed them since. I swore to myself I'd never be without them now and like you I always keep a few in the cupboard just incase. Nothing else has ever worked for me.
