AIBU to say it isn't unexpected, or a surprise?

Absolute nonsense. Loads and loads of male politicians have been scrutinised.

I didn’t say no male politician ever has been scrutinised. I said a male politician wouldn’t have been so scrutinised.

sauvignonplonk1 · 05/09/2025 12:55

About time too! 🙌🏼

Average Reform response.

Average BBC Guardian response

Cue the gloating. I look forward to Farage resigning due to the house in Clacton registered in his partner's name in order to avoid stamp duty payments.

If you can’t see the different between those two scenarios then I worry for your critical thinking skills.

Doing something that reduces your tax bill within the rules is a world away from ignoring how the rules apply to your circumstances. And if you’re going to tweet about MPs of the opposing party to disgrace them for using the SDLT rules that Labour introduced (which Raynor has done in the past), then you better be sure you’re AT LEAST following the rules yourself, if not going out of your way to pay more than the rules require.

And I don’t often defend Farage…

Shouldnt be an MP either imo. Liars and cheats shouldn’t be in office.

Dunno, thats a requirement isn't it?!

Bluelilacbella · 05/09/2025 12:08

Shame on her for wanting to blame the conveyancing company!

Yes - did she really not understand the difference between the solicitors and taking tax advice? When she has been setting up a trust?

If she didn’t she seems a bit scatty to have an important job like DPM.

WhereAreMyAirpods · 05/09/2025 12:56

Jumped before she was pushed. Position totally unsustainable.

MyrtleLion · 05/09/2025 12:56

All political careers end in failure.

Why would anyone ever want to go into it?

SleeplessInWherever · 05/09/2025 12:56

EasternStandard · 05/09/2025 12:47

Perhaps she shouldn’t have lied to stitch up a conveyancer to try to save her skin.

That has got nothing to do with her family or children.

If I make a mistake, intentional or otherwise, nobody would harass my children about it.

There is absolutely no need for the media to dig up the medical history of a complex needs child, or rake through someone’s divorce.

Spray the house is threatening behaviour, and it’s out of line. She’s been frightened out, and it’s disgusting.

Flora2899 · 05/09/2025 12:56

Also. I live in the next constituency to AR's. There is no way that house was/is worth 650k!

VillaDiodati · 05/09/2025 12:56

PiggyPigalle · 05/09/2025 12:52

I could hardly believe the value of her house in Ashton, it's now all coming to light.

Neither could I and I say that as someone who has lived in the area. A lot more will come out about this in the next few days of that I'm sure.

StarlightRobot · 05/09/2025 12:56

Would I be sympathetic if Rayner was advocating to reduce taxes on property? Probably not. But the irony of this is breathtaking given she has been calling for an increase to property taxes. You could not make this up!

Shewasafaireh · 05/09/2025 12:57

@ilovesooty no! Nigel is a man of the people! Look, he goes to the pub and shouts about the evil EU and boats and everything! He can do no wrong.

Bromptotoo · 05/09/2025 12:57

Her sin it seems was that although she had advice about the consequences of ownership of the Ashton house on stamp duty for Hove it was caveated that it was not expert advice and that such advice should be sought.

It was not and that was a breach of the Ministerial Code.

DPotter · 05/09/2025 12:57

Well I think it's shame.

She was hounded out by a bunch of tory hypocrites and their media flunkies.

I have zero interest in her dc, she should have maintained their privacy and not tried to use them to stay in.

I’m referring to the ‘someone has replied to your post emails’.

But as you asked nicely, I like that they are led by a lot of successful business people, people who understand money. I like that they understand you can’t tax your way to growth. I mostly like that they are not the Conservatives, Labour or the Lib Dem’s. I like that they are absolutely against a net zero policy which is damaging. I like their tougher stance on immigration, and also law and order.

I like how Nigel was in Washington DC 48 hours ago, testifying before Congress that he wants the US to put economic sanctions on the UK (his own constituents) because the UK doesn’t allow free speech. Priceless.

Working class women and northerners spend their lives having to prove they aren’t thick as shit or grifters- Angela did nothing at all to help that narrative. She’s an embarrassment. She rose in the ranks by pushing her working class background and enriched herself in the process while forgetting the actual working class. Good riddance

That’s the problem though. She didn’t have working class credibility or any values to chime with her electorate. She just shouted a lot, name called and now it appears looks v grabby and unintelligent at best.

Come on labour voters/supporters - get behind someone who is worth your support. AR is not that someone. You need a conviction politician - with brains and a background external to simply unionist shouty rhetoric.

I feel like a (very) small amount gets into politics with good intentions but it always end up becoming a self serving game. It’s a pity, really.

Cantgetausername87 · 05/09/2025 12:21

Shocked she actually resigned as thought she'd cling on for everything.
I once was a big fan, but I don't believe she is a voice for WC people. I doubt she's the only one who dodges taxes, all parties are full of corrupt self serving dickheads. The whole place needs cleaning up!

Agreed.

Searching4Alpha · 05/09/2025 12:59

CONGRATULATIONS to the DT.

I have zero interest in her dc, she should have maintained their privacy and not tried to use them to stay in.

She was bullied into disclosing that information by people, and the media, “demanding answers.”

I hope you’re not a mother. Because if the media was taking pictures of the faces of my children, when they’d been asked not to, I’d be doing more than crying about it.

Rayner’s class or the fact that she is a woman has nothing to do with this. She is housing minister and the deputy prime minister and failed to obtain proper tax advice on a complicated stamp duty scenario. That negligence alone should be enough for her to be sacked. It beggars belief given she has been accused of wrongdoing for similar issues in the last. And she was also fast and loose with nominating the right property as her residence for council tax purposes. All this in the context of the government being very very tough on taxation issues amd which ks probably about to increase property taxes. The complexity of the tax system is entirely down to the government.

DH and I recently had to pay a substantial fine to HMRC for late payment of capital gains tax because the rules changed and we should have paid within 30 days of the sale of our second property. We didn’t know and instead believed we should have paid the tax at the end of the financial year. No sympathy from the government about our innocent mistake. I have no sympathy for Rayner.

If you had gotten sympathy from HMRC would you have had sympathy for Angela?
