Fucking flags

I know this has probably been done to death on here and there will be lots of threads about it already but I cant be bothered to trawl through the site for them so here I am.

I’m so irritated by the England flags popping up everywhere. There has been an influx put up in my area over the last week, it seems to be increasing by the day. I don’t hate the flag, but I hate the fact it is being used to send a clear message by racists. People aren’t doing it to be patriotic they are doing it to be hateful towards those that they don’t feel ‘belong’ in their country.

I don’t want to see all of these flags in my area. If people are entitled to put them up then why am I not entitled to go and cut the fuckers down? And don’t get me started on the spray painting of public roundabouts and road signage by people who allegedly love their country so much that they are vandalising it at the expense of public money.

If I see one more person give a ‘big well done to whoever has erected the flags on xyz street’ on Facebook I will explode. Does anyone else feel ragey over it?

Other people discomfort and upset is tedious?

Yet you posted rather than scrolled on. Guess another day with the opportunity to be dismissive.

Full disclosure I work in mental health. And live in a rangers fc/celtic fc area. They are absolutely used to express anti immigration and racism and people who I and colleagues have given therapy to are terrified. Living in their own country. Born in this country. It’s often but not always to express to people to go home or suggesting they are dangerous because of the colour of their skin, or that their asylum seeking isn’t genuine. Absolutely disgusting. Please do not vote for NF. Begging you. My view. Not that of my work.

Blame the government, for years this country has had no functioning immigration control, they come, unchecked, some of course legitimate, others not, but illegal all the same.

Slowly the numbers increase, people start to get jittery, the far right seize on an opportunity, suddenly its not illegal immigrants, but all immigrants, and before you know it legal migrants to this country are feeling uncomfortable.

Its the governments fault that this has happened, or in fact successive governments, failure to control illegal migration is giving the right, and more concerningly the far right a foothold.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 09/09/2025 18:24

pinknailvarnish1 · 09/09/2025 17:41

But if you are seeking asylum, you are meant to be fleeing from a very dangerous country - one that could see you killed if you remain.

I don't think any man worth his salt, would abandon his wife and children in a dangerous country? Leave them without a male protector, and just hope for the best? It could take years to reach the UK, and seek (and be approved for) legal status, and then get a job. Are these men just hoping that in the meantime his wife and kids didn't get slaughtered?

Come on now, stop being so naive. They aren't fleeing danger. They are wanting to be here for the free ride they are given. And they have no interest in integrating with the indigenous people who they despise. They despise YOU - don't you realise that?

Take your horse blinkers off.

People migrate, in general, to seek a better life.
It is true that one family member will try and go first.

Mummylovesmonkeys · 09/09/2025 18:24

I just wish I was younger and fitter - if I was I would invest in a stencil and some spray paint and climb up to each one and spray 'Britain Supports the Refugees' on each and every one.

Mrsknowitall · 09/09/2025 18:24

Oh I love seeing them, I think they’re beautiful. Just curious to know if you was this angry at seeing people flying the Ukraine or Palestinian flags?

Bloozie · 09/09/2025 18:25

AtIusvue · 09/09/2025 18:06

So you do have issues with people coming to this country, to live and work here if they have a large bank balance? Just to be clear.

No, I don't have issues with anyone coming to live and work here, if they pay their taxes in this country. I welcome immigration.

And yet it's appearing on the walls of mosques, and accompanied by 'Go home' graffiti on Chinese takeaways owned by people like your mum.

I hate them too. They remind me of National Front marches in the 70s. And far from making me feel proud, they make me feel angry. Their purpose is not to celebrate what is great about this country, but to intimidate, and to signal racism and xenophobia.

I live in a Green/Lib Dem voting town. Our local shop used to sell more Guardians than all the other papers put together. We have an active refugee support group that has been in existence for at least 15 years. Some fucker in the road opposite mine has put up a Union flag in the last 10-14 days. If they were merely expressing their patriotism, why has it only just appeared?

I drove past it earlier, to see if it would be easy to remove, but it appears to be attached to a metal or carbon fibre pole, and is behind a high hedge. It gives me the rage.

Wow. That’s lot of rage against someone expressing what you take to be a minority opinion. Do you really feel entitled to remove things you don’t like from other people’s front gardens?

Yes.

"Proud of the NHS"
"Proud of diversity"
"Proud to welcome immigrants"
"Proud of the BBC"
"Proud to be tolerant"

On every single one of them.

lifeonmars100 · 09/09/2025 18:26

No flags of any description up around where I live but we have had some stupid vandalism flags painted in the city centre which all look a bit pathetic with wonky lines and running paint

So why not send the wife and children first?

Why do you think men prefer not to send their wives and children to cross the world's busiest shipping lane on an inflatable boat?

No need to rush to answer.

Have a sit down and a little think about it.

Use a pen and paper if you need to, or you can work in groups with your friends.

Why wouldn't a father send his child on a dinghy to cross the English channel with strangers, ahead of himself?

Don't rush. You've got plenty of time to answer.

Just have a good think about it, yeah?

I don't see it being racist tbf.

It's a bit like Beauty is in the Eye of the beholder. You see what you want to see. I see our National flag. I don't see a racist symbol put up by racists just to get me.

CunningLinguist2 · 09/09/2025 18:32

I have nothing against the union jack or English flag - or any flag really.
Being Danish, we fly it on national days, celebrations, everyone’s birthday has cake flags, our xmas tree has flag garlands. It’s festive, joyous and celebratory. And it’s everywhere and always has been.
if flown on flag poles in gardens etc, it’s taken down before sunset, must never touch the ground & is treated w respect. It is not left flaccidly flapping from motorway bridges. We wear it on fucking clappy hats at football games. It’s fun!! Not mean or mean spirited.
What it isn’t is divisive, intimidating and flown as a knee jerk reaction to immigration, POC, painted on piss stained mattresses, roundabouts and bins. It’s not suddenly flown as being “proud to be English” (!)
The majority of the uptick recently has nought to do with pride. It’s shaming everything about British values & human decency.

As a (proud) immigrant to the UK, I’ll no doubt be told to “go home” if I dislike it so much. That seems to be the new license that people think they have: letting the inner “swine hound” out and “say it loke it is”. And yes, freedom of speech probably means you can - but is that who you want to be?

But I don’t dislike the flag or Britain. I live by British values - volunteer, help the homeless, pay my taxes etc etc.

I do dislike intolerance, racism, divisiveness, and flag shagging shit stirring detracting from the beauty of an amazing country with on the whole funny, lovely, kind & wonderful people.. I also dislike xmas pudding, but hey ho - not “properly British then”.

It’s a crying shame & utterly disappointing that the Tommy Robinson/Farage brigade have brought out the inner twat waffle in so many at the moment, really.

FatCyclist · 09/09/2025 18:32

Thank you for starting this thread @xmaspud3 . I too find the flags horrible and I agree with you that the people jumping onto the bandwagon putting up flags and painting them on roundabouts are motivated by racism. I’m sorry that you’ve gotten so much flak for stating the blindingly obvious. After the daily barrage of MN posts in praise of the fucking flags it is such a pleasure to see your posts.

I'm in Scotland. Think I'm safe.

If I were to see a St George's Cross flying here, I'd think some poor bastard had a death wish but didn't have the funds to shout a flight to Dignitas.

They’re doing the same with the saltire in Scotland too

IWorkForAnMP · 09/09/2025 18:33

My neighbour opposite has put up a 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿. I responded with a passive aggressive 🙂 flag.

I work with the Military, I love a well kept flag on a flag pole, village bunting, Jubilee or a Coronation flags perfect! Tatty old nylon flags tied half way up a lamp post not so much!
can you imagine what they are going to look like by Christmas? Battered by 4 months wind & rain - filthy bits of rubbish and you can bet that the people who put them up won’t be out taking them down!

My thoughts exactly! and all those poorly painted daubs are going to look even worse once the frost and the rain have taken their toll
