Feet on the sofa - yes or no?

Ddakji · 07/09/2025 11:26

I’m not talking about shoes here - just feet.

Inspired by another thread, do you think it’s fine to have feet on the sofa or not?

Personally, I always curl up with my feet under me so I was slightly astonished that a number of posters on that thread agreed that feet shouldn’t be on the sofa, so I thought I’d ask here.

Please vote below and add a comment if you want! I can’t edit the poll for some reason so as follows:

YABU = no feet on the sofa
YANBU = feet on the sofa are fine

Again - this is about feet only, not shoes.

why is "sitting" so uncomfortable to you? That's how I watch a movie or read a book. If I was uncomfortable, I wouldn't do it, but it's just.. sitting down?

It's not formal, it's just how we live?

I sit at my desk too, I mean, it's just sitting? Sorry but I just find the whole thing weird.

Because (as I've explained to you multiple times now), if I was to sit on a sofa without putting my feet up, I would either have to sit without back support (which is necessary due to my scoliosis) or with my feet and ankles dangling in mid-air, which makes my hips hurt (again, scoliosis).

Again, as has already been explained to you by multiple people, desks are different because the chairs are designed so you can have back support and put your feet comfortably on the floor. Sofas are not.

I'm trying to imagine someone sitting for hours bolt-upright on a sofa while they watch TV or a movie, or read a book. That's weird to me. As PP said - are you a Simpsons character? Because nobody I know sits like that in real life.

why the need to always be so nasty and superior?

It's fascinating how posters manage to mock anything and everything on this forum 😂. Yes, people SIT on sofas. Maybe we bought a sofa that was actually comfortable to sit in? Not just from a catalogue, takes ages to find the perfect one.

No, I am not a Simpsons character, I happen to buy something that is usable, where - and I didn't realise it was such a shocking concept, you can sit comfortably.

Now I am trying to imagine why people would buy sofas when they can't even sit in them, and these things are expensive, but apparently I am the weird one 😂

Even my very petite friend manage to sit on sofas like any normal human being. Maybe she should be all precious and decide she can't anymore

The only thing I can think is the that poster is elderly because I do know that a more upright chair can be easier to get up from? My mum definitely changed from being a feet up woman to sitting on a small sofa with feet on the ground (it was a very old sofa so nowhere like as humongous as modern ones).

But that doesn’t mean she had zero experience or understand of not having your feet in the ground!

And yes, having a medical condition that gives me a twisted spine, hips and ribcage is mighty precious.

I must tell my doctor and physio Hmm

Yes, my elderly MIL would sit upright as she had poor mobility - but that was only out of necessity - it definitely wasn't a comfort thing!

I’m surprised anyone on MN sits on a sofa at all, considering the absolute obsession with cleanliness. Obviously one must shower before and after sitting on said sofa, and even then for a brief amount of time. Too much sitting is slovenly anyway, far too busy with exercise for that.

Plastic-covered sofas, of course Wink

Maybe consider that there might be multiple people in the household? My sister is 5’2. BIL is 6’3. Unlikely one soda will suit both of them so there’s compromise.

But also - lots of us like curling up on a big sofa. I mentioned my mum’s small sofa - I still curled up on that!

I always have my feet up or curled under me. Even sat on dining chairs😅 I just can't sit with feet down. I'm 39 so god knows how long I'll be able to keep it up🤭

I’m 58 and still do it, and don’t see thst changing soon. Don’t worry, you have time, lol

the ONLY thing you can think because not everybody lives the way you do, and because many of us SIT on sofa, and our visitors SIT on our sofas - as naturally as they do on chairs? It's that the ONLY thing you can think about? 😂😂

But you are right, I am positively ancient. My kids will absolutely agree with you 😂

And there's also finances at play - many people can't afford to spend huge amounts of money on a sofa, so yes, they do have to "pick one from a catalogue".

We also have a super narrow front door and windows so have to have ones we can fit together ourselves.

GiveDogBone · 07/09/2025 18:51

I always lie down on the sofa. Decades of sitting in an office chair have left me unable to sit for long without getting back pain

then if you buy furniture without trying them on, I am starting to understand the problem, but as I can't personally afford to waste money on expensive furniture that we can't use, I give up.

I stick with being the weird one living a weird life because we sit on a piece of furniture designed to be sat one.😂

Ddakji · 07/09/2025 18:22

Let me help you then. When I’m sitting at my desk I sit on an upright chair at around about 90 degrees back to thighs. Back straight and upright, just about.

On a sofa, which is much softer and less upright, I also am less upright, and often nearly horizontal if I’m watching TV or even reading. Sprawled, you might say. The more relaxed I get the less vertical I am. More so if wine is taken.

Now, that’s me in my own home, not with or as a visitor. But even with a visitor I don’t sit bolt upright on the sofa. It’s not Downtown Abbey. Granny isn’t going to rap me on the knuckles if I slump a bit.

And as I and others have said repeatedly, I’m short. On some very deep sofas my feet don’t touch the ground. And sitting without your feet touching the ground but dangling is quite backachey. So I curl up. Lovely and comfy. Perhaps you are taller.

All of this is so relatable. Short people unite...

Rubyupbeat · 07/09/2025 18:56

We have pouffes that we put our feet up on.

Not sure you’re in any position to accuse others of being unimaginative 🤣.

900 people have voted. You’re in the 3%. So it’s reasonable to say that this is very unusual.

Any just to reiterate - the rest of us do sit. With our feet up.

Yep, sofas were even designed to be sat like that - hence the chaise longue!
