What is all the hype about? Some of the mums at school rave about it and a couple of friends suggested it for a meal. I checked out the menu online and it was quite pricey I thought (for what it is).

Went today anyway, because it'd been suggested by the friends. I was SO underwhelmed. Basic chain restaurant food. Nice steak (not fabulous, just OK) but the rest of the food was very average.

I definitely won't bother going back. Anyone had a better experience? Is it just me (although friend wasn't wowed either)?

The fact that there is 175 posts and no one has even bothered to mention steak aging tells you all you need to know about the critics on here.

Yes fine quality steak will taste the same as frozen shit from a low budget chain if you have the crap burnt out of it, which I suspect is what most people on here who think M&C are nothing special are doing.

I wouldn't say M&C is the best steak I have ever tasted, although for the UK it is pretty good and is superior to all the other chain restaurants I have tried here. I won't generally eat rare steak in the UK because it is just not good enough, but for M&C I make an exception.

As for the rest of the food there, not really my area of expertise, but it all seemed OK to me. I did have some chicken wings once that were messy but pretty good and deserve an honourable mention.

I agree and I definitely don’t understand the lettuce course. The waiter asked if I’d like a dressing on my huge wedge of lettuce and I said no and he looked me like I was crazy! Me!!! He’s the loon who gave me an entire wedge of lettuce!

😂
when you are ordering, and they ask you what topping you want on your lettuce… I always tell them they can keep the lettuce!

LeopardPrintLipstick · 30/08/2025 23:05

I’ve stayed in one once with two of my DC, the room was huge and DC loved the breakfast.
The food is fine, I like the lettuce with the blue cheese, DH loves the Camembert mashed potatoes. I don’t like the onion loaf thing it’s always a bit hard and greasy.
I wouldn’t rave about it but as chains go it’s not the worst by any means. I’ve been to a Wetherspoons twice recently and both times it was awful, I’d rather have gone to McDonald’s and I hate McDonald’s.

RaraRachael · 30/08/2025 23:09

What is the point of the lettuce? Most silly side dish ever.

Not sure you can call others 'Wetherspoons clientele' when you don't understand what an objective pronoun is...

Got through my entire life, degree, post grad and successful career without knowing what an objective pronoun is. That’s right.

There are better steak chains now (love Blacklock for example) but M&C isn’t usually in an area where there are choices of steak chains.
We have a local one and it’s reliably good. Average prices. I see it as a family night out place. Certainly it has a lot more large groups and fewer couples than a usual restaurant.
Never had a bad steak in my local (Chertsey).
The lettuce is their default side. It is a quarter of an iceberg not a half! I like it.
Such snobbery on here as usual.

HerewardtheSleepy · 31/08/2025 08:00

Must admit I've never heard of them. After this I won't be seeking one out. Chain restaurants are seldom worth the money IMO.

GenieGenealogy · 31/08/2025 08:23

DS has a part time job for their parent company and I have an app which gives me 20% off the total bill, or if he's with us, 33% off everything.

I'm not a massive steak fan but DH has always said the one closest to us is good.

SomethingFun · 31/08/2025 08:36

I’ve never been to one but the one vaguely local to me looks nice enough from the outside. We don’t eat out much anymore as it’s so unbearably expensive but last time we did we did the lunch menu at Hawksmoor, which is another steak chain, and that was lovely and good value for money.

I’ll be surprised if middle of the road chains survive with the col to be honest. We are high earners and we can’t afford to eat in them so we now do cheap and cheerful and then go somewhere more fancy a couple of times a year. We used to eat out loads a couple of years ago 😭

Megifer · 31/08/2025 08:49

I quite liked it but it wasn't hugely different to getting a steak from my local pub.

We all went in jeans/jogging bottoms/shorts 😅 Had no idea there was a dress code. Its definitely not a dress code type of place so that makes it seem a bit up its own arse IMO.

That seemed to be the dress code at the one I went to. I had on a bog standard dress and sandals on and felt overdone.

The one near me has 3 courses for £20 during the week which I think makes it popular. It's the only time we've ever been, can't afford it on an evening!

jamnpancakes · 31/08/2025 15:34

The 2 course lunch special is 16.95 currently.

Yes! We went to cow shed and really enjoyed it. One of the few places I will go for steak.

Reassuring to hear the positive reviews of Cow Shed - we are going in a few weeks when we go up to Liverpool. DS and his gf booked it and they know DH and I are unashamed restaurant snobs love a good steak 😆

I've never been to a Miller & Carter but always assumed they were Toby Carveries with airs and graces. This thread hasn't convinced me otherwise.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 31/08/2025 17:17

I am not a great steak fan and hate chewy meat so only eat rare fillet and M and C are the best I have had outside the US.

Noodge · 31/08/2025 17:33

I've been once for a colleagues get together. Found a part of a plastic bag in my nachos. They gave us two free bottles of cheap wine due to that.
I were driving.
Haven't been back.
