AIBU to say it isn't unexpected, or a surprise?

on the same day, we discover Farage - owner of four homes - has been avoiding tax on two fronts: stamp duty via his wife, and undeclared earnings from GB News. Such fucking double standards 🤬😤

I don't know about any of that.
I do know of his admiration for Putin though, so for that reason alone I'd never vote Reform. If Russia invades, I want a fight not a welcoming party.
Besides, Farage for all his private education and many millions, still comes across as a wide boy.

I bit like most governments, of all shades, we oldies remember the shenanigans of the Wilson governments of the 60s and 70s!

Don't need to be that old.... i remember Cameron, May, Bojo, Truss, Sunak, how many 'elections? chancellors? how many ministerial resignations?

Tax dodges & affairs.....

Our politicians never learn....

Living under a Reform run council is bad enough.

I'll take your reform run council and trump you, living next door to the reform council deputy who leaves their dogs at home alone with one barking all day, has mountains of stinking dog poo all over their yard, let's the aroma of cigarettes waft into your bedroom, had a poor lone duck locked in a small cage for months which was gone just after Christmas, and leaves their cats outside all night who cry for hours and wake you up. And also vomit in your garden from possibly eating the piles of dog poop. 🙈 We really need references before we vote people in 🤣

Rayner went after people, others gun for non Labour politicians. She stuffed up, lied and got found out.

Hopefully she can’t, and she’ll have to sell it ……….just after the new budget which is rumoured to include a new tax when you sell a property! She’d try and find a loophole to get out of paying that too!

If she wants to do that then I think she'll need a new firm of advisors after her current ones wouldn't back her lies.

cumbriaisbest · 05/09/2025 12:40

She also doesnt come across as whip smart. The job was too big for her

yes

But big enough for Johnson and Truss??

Disappointed by what I have read here, so far.

Got to page 6 and feel like I am on a Reform fangirl page.

She was always going. The right wing media despise her. She rose above her station and speaks for those the likes of Farage claim to speak for, yet will never ever care a shit about.

Fear, misogyny and classism was always getting rid of her.

scalt · 05/09/2025 15:00

While Boris and his mates are thinking "ha ha, they couldn't even put us in prison for the billions we conned out of the public, or our massive lies to Queen and country".

Is he 14 years old?

TizerorFizz · 05/09/2025 15:01

@beetr00 How can you possibly know what 630 MPs do? Back benches don’t earn a fortune. This is why many talented people won’t go near it as a job. When very clever and well off people do, like Nadim Zahawi, all that results is that they go due to very complex tax affairs. It’s always ending in “gotcha” and AR revelled in it. We do have a rudderless Labour Party who don’t know who they are at the moment. They don’t all agree with their own manifesto and have factions. It will let in clear minded Farage. The Brits like simplistic clarity, and no one else provides it.

But so many naive MNers believe that it all started with Cameron when in fact it goes back eons. I can't think of any party that hasn't had someone of doubtful character in it at some stage.

cumbriaisbest · 05/09/2025 15:02

@OrangePieHigh The job was too small for Mr Johnston I think.

Truss....there are no words.

Cameron absolutely shafted this country.

ilovebrie8 · 05/09/2025 15:03

Great news she should never have been deputy PM she was a shop floor union steward….she was there due to the unions.

Way out of her depth doesn’t come
close and now her tax evasion …she thought she’d get away with it.

she was already investigated when she sold her council home as neighbours said she never lived there so that was dodgy as well…

CaveMum · 05/09/2025 15:05

Pancakeflipper · 05/09/2025 14:29

Have we clearly established if she was given incorrect information or was deliberately cashing in?

TBH - I think if she'd not resigned over this, then the media would have kept hounding and digging on anything she is involved. Trial by social media all over again. We do this until we break the individual's mental health.

We get the politicians we deserve.

I've no party loyalities, but I am kind of sad that a strong woman who battled her way to do a role she gave a damn about, is gone and there's not been a full conclusive investigation. Fair do's if if has been proved she was committing fraud or tax evasion.

Majority of smart decent people would never want to be a politician - you can do fuck all right and get publicly smashed to bits.

It’s been established that she was given the original advice based on the detail she had provided. The advice also stated that she should consult tax specialists to be absolutely certain of the position but she chose not too bother. It was a deliberate choice not to seek additional advice despite specific recommendations.

She could always have contacted civil servants at HMRC directly if she really wanted to!

Earning £80k+ basic salary, having a home and all its bills paid for, being able to claim food and travel on expenses plus everything else would equate to a 'fortune' for many people.

"This is why many talented people won't go near it as a job"... Weirdly, and I might be the minority here, I don't think that anyone should be looking into becoming an MP to represent their constituents because it 'pays well'...

samG76 · 05/09/2025 15:10

Quaintazure hit the nail on the head. Even if the house was worth 650K, which lots of local estate agents seem to doubt, it doesn't follow that a quarter share was worth £162.5K. Probably no more than half that given that it couldn't be rented out as would be almost impossible to sell with an SEN resident. And her poor son doesn't seem to have got much benefit out of his mum buying a property 200+ miles away. I wonder if it was signed off by court of protection.

Why, because she comes from the working class North? 😂

Bumblebee72 · 05/09/2025 15:17

It seems like this has triggered absolute chaos in the Labour party. Powell gone, Murray gone, Nandy going, how will the markets react to this mess.

TizerorFizz · 05/09/2025 15:17

@Rednorth The money paid should go with the territory! The nasty social media and death threats! Plus the absolute need to legislate for all the population and understand that you cannot just shout at the other party.

If you are a highly intelligent barrister earning £1/2 million plus, why give that up to be an MP? Ditto anyone else running a successful company? No one good wants to be an mp. We need better people to make our laws. We definitely need a mix of backgrounds but I don’t want a government where no one has high levels of intelligence and intellect.

Also we seriously underpay our MPs when compared to other countries. We therefore get too many average people who want to make a name (or money) for themselves. They are not good enough as law makers. They are good at representing minorities and being an opposition. Get into government - look at the consequences! We need to attract better people into politics who are successful in other walks of life and the salary of an mp will not hack it.

WithIcePlease · 05/09/2025 15:19

@ByQuaintAzureWasp
As far as I understand, as a trustee she has a legal duty to the trust.
It seems to be that her son overpaid for his share of the house which could I believe be a criminal offence as she is a trustee

Who, as a mother would ask her disabled child, at not yet 18, to buy a share of his home rather than simply continue to provide a home for him as most mothers on here seem to even for adult DC without his problems?

It's bizarre

Different homes for primary residence for council tax and stamp duty is all ridiculous too.

Newmeagain · 05/09/2025 15:21

PropertyD · 05/09/2025 12:07

That small conveyancing company came out fighting. I hope they become more and more successful due to the way they handled this.

Shame on Rayner for bringing her disabled son into all of this whilst using his trust to pay to live with her latest boyfriend.

Yes, that really pissed me off. Sure, her personal circumstances may be complicated and difficult but that’s no excuse. So many of us have complicated and difficult circumstances and may feel like the tax system is against us. But that’s just life and we have to pay up. We have no choice.
