What is all the hype about? Some of the mums at school rave about it and a couple of friends suggested it for a meal. I checked out the menu online and it was quite pricey I thought (for what it is).

Went today anyway, because it'd been suggested by the friends. I was SO underwhelmed. Basic chain restaurant food. Nice steak (not fabulous, just OK) but the rest of the food was very average.

I definitely won't bother going back. Anyone had a better experience? Is it just me (although friend wasn't wowed either)?

Its just a modern day Harvester isnt it?

Ive never been in one as we cant eat full meals these days but I assume its just a bog standard chain, nothing wrong with that

Whats the hype about it, Ive never heard anyone ever mention them!!

Satisfiedwithanapple · 30/08/2025 08:42

Love it. The a la carte is pricey but the lunchtime fixed price menu is amazing value.

Agree they vary - I prefer one locally.

I’m glad the judgy twats on this thread don’t like it, I would prefer to not frequent places where people like that go.

I would add that I do also frequent Weatherspoons

thinklagoon · 30/08/2025 08:50

I’d never heard of it and opened this thread thinking it was something similar to Bayliss & Harding! Is the lettuce wedge mandatory, like the lettuce and walnut salad at Relais de l'Entrecôte?

Catsandcannedbeans · 30/08/2025 09:02

My brother used to work there while he was at uni and we used to go for birthdays and stuff when I was a kid (with his discount of course) and I thought it was so posh and so fancy!! I used to put on my Sunday best to go and then get miffed when other people were in t shirts 😭. I went last year with DH and DD (Before she was veggie) and it wasn’t as good, there’s lots of better and cheaper stake houses where we are. It was funny though because DD also thought it was very posh (the one where we live is in a really nice building).

You can get much better food for cheaper, but with Miller and Carter it’s normally in a pretty nice building, nice staff, and you know what you’re getting.

I love our local one. The service is always great and the staff are lovely. It reintroduced me to the joys of lettuce. Seriously.

There's a phrase not used often! The 'joys of lettuce'!!!!

I'm a judgy twat, but am happy to go to Wetherspoons. I just don't like being mugged off. Don't pretend to be something it isn't.

The most average place and I don’t know what’s so great about it. I’ve eaten in 3 different locations and ALL of them were so average- unseasoned massive sized portions.

80smonster · 30/08/2025 09:29

Basic, not in anyway more special than Giraffe.

BlondeFool · 30/08/2025 09:29

Our local one is very mediocre. And huge with not many customers so the atmosphere is flat. We all miss the pub it was before Miller and Carter bought it. I much prefer Flat Iron.

I’ve never heard of it either! And I’m in London, surrounded by restaurants and people who eat out regularly. I was actually starting to worry (not really sure what about) until I saw your post 😂 It has made me crave a steak though - and maybe even a bit of lettuce…

MrsR87 · 30/08/2025 09:42

I’ve been twice and won’t be going again.

The first time, I was very excited as we love steak and we had heard great things. We had a starter and main and intended to have a couple of drinks. The drinks we ordered before we ordered our food arrived as we were finishing our main course - despite asking for them when our starter arrived and when our main arrived. This annoyed me and I thought the steak was okay but no better than that, but on reflection a few days later thought perhaps my view had been negatively affected by the poor service so we decided to go again to a different branch and while the service was much better and friendly and knowledgable - the steak was still just okay. I did really like the lettuce wedge with blue cheese dressing though 😍

Me and my husband love cooking and he in particular loves cooking steak and so now I very rarely order steak when out, despite loving it, as it is seldom nicer than what my husband makes. We bought ourselves a cast iron skillet a few years ago and it really makes a delicious steak 👍🏻

Ours is always busy. You have to book.

CuriousKangaroo · 30/08/2025 10:16

Completely agree, OP. There are so many better steak (chain and independent) restaurants out there. I do not understand the love for M&C at all.

InveterateWineDrinker · 30/08/2025 10:45

I've never been to one, but they were once described to me as Harvesters for people with Range Rovers on PCP. That's enough to put me off.

I don't have a Range Rover, I like very small cars, but I think such a judgemental attitude is just horrible.

If it was no good when you went you should have complained and asked for a discount.

CherrieTomaties · 30/08/2025 16:45

TheAmusedQuail · 30/08/2025 07:35

Yeah! It was exactly that. The majority of the male customers looked like they would enjoy painting red and white flags on roundabouts.

There were a couple of bouncer type men, punch first, think later. The younger women had inflated lips. To be fair there were also a lot of families with tween aged children too.

Exactly like a pub chain. It was clean and tidy, but defo NOT my idea of a nice restaurant. I'm not a snob though, if the food had been good, it would have been fine. But it wasn't.

“I'm not a snob”

😂

In the very same post you’ve judged a bunch of complete strangers on their appearance in an incredibly derogatory way. Gross.

NoSoupForU · 30/08/2025 17:09

Its quite shit. Pub food at steakhouse prices. Aside from the steak, its frozen. The lettuce wedge and the onion loaf are good but I wouldn't thank you for anything else.

It is harvest just under a different name.

The lunchtime menu mugs no one off, it’s really good value.

Crikeyalmighty · 30/08/2025 17:15

I don’t like steak so wouldn’t rush there , but my son tells me it’s perfectly ok but not amazing - bit like the old Berni inns -

It’s pretty crap really , just a glorified harvester but people love to post their date night photos of the sharing board. We sometimes go for the lunch deal as my mum likes it which isn’t bad value but I would pay the full prices

TonTonMacoute · 30/08/2025 17:22

Agree, completely underwhelming. The sort of restaurant chain that gives British food such a bad rep among Europeans

LhudeSingCuccu · 30/08/2025 17:26

We went to one for a work’s lunch. It was exactly like I thought it’d be. Cheap, not great but edible. Exactly like the Beefeater steak houses I remember from my childhood.
