AIBU to say it isn't unexpected, or a surprise?

What i wonder though (again working in conveyancing) wad she told twice what her SDLT liability was based on the fact shr answered the questions wrongly? And didn't disclose the trust? Or her interest in the other house? If a client answers "i dont own any other home this will be my only house" then ill tell them in writing what the liability is but if thats wrong what they tell me my information in writing will also be wrong!

i have no idea but I expect they simply asked do you own another home. She said truthfully no.

what she didn’t realise was that as trustee of a property for her son that made her the ‘owner’ in the eyes of the law. It was something she should have checked with an expert but didn’t

I think if it were this issue alone it would have blown over. It is everything else on top which all added together made her position untenable.

surreygirly · 05/09/2025 12:50

Good Riddance to bad rubbish - delighted she has ruined her career for tax avoidance/theft
Had to go
Her party is squeezing everyone for tax but she thought she should not join in the party
(I voted Labour myself)

If your political views are so offensive that you get banned from social media, perhaps it’s time for a bit of self-reflection.

Where did you get that from?

AmericanPaint · 05/09/2025 12:50

cumbriaisbest · 05/09/2025 12:43

I won't email. I'm asking politely. Nobody but nobody ever says why.

I’m referring to the ‘someone has replied to your post emails’.

But as you asked nicely, I like that they are led by a lot of successful business people, people who understand money. I like that they understand you can’t tax your way to growth. I mostly like that they are not the Conservatives, Labour or the Lib Dem’s. I like that they are absolutely against a net zero policy which is damaging. I like their tougher stance on immigration, and also law and order.

My DH just ran into the room telling me this ..

I have no idea who she is or what she does, only that she is a a member of parliament

no backlash needed before any one starts typing it

Why are you announcing you don’t know who she is. Are you in the uk? Are you in England. That’s not good.

as for the no backlash - you didn’t need to post what you did.

Lots of vitriol here.
Angela Rayner overcame more than any of you will ever know in your lifetimes.
Nobody knows the true story as the media hate any person who has bettered themselves.
She has been hated for speaking with a regional accent by so called upper classes.
They can’t stand the thought of a working class oik doing well.
She is hated by the working class as they are jealous of her.
It was always going to end badly irrespective of any perceived scandal.

You know nothing about the background of any of the posters here. I overcame at least as much, if not more, than Rayner in my early years. By “overcome” I assume you mean choosing to continue a teenage pregnancy?

I come from a working (or not) class background and I find her “regional” accent appalling; plenty of people from this area can speak properly and clearly - perhaps if she had chosen to pay more attention in school or after then she would too. Her thick Manc act is as authentic as Priti Patel’s glottal stop. She cannot be bothered to learn to speak clearly and correctly, and she can’t be bothered to take expert advice for complicated matters, despite wanting to potentially hold the highest office in the country.

Authenticity 🤣🤣🤣

Well it was authentic. But yes I agree with both posters. It’s not often we have a politician who represents the grifting section of the two homes council house brigade. But it is a portion of Britain that’s for sure.

EasternStandard · 05/09/2025 12:50

CaveMum · 05/09/2025 12:44

The report by Sir Laurie Magnus says she was told to seek specialist tax advice, and in one case was given a recommendation of who to talk to, but that she ignored this.

She’s the architect of her own demise.

There you go then.

If I’ve learned anything, it’s never explain what I like about Reform on Mumsnet, unless I want about 6 million email notifications. So that’s it from me. I won’t be responding to questions.

Average Reform response.

cryinglaughing · 05/09/2025 12:50

Odious woman.
Hopefully we will never have to hear or see her again 🤞🏻

tramtracks · 05/09/2025 12:50

PiggyPigalle · 05/09/2025 12:46

It's a two way street.
I had this argument with an engineer who hated salespeople. He said without production, we'd have nothing to sell. I countered that by saying if we didn't bring you customers, you'd be out of a job. Works both ways.

The vast majority of sales are in professional and financial services. Manufacturing sales are way way too low/. Hence why our economy is wholly reliant on the city - unfortunately.

StarlightRobot · 05/09/2025 12:51

Rayner’s class or the fact that she is a woman has nothing to do with this. She is housing minister and the deputy prime minister and failed to obtain proper tax advice on a complicated stamp duty scenario. That negligence alone should be enough for her to be sacked. It beggars belief given she has been accused of wrongdoing for similar issues in the last. And she was also fast and loose with nominating the right property as her residence for council tax purposes. All this in the context of the government being very very tough on taxation issues amd which ks probably about to increase property taxes. The complexity of the tax system is entirely down to the government.

DH and I recently had to pay a substantial fine to HMRC for late payment of capital gains tax because the rules changed and we should have paid within 30 days of the sale of our second property. We didn’t know and instead believed we should have paid the tax at the end of the financial year. No sympathy from the government about our innocent mistake. I have no sympathy for Rayner.

ajandjjmum · 05/09/2025 12:52

PiggyPigalle · 05/09/2025 12:42

She's worth around 5 million pounds. She could buy the flat outright, if she can lay her hands on any of it. One can only wonder why she didn't.

Where has she got that money from?

PiggyPigalle · 05/09/2025 12:52

ajandjjmum · 05/09/2025 12:11

One of the worst things is that she inflated the price of her share of the house she 'sold' to her son's trust, so that she got more of his money. In what world is that acceptable behaviour.

I could hardly believe the value of her house in Ashton, it's now all coming to light.

Skipthisbit · 05/09/2025 12:53

BallerinaRadio · 05/09/2025 12:12

Well now that's over let's see the media go after Farage with the same venom. Let's see wall to wall coverage of his last property scam.

What the Labour Party supporter seem to (wilfully) not understand is that it’s the holier than thou attitude that rankles.
Boris Johnson gets a donor to pay for wallpaper and its uproar from Labour regarding alleged impropriety of it. Labour MPs accept thousands of pounds of gift - clothes, holidays, places to stay, tickets etc and that’s apparently entirely different.

Conservative MP is investigated for genuinely complex tax legislation and is found to be in breach and pays up and he’s the devil with Rayner herself howling for blood. She does it and it’s a million excuses because it’s ALWAYS somehow different if it’s a Labour MP. And the “right wing press” are always out to get them. Whilst the bbc continues with the most appalling biased reporting going all but implying that the ethic advisor is somehow out to get her. It’s shameful. Anyone know how you complain to the bbc?

Good! She lied and lied about what she did. The most disgraceful thing is she tried to bring others down with her.

This ^

A shame she she lied and has dropped her own salary by half and will likely be out at next GE. Blaming everyone else won’t help.

Superhansrantowindsor · 05/09/2025 12:54

I’m glad she’s gone.
People should hold jobs on merit - just because she’s from a humble background doesn’t mean she shouldn’t be expected to follow the highest of standards.

tramtracks · 05/09/2025 12:54

Shewasafaireh · 05/09/2025 12:39

I have a soft spot for her given her background and that she’s actually had to work to get where she was (and a male politician would not have been so scrutinised), but there was no other possible outcome, really.

Absolute nonsense. Loads and loads of male politicians have been scrutinised.

Bromptotoo · 05/09/2025 12:54

PropertyD · 05/09/2025 12:07

That small conveyancing company came out fighting. I hope they become more and more successful due to the way they handled this.

Shame on Rayner for bringing her disabled son into all of this whilst using his trust to pay to live with her latest boyfriend.

She sold her interest in the family home to the trust. Effect of that is to secure the place as a home for him. She can't just do it off her own bat; her ex husband and some type of court order would surely be needed?

Vitriol because she is a thief and a hypocrite.
I am working class.
I have bettered myself
I do not steal from taxpayers which is which she has done
I did not ever think that being working class gave me a free pass to avoid paying tax
