AIBU to say it isn't unexpected, or a surprise?

All very clear from this:
"This week Rayner's allies have suggested that she received advice from various quarters in advance of purchasing the property in Hove. It was left unclear whether that was expert tax advice.
It's now clear that it was left unclear because she never sought expert tax advice.
Magnus says that such advice as she had received was "qualified by the acknowledgement that it did not constitute expert tax advice and was accompanied by a suggestion, or in one case a recommendation, that specific tax advice be obtained".
Rayner did not take that advice, something Magnus says was "highly unfortunate... particularly given her status and responsibilities" as the housing secretary and deputy prime minister."

sciaticafanatica · 05/09/2025 12:44

@DemelzaandRossAR does not get to rip-off her own disabled child and the tax payer because she had a shit youth!
sge could have had it all but ultimately greed and a blatant disregard for everyone but herself was her downfall.
she can cry me a river!

SleeplessInWherever · 05/09/2025 12:44

I feel sorry for her.

I can well believe and understand why she’d have set up that trust and nesting arrangement to benefit her disabled child. Personally I think it was an error, that she intended to rectify.

She shouldn’t have felt the need to betray his privacy by telling everyone those circumstances. Her children and her divorce are her business, they’re not public matter, and it’s disgusting she even had to tell us all the details.

Spray painting the property, and the media taking pictures of her kids; is bang out of order, whatever she’s done and whatever you believe her intentions were. It’s harassment, and it’s vile.

She said over and above anything else, she’s a mother first. Surely that resonates here. The way her family, and the privacy of her disabled teenager, has been handled and treated is nothing short of disgusting.

This country sometimes needs to have a stern word with itself.

CaveMum · 05/09/2025 12:44

The report by Sir Laurie Magnus says she was told to seek specialist tax advice, and in one case was given a recommendation of who to talk to, but that she ignored this.

She’s the architect of her own demise.

That small conveyancing company came out fighting. I hope they become more and more successful due to the way they handled this.

Shame on Rayner for bringing her disabled son into all of this whilst using his trust to pay to live with her latest boyfriend.

DH was at cricket with mates yesterday and one of them knows the conveyancers well, personally and professionally, and his observations (as a left leaning Yorskshireman) was that there is no way they got their advice wrong… unless they were lied to in which case they can only advise on the basis of the ‘facts’ they are presented with.

Am glad she has gone, too. She’ll still have a job as deputy leader of the LP, she just won’t have a role in government, so it’s not like she’s been given her P45 and needs to worry about keeping all those roofs over her head, is it?

Anjo2011 · 05/09/2025 12:45

Good riddance. Labour delivers some good news for a change.

TheWonderhorse · 05/09/2025 12:43

Um, do all of you actually pay attention to what is being reported. The report he was indeed advised twice that what she did was correct, although because one of the advisors suggested she consult a trust specialist and she didn't, that's the problem. She was not found to have lied at all, she made a mistake and she's owned it. Fine.

Farage is the doing opposite, it's legal but morally it's still scummy as fuck.

What i wonder though (again working in conveyancing) wad she told twice what her SDLT liability was based on the fact shr answered the questions wrongly? And didn't disclose the trust? Or her interest in the other house? If a client answers "i dont own any other home this will be my only house" then ill tell them in writing what the liability is but if thats wrong what they tell me my information in writing will also be wrong!

ChocolatesAndRainbows · 05/09/2025 12:46

Good riddance. What a hypocrite .

KioraKiora · 05/09/2025 12:46

We can only hope 'ol two tier flip flop will resign next!

I must admit, I feel quite saddened by Angela Rayner’s resignation.

While she wasn’t without her flaws, she brought a rare combination of authenticity, working-class credibility, and conviction to frontline politics — qualities that are increasingly scarce.

Her departure raises genuine concerns about the future direction of the party. Without her voice, there’s a real risk that Labour may drift further toward the centre-right.

The sustained campaign from sections of the right-wing press to discredit her has clearly taken its toll. It’s a sobering and disturbing reminder of the influence the media can wield in shaping narratives.

That's as maybe. She is a grifter who FAFO'd. Two wrongs don't make a right.

Unfortunately - I don’t think the working classes keep the country going. Financially it’s the city of London. I don’t like it - but it is what it is now.

It's a two way street.
I had this argument with an engineer who hated salespeople. He said without production, we'd have nothing to sell. I countered that by saying if we didn't bring you customers, you'd be out of a job. Works both ways.

safetyfreak · 05/09/2025 12:46

All for 40k saving? how sad, and how bloody stupid!

CagneyNYPD1 · 05/09/2025 12:47

Due diligence. That’s what it comes down to. She had a complicated financial situation because of the family home, the trust and her children’s living arrangements. As the Deputy Prime Minister and Housing Minister, she had already faced questions into her financial arrangements.

AR has shown that she did not undertake the necessary steps in seeking advice considering her position and her financial situation. It would have been reasonable to assume that she would go above and beyond on tax and legal advice. Lack of due diligence will get you every time.

I, for one, am sad to see her go.

Shouldnt be an MP either imo. Liars and cheats shouldn’t be in office.

That would be all of them then.

Has the report been published? Would love to read a link.

cumbriaisbest · 05/09/2025 12:47

Surely as an intelligent professional she would have had access to help we can only dream of?

I don't get it.

SpottyAardvark · 05/09/2025 12:47

I notice Rayner is still trying to use her disabled child as a shield to hide her own greed, lies & corruption.

Corrupt Labour politicians are worse than corrupt Tories because the latter do attempt to hide their venality behind fake piety.

tramtracks · 05/09/2025 12:47

ajandjjmum · 05/09/2025 12:11

One of the worst things is that she inflated the price of her share of the house she 'sold' to her son's trust, so that she got more of his money. In what world is that acceptable behaviour.

If that actually was an inflated value - she’s politically gone. At the moment it looks dubious. I suspect more will be uncovered on this within the next few days.

Whammyyammy · 05/09/2025 12:47

DemelzaandRoss · 05/09/2025 12:36

Lots of vitriol here.
Angela Rayner overcame more than any of you will ever know in your lifetimes.
Nobody knows the true story as the media hate any person who has bettered themselves.
She has been hated for speaking with a regional accent by so called upper classes.
They can’t stand the thought of a working class oik doing well.
She is hated by the working class as they are jealous of her.
It was always going to end badly irrespective of any perceived scandal.

Angela, is this you?

She was completely open about it according to the reports, but the law is that complicated that it takes a specialist and she didn't consult one.

Its right she has resigned, as you say she didn't take expert advice, she believed wished owed the lower rate.... just not good enough.

HMRC will do doubt issue a penalty and interest too, again correct.

However, where we differ is i prefer to await the inquiry, before condemning, thats the right way to behave.

Everyone should have that right.

Artvanderrlay · 05/09/2025 12:36

I feel conflicted, she is an excellent example to many: she was pregnant and left school at 16 without any qualifications, and many in a similar situation would have just given up, instead she went on to become a MP and then deputy PM.

Its a shame its ended this way for her. I don't think she was seeking to avoid paying tax, instead she probably told her she wouldn't need to pay the additional tax because her name was no longer on the deed to her former home. She probably told her solicitors that she didn't need to pay the additional fee.

I don't understand the bile that is being poured out on her. She hasn't abused anyone.

She has abused every single person who has ever worked and paid tax, both by her previous property juggling (not living with her husband so they could both hold on to their discounted council house purchases long enough to not pay back the discount), by transferring her marital property in to a trust (conveniently just as it hit the IHT threshold, not even going in to whether it was overvalued), by potentially misusing the compensation held in trust for her child, and by deliberately choosing to not follow advice which would have meant a much higher stamp duty bill.
