AIBU to say it isn't unexpected, or a surprise?

What an insult to the working class.

authentic? She is anything but authentic, you think the way she used her son’s disability was ‘authentic’?

The press haven't discredited her, she’s done it herself.

I thought the same about the working class, ainsleysasnob; they're the people who built and still keep this country going, and most of what Rayner's done is simply to take from it

She's an authentic grifter though, I'll give her that, but perhaps for now the resignation suggests she didn't have anything credible to tell the ethics guy

Bruisername · 05/09/2025 12:30

She has constantly gone after tax avoiders who follow the letter but not spirit of the law

first minister I heard defend her said she had followed the letter of the law 🙄

and then turns out she hadn’t.

so she tried to avoid tax and messed it up…

lily219 · 05/09/2025 12:30

I'm very disappointed. I thought she was more honest than that. She should have known better and been far more careful in getting advice when she bought the flat, given who she is and knowing that she'd be under scrutiny. It just looks like plain stupidity to be that careless. I'm glad she's resigned but in a way, I wish Starmer had sacked her. Now it looks like he was trying to avoid doing so, even if she had broken the ministerial code

tramtracks · 05/09/2025 12:31

User14March · 05/09/2025 12:08

Is that really, exactly what she did?

Yes. Unfortunately - for some reason she didn’t think about the trustee situation and how bad it might look to have a potentially dubious valuation of the property - partially sold back to the trust. So she could buy another property 200 miles away - with an on off boyfriend. None of that sounds like being in the best interests of the 17 year old. She mentioned all of this. Lifted the confidentially order she had previously put in place.

This sorry story has a lot more to it.

GoldThumb · 05/09/2025 12:28

Excellent - am also surprised she jumped before she was pushed.

Can’t stand hypocrites, especially those who so gleefully come for others scalps.

Spare me the female MPs are hounded rhetoric.

She was the biggest hound when it came to pointing out wrongdoings and demanding resignations of others.

Love to see Karma in action.

Edited

Exactly she was dogged in attack. Karma

bestcatlife · 05/09/2025 12:32

Is this a good thing? She wanted more social housing built, and we desperately need it

Deepbluesea1 · 05/09/2025 12:32

olderandnonthewiser · 05/09/2025 12:08

Shouldnt be an MP either imo. Liars and cheats shouldn’t be in office.

on that count, you would have to remove a large subsection of the parliament.

PropertyD · 05/09/2025 12:32

What almost definitely happened is she didnt tell a small conveyancer's firm about her trust. Whether she was too thick to recognise that was key bearing in mind who she was and the position she held is another matter.

Or maybe she just left out the information and hoped no one would find out.

As others say I did think she might cling on but now Starmer doesnt have to sack her so I suspect he can breath a sigh of relief but this isnt looking good for Labour.

I love to see women in traditionally male roles and of course someone with her background did well to get where she did BUT she clearly got grabby, rules are for the little people and her personal life is a mess which has ended up like her political career. She also doesnt come across as whip smart. The job was too big for her.

AmericanPaint · 05/09/2025 12:32

I don’t think she’s done anything wrong.
I’m a capitalist and all for avoiding as much tax as possible, legally.

However, the backlash is due to her hypocrisy.

She shouldn’t have resigned because of her tax dealings. She should have resigned because that’s what she expected of others who had done similar. She set the standard.

I don’t mind people who are all for making money and allow the public to make money through policy that supports enterprise and business and work. But I loathe champagne socialists who pull the ladder up after them, so they can benefit, but we all have to pull together and struggle for the greater good.

Whammyyammy · 05/09/2025 12:33

Hopefully following by KS & RR

Not plain stupidity. She had enough about her to attempt to have all of this under a court order of confidentiality. She took legal advice for that bit…

It wasn’t legal hence owing £40k

Rednorth · 05/09/2025 12:34

Rayner is a hypocrite. I've never liked her and saw through her 'working class' persona years ago.

BUT the timing of this stinks yet again. She was down to take a run at Starmer and now that's been well and truly quashed....I'm all for exposing self serving MPs but not when it's done to protect the positions of other self serving ***.

Let he within out sin and all that...

Ablondiebutagoody · 05/09/2025 12:34

cardibach · 05/09/2025 12:26

He’s not a ‘personality’. He’s an MP. Is it too much to expect him to pay up the tax on earnings he shouldn’t, in m6 opinion, be allowed to have anyway? Plus he did say he had bought a house in his constituency, so it being owned by his partner to avoid tax is somewhat misleading at best, dont you think?

His arrangements are either legal or they are not. If people think that the law needs to change then fine but as things stand, he's done nothing wrong here.

Oh dear, how sad, nevermind.

Artvanderrlay · 05/09/2025 12:36

I feel conflicted, she is an excellent example to many: she was pregnant and left school at 16 without any qualifications, and many in a similar situation would have just given up, instead she went on to become a MP and then deputy PM.

Its a shame its ended this way for her. I don't think she was seeking to avoid paying tax, instead she probably told her she wouldn't need to pay the additional tax because her name was no longer on the deed to her former home. She probably told her solicitors that she didn't need to pay the additional fee.

I don't understand the bile that is being poured out on her. She hasn't abused anyone.

nomas · 05/09/2025 12:36

WitchesofPainswick · 05/09/2025 12:26

She broke the rules because the rules are massively complicated: I wouldn't have thought her Hove flat was a second home when she had no rights to the house she left in a divorce. It's hardly a loophole: it's a detailed technicality.

She does have some rights. She is a trustee of the trust for her son in which the home is placed. As part of the trust, she made a "nesting" arrangement, meaning the children could remain in the family home while the parents alternated living there.

If she was that committed to social housing being available she'd never have bought her own, but as so often self interest hypocrisy ruled

MinnieBaldock · 05/09/2025 12:36

It always makes me laugh when someone does well and they say "oh theycame from a working class family". As if it means working class people have no education and live in slums.
But I'm glad she has gone, I get the impression she was very hard faced. I bet it wasn't fun working for her, and yes hope Starmer goes next.

DemelzaandRoss · 05/09/2025 12:36

Lots of vitriol here.
Angela Rayner overcame more than any of you will ever know in your lifetimes.
Nobody knows the true story as the media hate any person who has bettered themselves.
She has been hated for speaking with a regional accent by so called upper classes.
They can’t stand the thought of a working class oik doing well.
She is hated by the working class as they are jealous of her.
It was always going to end badly irrespective of any perceived scandal.

She didn’t resign simply because of the tax mistake….

Of course this is totally ok 🙄

In the sense that its legal, yes, it is ok. Plenty of people offer their services as a contractor through a company rather than being a PAYE employee. I used to many years ago until the rules got too complicated for me. Totally legal and totally sensible.
