Feet on the sofa - yes or no?

Ddakji · 07/09/2025 11:26

I’m not talking about shoes here - just feet.

Inspired by another thread, do you think it’s fine to have feet on the sofa or not?

Personally, I always curl up with my feet under me so I was slightly astonished that a number of posters on that thread agreed that feet shouldn’t be on the sofa, so I thought I’d ask here.

Please vote below and add a comment if you want! I can’t edit the poll for some reason so as follows:

YABU = no feet on the sofa
YANBU = feet on the sofa are fine

Again - this is about feet only, not shoes.

You have a very strange definition of what's rude, that's for sure 😬

might be strange for you, but that's how everyone I know was raised. I don't see any adult, child or teen putting their feet on someone's sofa.

I don't even see the host putting their own feet on their own sofa when they have guests, people..sit?

I don’t sit on chairs, as in dining room chairs, in the same way as I sit on a sofa - they’re completely different.

Exactly. The proportions are all different.

If I couldn't put my feet up on the sofa, I'd either be weirdly perched on the edge with no support for my back and my scoliosis, or sitting right back with my legs and ankles dangling in mid air Confused

A dining room chair means you can sit upright with your back supported and your feet on the floor.

how do you sit on a stool? Sometimes, for various reasons, it's the only seat available when you visit friends. Is that such an ordeal to spend 2 or 3 hours on one?

I don't get why you need to lay down on a sofa, I never see anyone doing that?

Again, a stool is different to a sofa is different to a chair. Never had to sit in one as a guest, rarely had to sit on one as a host.

Lying down on a sofa - relaxing, watching TV, not feeling well - lots of reasons!

I don't sit on stools because I have scoliosis in my spine and hips and need support. If I was expected to sit on one for 2-3 hours I would sit on the floor and lean on something instead.

I never mentioned lying on a sofa. I sit with my feet up in front of me as it's comfortable and relaxing. Our sofa has a corner where you can sit with your back against the rear of the sofa with your feet straight out ahead.

well, yes, but none of these ever apply when you are a visitor, which was the point 😂

Well, it sounds like you have very formal relationships with people if you can't sit comfortably in each others' homes.

When my friends and family come over, they take their shoes off, curl up, take a blanket if it's cold and relax while we chat. Sometimes they'll be joined by a cat or two, or a dog. It's lovely :)

You don't relax when you have visitors? That's a bit sad.

For those who don’t like it, most recently @BluePearOntheRocks is it to do with cleanliness? A lot of people don’t actively wash their feet, they just let soapy water from the rest of their body run down and over their feet and that’s ‘washed’. But then others are washing properly in a shower every day. Out of those two types, I wouldn’t want one of them to put their feet on my sofa either!

When you are in your home alone, or with your family you live with, do you put your feet on your sofa? When you say it isn’t done, are you talking about in front of guests?

DesperatelySeekingHelp · 07/09/2025 13:08

Anything goes in my house. And yes it is clean despite this.

buffyfaithfredwesley · 07/09/2025 13:09

Fine by me, I want people to be comfortable
my friend brings her slippers, walks in and puts the kettle on and opens the fridge! I want people to feel at home like they can pick up a book and curl up on the sofa, not worry about spilling stuff etc

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/09/2025 13:11

My feet (shoeless) are nearly always up on the sofa! TBH it would never occur to me to forbid it.

thereisajellyfish · 07/09/2025 13:11

My own feet are always on the sofa at home, if I’m at other peoples houses it would only be if I’ve known them a very long time and knew they would be fine with it, I do it a lot when I visit DGP but that’s because I’m there for hours so I need to get comfy.

A formal visitor, no. An informal visitor to close family or friend, especially if staying over night - sure, why not? And you’re saying that if a visitor feels unwell you wouldn’t allow them to lie down on your sofa? That seems a little unkind.

Well firstly I may well sit on a sofa but with my feet up (curled up, rather than lying down).

Secondly I definitely have friends I sit and relax or watch TV with.

If I sit on a sofa without my feet on it it would be less comfortable than just sitting on a dining chair. My thighs would have to be about 4 inches longer to be in any way comfortable without curling up!

Wynter25 · 07/09/2025 13:12

InMyShowgirlEra · 07/09/2025 11:42

I can't picture how people sit with that rule. I'm imagining everyone sat bolt upright with their feet on the floor like the Simpsons.

😂😂

MyHeartyCoralSnail · 07/09/2025 13:14

I’m sure the no feet on the sofa brigade are the wanna be posh people who talk about money a lot, loudly announce what they think etiquette is and insist on their daughters sitting ankles crossed knees together.

bilbodog · 07/09/2025 13:17

All my family are short and its very uncomfortable sitting upright on most sofas when your feet dont touch the floor - pulls on my back! So im always feet up.

SleepLuxury · 07/09/2025 13:18

The phrase ‘curling up’ on the sofa is making me twitchy ;-)

R0ckandHardPlace · 07/09/2025 12:10

I do at home, but wouldn’t dream of doing it on someone else’s sofa, or in a public place.

I sit with my feet under me in the cinema...shush, dont tell anybody!

WhineAndWine1 · 07/09/2025 13:22

At own how shoes off fine, ok at my parents but no where else

BuildingLego · 07/09/2025 13:25

With shoes off, yes of course! That’s how I’m sat right now.

I wouldn’t do it at someone else’s house though, unless I’ve known them forever and we’re really comfortable with each other.

Oh, something touched a nerve? 😂😂

Why reacting so bitterly when someone come from a different culture?
