Feet on the sofa - yes or no?

Ddakji · 07/09/2025 11:26

I’m not talking about shoes here - just feet.

Inspired by another thread, do you think it’s fine to have feet on the sofa or not?

Personally, I always curl up with my feet under me so I was slightly astonished that a number of posters on that thread agreed that feet shouldn’t be on the sofa, so I thought I’d ask here.

Please vote below and add a comment if you want! I can’t edit the poll for some reason so as follows:

YABU = no feet on the sofa
YANBU = feet on the sofa are fine

Again - this is about feet only, not shoes.

I read that thread. I always curl up or lie down on sofa with feet up. Only time I don’t is when we have visitors and squash 3 people on a sofa and there is no space to. Cannot imagine sitting up straight at home!

Verywindyday · 07/09/2025 11:30

My own feet on my sofa…yes.
My feet on someone else’s sofa = no…unless I’ve known them for centuries and we are really close.
Someone else’s feet on my sofa = no…unless as above.

Always have my feet on sofa

alittleprivacy · 07/09/2025 11:31

With shoes off and clean feet/socks. (I developed super stinky feet in puberty, it's passed now, but it does make me more paranoid than most about stinky socks.)

mynameiscalypso · 07/09/2025 11:34

I was surprised too. I wouldn’t do bare feet on a sofa at someone else’s house but I would do socks without thinking about it. At home, anything goes. Even my DM - who is quite Mumsnetty about some hygiene things - is fine with it.

RosesAndHellebores · 07/09/2025 11:36

My feet usually go on a footstool. When small the dc were allowed to scramble bare foot over the scruffy sofa in the family room. NOT in the smart room.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 07/09/2025 11:38

Yes, as long as outdoor shoes are off.

This ^^

I’m feet on the sofa anywhere (not that I go many places). Never even occurred to me that it might be an problem at MIL’s, for example (who I get in very well with) and she’s never said anything.

I remember once going to a very lovely hotel with a huge old fireplace and old sofas in front of it - we kicked off our shoes and curled up in front of the fire straight away!

I wonder if it’s to do with being short? My mum (also a pipsqueak) always curled up as well.

No comments from those voting YABU so far!

I didn't read the thread.

But I'd hate growing up in a home where my parents had such a sideways stick up their arses, that no-one was allowed to relax with their feet up on the sofa.

Mind boggling.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 07/09/2025 11:41

I'm chronically ill....so yes, feet up all the way.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 07/09/2025 11:41

What? There are people who don't allow feet on the sofa? Confused

Wow - you have a smart room?! Like a best front parlour kind of thing? I didn’t know people did that any more!

I can't picture how people sit with that rule. I'm imagining everyone sat bolt upright with their feet on the floor like the Simpsons.

Devilsmommy · 07/09/2025 11:42

I always have my feet up or curled under me. Even sat on dining chairs😅 I just can't sit with feet down. I'm 39 so god knows how long I'll be able to keep it up🤭

Fountofwisdom · 07/09/2025 11:43

Fine at home as long as not wearing shoes. I wouldn’t do it in someone else’s house unless I knew them really well and they were doing the same.

Bonjovispyjamas · 07/09/2025 11:46

I'm most comfortable with one leg curled under me, so I always have at least one foot on the sofa. But never with shoes on.

Pricelessadvice · 07/09/2025 11:47

My mum got a new sofa when we were growing up and we weren’t allowed feet on it.

MaryGreenhill · 07/09/2025 11:48

Of course

What in the name of all that's holy is a "smart room"?

The drawing room. I was trying not to sound too wanky.

rainbowsparkle28 · 07/09/2025 12:02

Absolutely feet on sofa I always have to have them tucked under me / cross-legged, find it so uncomfortable otherwise! Not shoes clearly but don’t have shoes on inside anyway.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 07/09/2025 12:03

I don't mind feet up, but we have dogs and cats on the sofas too, which is something that seems to really traumatise a lot of people on mumsnet. We have washable cotton throws over the whole sofa so it's never been a problem.

smallpinecone · 07/09/2025 12:04

I vacuum and mop every day so my floors are always clean - so it’s no problem if people want to put their feet on the sofa. Everyone in the family does, and I wouldn’t tell a guest not to, I’d want them to be comfortable.

Dweetfidilove · 07/09/2025 12:04

On my sofa and with shoes off, yes.
