Fucking flags

xmaspud3 · 09/09/2025 15:01

I know this has probably been done to death on here and there will be lots of threads about it already but I cant be bothered to trawl through the site for them so here I am.

I’m so irritated by the England flags popping up everywhere. There has been an influx put up in my area over the last week, it seems to be increasing by the day. I don’t hate the flag, but I hate the fact it is being used to send a clear message by racists. People aren’t doing it to be patriotic they are doing it to be hateful towards those that they don’t feel ‘belong’ in their country.

I don’t want to see all of these flags in my area. If people are entitled to put them up then why am I not entitled to go and cut the fuckers down? And don’t get me started on the spray painting of public roundabouts and road signage by people who allegedly love their country so much that they are vandalising it at the expense of public money.

If I see one more person give a ‘big well done to whoever has erected the flags on xyz street’ on Facebook I will explode. Does anyone else feel ragey over it?

What a patronising post .

When English kids are put to the side of a classroom with a work sheet, whilst the rest of the class are taught the English language, is it any wonder that standards in that group have fallen.
You've just reinforced our argument.

SukiPook · 09/09/2025 17:45

Lol now you have a tiny hint of a flavour of what it's like in Northern Ireland. Flags everywhere... in my locality (but thankfully not around my actual housing area) it's Union Jacks, Israeli flags, UVF and UDA etc. Go to somewhere else it'll be Irish tricolours and Palestinian flags. Tribalism and territory marking everywhere. Some of the flags used to annoy me but now I don't really care too much, I wish the councils would take them off the lamposts on the main roads though but they don't. If it was elsewhere in the UK I'm sure the ones for the illegal organisations wouldn't get left up but the outrage here if any beloved "flegs" are removed .,... Many of the housing estates here are all full of flags but anywhere people have bought their own homes are generally more flag-free, they actually lower the house prices. I'm with you on the yuck factor of seeing England flags going up knowing it's fuelled by racism and xenophobia. But at home here in N.I. I've reached a calm level of zen about flags, they don't trigger me at all anymore, otherwise I'd spend a lot of time triggered!

I’m with you. Let’s blame immigrants for our problems and not the billionaires. The right wing press have played a blinder. It’s making me depressed.

Blaming billionaires for all the problems is no different to blaming immigrants. Just another scapegoat.

Many billionaires in the UK are immigrants…so are they to blame or not?

The term illegal migrant is silly given there is no legal route to claim asylum in the UK from outside the country. The United Nations General Assembly, International Organization for Migration, Council of Europe, and European Commission have all deemed the phrase 'illegal migration' unacceptable, recommending instead the term 'irregular.'

The Home Office’s former Commander leading the operational response to small boat crossings told parliament that “very close to all” people who arrive on small boats claim asylum. This means they will be documented by the Home Office, and they are required to provide evidence and be interviewed to have their case assessed. Three-quarters are subsequently found to need refugee protection.

New data released by the MIrreM project also recently found that the number of irregular migrants living in the UK and other large European countries has remained stable since 2008.

@PiggyPigalle nothing was hung. It was graffiti on a wall of an immigrant business. Nothing patriotic whatsoever. It was anti immigrant vandalism. The cross wasn’t even correct, but the motivation behind it was pretty clear.

They sort of scares me as a child of immigrants. I was born here and sort of pass as white but I still feel it's aimed at me and my family too 😞

I think it is. But I think they're a minority. Immigrants are very important to Britain and most of us know that. We need to start putting flags alongside them and drowning them out. It's sad they are winning at this flag thing, it's sending a terrible message.

Many of us irritated by far more important matters.

Such as -

The incompetence of this Labour Government.
An economy deteriorating daily.
A growing welfare bill, with nothing to show for it.
Crumbling infrastructure.
Immigration, seeemingly out of control.

I could go on.

So, no - the ‘fucking’ flags do not bother me in the slightest.

@CanadianHobbit I love the Canadian use of flags. We made our first trip to Canada this summer and the use of flags made me so happy. And the fact that my coffee order was a "Canadiano", not an Americano!

It's likely in response to the US's tariffs against us and the US president's comments to make us their 51st state. 🙄
Unless it's Canada Day (July 1) you generally only see our flag on gov't buildings. You might find more back east (as we say here on the west coast) in Ontario, but, generally, we know we're Canadian and we don't need to prove it with daily flag waving/flying. It's a seen as a bit OTT.

(Note the National Post headline, "Hundreds Rally". Hundreds, I tell you! 🤣
Seriously, the US has caused deep offence here. Cross-border travel is down, as it should be. I have kept two Canadian flags on my deck, visible from the street, since Canada Day and flags dot neighbourhoods now.)

Proud to be born in England. Makes me happy seeing them :) why shouldn't they be every here. Other countries have them up 🤷‍♀️

But you’ve gotta understand what OP is saying, surely? There’s nothing wrong with loving your country and flying your flag, but that’s NOT the reason the flags are being put up at the moment. The flag is currently being used to divide people and promote a message of them vs us. That’s what every flag being hoisted up on lampposts and spray painted on streets represents at the moment. Do you really love that?

I honestly think the best thing to do is to leave them to get filthy and dirty then remove them as an eyesore.

People will get tired of them soon enough when they look like old dish rags. Running around removing them just encourages the idiots.

Ridiculous that people are talking about "patriotism" and then making us look like the bloody Yanks. Isn't British culture supposed to be about restraint,

the bloody yanks?

I'm on the left.

I don't hate this country. I love it.

And to be crystal clear, I don't hate anyone.

Unlike the far right, I certainly don't hate immigrants, legal or otherwise, and I don't blame immigrants, legal or otherwise, for my problems.

I can see that the number of people claiming asylum after entering the country via a small boat is a problem, but it is far from THE biggest problem facing the country today. I don't hate them for trying so hard to get here. I don't engage in conversations around deploying the Navy, and I don't use dog whistle 'fighting age men'. I see them as people. No hate here.

I can also see that some of those arriving on boats are illegal economic immigrants with no right to claim asylum, and those people should be deported immediately. I don't hate them. They're an annoyance.

And I don't hate you. I think your posts are immature, but that's about it. No hate.

British citizens of other races and nationalities. White women. It’s not like there are only 2 options. Immigrants make up a tiny, TINY proportion of crime. The whole reason it makes headline news is because it happens so rarely it’s newsworthy. A woman is raped in London alone once an hour. A woman is murdered in the UK every 1.5 days. Just try really, really hard to think critically just for a minute.

That's the most hilarious "lies, damned lies, and statistics" attempt I have ever seen.

Every 1.5 days. Or to put it in real terms, massively less than men, only 156 total in a year last year, and women are in fact astronomically safe from murder in the UK compared to most countries and what the reality of existence would expect.

You also aren't making any real points. Asylum seekers, who are what the conversation tends to be about are a somewhat small number. So crime even if they were 3x more dangerous (just as an exampel) would still technically be a tiny amount of crime. The only relevant bit of information in that example is the 3x more dangerous, not the attempt to hide it.

So if you want to make an argument, you need to show the stats that demonstrate they are in per capita terms no more responsible for crime or less as a group. I am not making an argument either way, just pointing out your current one is flawed.

The flags are being put up as a statement. It all started the same time as the flare ups of trouble regarding the hotels housing asylum seekers. It’s to intimidate.

That’s the point; it’s about the timing of this sudden flush of ‘patriotism’.

YouMightThinkThat · 09/09/2025 15:13

I don't think you've quite grasped the wider picture which kind of makes you look a bit foolish.

We see the wider picture fully and I, for one, won’t be cowed or told I’m racist when I’m not. I’m proud of my country and have had flags and bunting at home for years. I won’t allow the co-opting of the flag by others as that would be giving in to them. And I will never be made to feel ashamed of my country.

Nobody is asking you to feel ashamed of your country. You are now aware of how your flags may be interpreted in the current climate, it is up to you what you do with that information.

rockstarshoes · 09/09/2025 17:55

I work with the Military, I love a well kept flag on a flag pole, village bunting, Jubilee or a Coronation flags perfect! Tatty old nylon flags tied half way up a lamp post not so much!
can you imagine what they are going to look like by Christmas? Battered by 4 months wind & rain - filthy bits of rubbish and you can bet that the people who put them up won’t be out taking them down!

Reasontoreason · 09/09/2025 17:55

They’ve tied flags to every lamppost in my village. My family is one of only three that aren’t white. At first, it bothered me now I honestly couldn’t care less. Someone took one of the flags down and it turned into a huge drama, and apparently they’ve ordered more. They say it’s about being patriotic, but if that were true, they’d put up a proper flagpole at the entrance of the village, not tie them on like rags to lampposts. The reality is, they think they’re achieving something, when really it’s just about blaming others and having someone to look down on to make themselves feel better about how their own lives turned out.

It will all die down after Yaxley-Lennon's event on Saturday, I reckon. He'll have had his little day of glory, perhaps made enough money to get through wintering wherever it is he tends to fuck off to. The flags will be left to slowly rot.
