AIBU to say it isn't unexpected, or a surprise?

Firstly, she isn't his wife (not that it would matter if she was). Secondly, it isn't undeclared earnings - it is earnings paid through a company set up for the purpose. Neither of which are illegal (unlike not paying SD that is due). Even if his IR35 arrangements were deemed to be unlawful, it would incumbent upon the owners of GB News to hold responsibility under new laws around IR35. Farage is a lot of things, grifter, probably racist, divisive, nasty and an utter cockwomble. But one thing he isn't, I'm almost certain, is stupid. And I imagine he has (unlike Rayner) paid handsomely for the very best, water tight, Tax planning advice to ensure he is never caught out.

@Judashascomeintosomemoney

Farage is "probably racist"? Probably?????

Good. Another step towards the Reform Government we need to get this country sorted out. She was only there because of the unions in the first place.

Thanks for this comment. I needed a good laugh.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 05/09/2025 14:44

She rightly resigned. She didn't pay the tax due and didn't follow the legal advice to get expert tax advice. She is clearly stupid or so arrogant that she envisaged she would never get caught/held to account.

Far worse for me is the fact that, as trustee of her child's trust fund, she sold to her son's trust 25% of the house in Ashon Under Lyne. The house was clearly not worth anywhere near £650,000 and she sold the quarter share for £162,500. That can not be a mistake/error. I hope she is held to account for not acting in her son's best interests. She should be removed as a trustee, I certainly would not want her acting as trustee for me.

I bet Starmer is overjoyed. I think they were never aligned with their views. She winged it most of the time. The intelligence just wasnt there with her i'm afraid..

And let’s hope she can afford the mortgage on a backbencher’s salary.

Hopefully she can’t, and she’ll have to sell it ……….just after the new budget which is rumoured to include a new tax when you sell a property! She’d try and find a loophole to get out of paying that too!

dynamiccactus · 05/09/2025 14:46

I just think she's been really stupid.

All MPs know that they are under scrutiny and the media is out to get them. If you are female, Labour and working class, that is all magnified a million times.

Therefore she should have made sure that there was nothing for the Tory press to find.

It’s sleaze-ball.
And she isn’t one.

Actually it’s sleazeball (unhyphenated). And yes, she is one.

Violinist64 · 05/09/2025 14:46

At last.

God help this country if Reform get in. I hope we can then get small boats over to continental Europe and claim asylum!

I really really do not like the woman. She has voiced opinions about others actions which she over exaggerated and caused the end of their career. She has voiced opinions which have been harmful to others. To an extent she has been hoisted on her own petard.

She clearly isn’t very bright, she was never fit for high office. Starmer has always used her as a front or scape goat. It’s going to interesting who is used now.

Edited

As she has done to others so has been done to her.
Good.

Not in possession of the legendary ‘critical thinking’ of the left we’re always being told about on mumsnet

Pedallleur · 05/09/2025 14:48

Now we need to know about Dr.Kemi and the course that never was. Not quite as bad as Angela who should have asked Tony Blair the correct way to avoid the stamp duty

Living under a Reform run council is bad enough.

One of the worst things is that she inflated the price of her share of the house she 'sold' to her son's trust, so that she got more of his money. In what world is that acceptable behaviour.

Surely that is illegal!

And should she not then cared about the more left wing press, e.g. The Guardian?

Shouldnt be an MP either imo. Liars and cheats shouldn’t be in office.

I understand the sentiment but in reality, who would be left, of any party!

You see, I think they always get this mixed up? The Left generally have thinking which can be easily criticised

on the same day, we discover Farage - owner of four homes - has been avoiding tax on two fronts: stamp duty via his wife, and undeclared earnings from GB News. Such fucking double standards 🤬😤

But his is above board and legal. That's the difference. I find it unbelievable that Rayner did what she did thinking she would get away with it. Clearly a dumbarse in emperors clothes. You can fool some of the people some of the time I guess...

Sad that she has had to go, but at the same time find it refreshing. It’s not so long ago we had a government who refused to resign over anything.

Edited

I bit like most governments, of all shades, we oldies remember the shenanigans of the Wilson governments of the 60s and 70s!

Surely Jeremy Hunt?

Bought 7 flats and in doing so avoided any additional SLDT, using a loophole he himself had just introduced.
Of course no faux outrage from the 'right over this...... guess he was in he correct lane....

What on earth was Rayner thinking?? Get the law changed first, then you can avoid tax lawfully.....

She lied about having followed advice; she was advised to seek specialist advice.

She did get advice. Just not good enough advice.

Again read her life story. It is not absolute nonsense.

The story wot she wrote?

Unnecessary and inaccurate. There is not a single person here slating Rayner for being female and working class. Just the fact that they feel she has been intentionally dishonest and is now discovering why we don’t throw stones if we live in glass houses (whether owned by a trust or not).
