Feet on the sofa - yes or no?

Ddakji · 07/09/2025 11:26

I’m not talking about shoes here - just feet.

Inspired by another thread, do you think it’s fine to have feet on the sofa or not?

Personally, I always curl up with my feet under me so I was slightly astonished that a number of posters on that thread agreed that feet shouldn’t be on the sofa, so I thought I’d ask here.

Please vote below and add a comment if you want! I can’t edit the poll for some reason so as follows:

YABU = no feet on the sofa
YANBU = feet on the sofa are fine

Again - this is about feet only, not shoes.

I mean, there’s even a saying ‘curl up on the sofa’ perhaps with a good book.
Why the concept is alien to some is mind-boggling!

Laura95167 · 07/09/2025 19:52

It would only be a no if having feet on the sofa prevented someone else having room to sit down.

Otherwise sit comfyly

SuperBlondie28 · 07/09/2025 20:25

We have a real leather sofa, about 30 years old. We put a fleecy blanket on the bum area. Our cat loves to snuggle on it. All her feet go on the sofa 😂

I sit with bare feet or covered feet curled under me sometimes at my end.

DH sits with feet on floor.

Blanket gets washed regularly.

I’m feet on the sofa anywhere (not that I go many places). Never even occurred to me that it might be an problem at MIL’s, for example (who I get in very well with) and she’s never said anything.

I remember once going to a very lovely hotel with a huge old fireplace and old sofas in front of it - we kicked off our shoes and curled up in front of the fire straight away!

I wonder if it’s to do with being short? My mum (also a pipsqueak) always curled up as well.

No comments from those voting YABU so far!

They've fainted!

Miaminmoo · 07/09/2025 21:50

Well I own the sofa so……

TwoBagsOfCompost · 07/09/2025 22:03

Of course feet on sofa - although I do have a washable cotton throw on it that is washed weekly.

I would never do it in someone else's house, but been told in the past to relax and do so. At home, absolutely. I can not sleep on a sofa with my feet on the floor, can I?

So I would wote
YABU - if in someone else's house
YANBU - at home

brunettemic · 07/09/2025 22:08

Yep. Especially as we have reclining sofas.

JoeyJava · 07/09/2025 22:09

As long as shoes are off.

Not sure you’re in any position to accuse others of being unimaginative 🤣.

900 people have voted. You’re in the 3%. So it’s reasonable to say that this is very unusual.

Any just to reiterate - the rest of us do sit. With our feet up.

and it's very rude to do that when you are a guest, so there we are!

childofthe607080s · 07/09/2025 22:14

Guest in a strangers house - rude

guest in family or long close friends house perfectly normal

catlover123456789 · 08/09/2025 00:04

I do this all the time on my sofa, its the only way I can sit comfortably for long periods. The covers are washable so they go in the wash from time to time.

Totally feet on sofa house here. For me and for any guests - I want my friends and family to be relaxed when they visit.

As well as the sofas, I’ve got two chaise snuggle chairs - they’re pretty much impossible to sit on unless you’re comfortable with your feet up!

Anyone in my house sitting primly with feet on the floor makes me feel as though I’m being formally interviewed in my own home.

Natsku · 08/09/2025 05:12

I nearly always sit with my feet up on the sofa, either curled up under me or stretched out across the whole length. Sometimes I put my feet up on the footstool or the coffee table instead.
Right now I'm sat at the dining table, with my feet up on the chair opposite. I just hate sitting with my feet on the floor!

user1492757084 · 08/09/2025 05:27

Yes, clean feet or socks on my own sofa. No shoes. I'd abide other people's rules with other people's sofas. Clean feet or socks of close friends and relatives are welcome on my sofas.

I would never stand or weight bear on any sofa. So with children who stand to walk on sofas and weight bear or jump and play about, I stipulate, "No feet on sofas".
When my children were very small the rule was - no feet on sofas - too because they could not be trusted to not stand on other people's furniture nor to not prance about or jump..

2Rebecca · 08/09/2025 06:06

Feet on sofa only in my own house and if there is enough room for me to have the sofa to myself. Putting your feet on a sofa if someone else is on it is unpleasant and selfish. Very rarely in someone else’s house and then only if not sharing sofa

InterestedDad37 · 08/09/2025 07:11

Feet on the seat
Isn't 'ouch' for the couch
But I wouldn't put my loafer
On the sofa

What in the name of all that's holy is a "smart room"?

We had one as well in our childhood home. Double fronted detached house with a reception room on each side of the front door. We had the nicer furniture on the left hand room (and the Christmas tree went in there too, we had Christmas morning in there) and scruffier in the other, which we used day to day. Nicer sitting room was called "the best room". So we'd say "Have you done all the hoovering?" "I've done the living room, the best room and the morning room, haven't done the dining room yet"

I wouldn't put my feet up on the sofa at someone else's unless I and they were very comfortable with it. We have throws over both our sofas, even more reason not to mind. (The strict parent shouting at the kids for putting their feet on their sofas made me go cold, what a horrible way to grow up)

Thissickbeat · 08/09/2025 07:35

Feet on the sofa. We're a No Shoes house so only clean socks and slipper socks are on the sofa.

Alongthetowpath · 08/09/2025 07:39

I always have my feet up on my own sofa at home.

But it’s quite a liberty on somebody else’s sofa - I would say for some people it’s equivalent to making yourself comfortable under the covers in their bed.

So I’d avoid and keep my feet on the floor unless I was with people I’m very close to - and actually, thinking of myself, I keep my feet firmly on the floor even at my siblings, parents and in-laws houses.

lilkitten · 09/09/2025 10:12

No feet on your own sofa? Just like hanging off the edge? That sounds strange to me. Sounds like something you'd do in a showroom, but what's the point of a sofa if you can't relax on it?

2Rebecca · 09/09/2025 17:32

Why does relaxing involve elevating your legs? I am quite relaxed sitting on a chair or sofa. If I’m sprawling I get back ache. Comfort doesn’t have to mean lollopping about

Given that my mum’s house was the house I grew up in, with my feet on the sofa, it would seem odd to stop doing that simply because I was an adult who’d moved out!
