AIBU to say it isn't unexpected, or a surprise?

Women takes advantage of disabled child to gain money, so she can buy a flat with new boyfriend 100’s of miles away.
just in case she didn’t look greedy enough, she then decided to not pay tax on the property!!
she’s an absolute disgrace!!

ajandjjmum · 05/09/2025 12:11

One of the worst things is that she inflated the price of her share of the house she 'sold' to her son's trust, so that she got more of his money. In what world is that acceptable behaviour.

If this is really what she has done it it truly despicable.

AmericanPaint · 05/09/2025 12:36

I’m not left 😂

I vote Reform.

What do you like about them?

bestcatlife · 05/09/2025 12:32

Is this a good thing? She wanted more social housing built, and we desperately need it

That's a Labour policy, not an Rayner policy.

It always makes me laugh when someone does well and they say "oh theycame from a working class family". As if it means working class people have no education and live in slums.
But I'm glad she has gone, I get the impression she was very hard faced. I bet it wasn't fun working for her, and yes hope Starmer goes next.

Read her life story. Nothing funny about it.

tramtracks · 05/09/2025 12:38

DemelzaandRoss · 05/09/2025 12:36

Lots of vitriol here.
Angela Rayner overcame more than any of you will ever know in your lifetimes.
Nobody knows the true story as the media hate any person who has bettered themselves.
She has been hated for speaking with a regional accent by so called upper classes.
They can’t stand the thought of a working class oik doing well.
She is hated by the working class as they are jealous of her.
It was always going to end badly irrespective of any perceived scandal.

Absolute nonsense. There have been loads of fantastic working class politicians. She just isn’t one of them.

Shewasafaireh · 05/09/2025 12:39

I have a soft spot for her given her background and that she’s actually had to work to get where she was (and a male politician would not have been so scrutinised), but there was no other possible outcome, really.

She also doesnt come across as whip smart. The job was too big for her

yes

If I’ve learned anything, it’s never explain what I like about Reform on Mumsnet, unless I want about 6 million email notifications. So that’s it from me. I won’t be responding to questions.

Flora2899 · 05/09/2025 12:40

Her property lawyer will have asked her if she owns any other property for purpose of stamp duty and also indicated that the liability is with the individual. I work in conveyancing we have people argue all the time that they dont need to pay xyz- we dont get involved we input the information they give us to a calculator and tell them what it tells us. If someone disagrees we direct them to HMRC or specialit tax advice. We also state that if they overpay they will get reimbursed and under paid may be subject to additional charges and fees.
When she did her "fact find" it would say do you own any other properties. Will this property replace your main residency" if she didn't understand the implications of the trust thats on her...

The biggest issue here though is that she was loudest to cry about sleeze in previous government's so she can't now not hold herself to the same standards can she?!

If your political views are so offensive that you get banned from social media, perhaps it’s time for a bit of self-reflection.

I thought the same about the working class, ainsleysasnob; they're the people who built and still keep this country going, and most of what Rayner's done is simply to take from it

She's an authentic grifter though, I'll give her that, but perhaps for now the resignation suggests she didn't have anything credible to tell the ethics guy

Unfortunately - I don’t think the working classes keep the country going. Financially it’s the city of London. I don’t like it - but it is what it is now.

PiggyPigalle · 05/09/2025 12:42

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 05/09/2025 12:27

And let’s hope she can afford the mortgage on a backbencher’s salary.

She's worth around 5 million pounds. She could buy the flat outright, if she can lay her hands on any of it. One can only wonder why she didn't.

TizerorFizz · 05/09/2025 12:42

@Deepbluesea1Actually the vast majority of MPs are staying within the tightened up guidelines. It’s too easy, and frankly rather ridiculous to say they are all on the fiddle. The newspapers do a good job of pursuing fiddling as The Telegraph did regarding the expenses scandal and AR. All parties have had their issues and Labour, and very much Rayner, were very clear about being honest and decent in public life. She needs to live by the standards she espouses.

Jealous of her?!

What are they jealous of exactly?

PropertyD · 05/09/2025 12:42

I fully agree that some SD rules are complex. Having said that the page referring to SD and Trusts where the child is under 18 within HMRC is pretty clear (even for me!).

The things I am most concerned with are

  1. She lied about getting legal advice about what SD should be paid and tried to bring others down
  2. She claimed she was thinking of her children in all of this whilst moving 100's of miles away from them
  3. She used her son's Trust Fund to pay her the share of the family home she owned. Why? She was never going to remove him...
  4. She mouths off all the time about others and then does the same thing herself.

I won't email. I'm asking politely. Nobody but nobody ever says why.

mrsoftl · 05/09/2025 12:43

This is a real shame - she's extremely sharp and will be a big loss to government.

backandforthup · 05/09/2025 12:43

Just don’t understand how she could be so stupid

I was meaning your view that people dislike her because she is working class or female etc. I have no reason to disbelieve her background.

MoFadaCromulent · 05/09/2025 12:43

Blimey, she's gone! I didn't expect that! Resigned! You don't see THAT much anymore! Old school! Respect! I rather liked the gal! She was hounded out by the fucking press!

TheWonderhorse · 05/09/2025 12:43

Um, do all of you actually pay attention to what is being reported. The report he was indeed advised twice that what she did was correct, although because one of the advisors suggested she consult a trust specialist and she didn't, that's the problem. She was not found to have lied at all, she made a mistake and she's owned it. Fine.

Farage is the doing opposite, it's legal but morally it's still scummy as fuck.
