What is all the hype about? Some of the mums at school rave about it and a couple of friends suggested it for a meal. I checked out the menu online and it was quite pricey I thought (for what it is).

Went today anyway, because it'd been suggested by the friends. I was SO underwhelmed. Basic chain restaurant food. Nice steak (not fabulous, just OK) but the rest of the food was very average.

I definitely won't bother going back. Anyone had a better experience? Is it just me (although friend wasn't wowed either)?

Yeah! It was exactly that. The majority of the male customers looked like they would enjoy painting red and white flags on roundabouts.

There were a couple of bouncer type men, punch first, think later. The younger women had inflated lips. To be fair there were also a lot of families with tween aged children too.

Exactly like a pub chain. It was clean and tidy, but defo NOT my idea of a nice restaurant. I'm not a snob though, if the food had been good, it would have been fine. But it wasn't.

Just wow.

Do tell, what does a flag painting male look like of out interest?

londongirl12 · 30/08/2025 20:34

If you want good steak, find a Flat Iron restaurant. Amazing!!

Probably before your time, but something like Eddie Yeats out of Coronation Street in the 1980s.

There’s a small one on the outskirts of the city I live in and they do great midweek deals. We got two rump steaks with all the trimmings, 2 cocktails of our choice, 2 mini desserts and 2 lattes for £55. You can’t argue with that!

Some of us have had underwhelming experience eating at M+C whilst others love it.
Hopefully your friend loves it.
Never saw any Eddie Yeats look a likes 😁👍

@24Dogcuddler I agree. I wasn't expecting The Fat Duck, but it was Wetherspoons clientele. I wasn't dressed up but felt overdressed.

Our local M and C has actually refused admission to people for not following the dress code.

It wasn’t bad at all.

It's just a bit of a posher Harvester...without the salad bar

Mumsnet is really weird about lots of things - just ignore your friend will love the voucher.

We used to love M&C, but noticed prices rocket and quality nosedive in recent years. It's also really annoying that the server has to "check with the chef" if you ask for anything remotely customised.

We have now found a local steak restaurant which is so much better.

”Wetherspoons clientele” is exactly the right phrase to describe. Me and DH got a voucher and used that to go, glad we did as would have been horrified if we’d have spent our own money eating there. It’s overpriced, the service was crap, the potato thing they serve is so greasy. Such an expensive, low quality meal. The steak itself was nice enough but no better than a decent pub.

Not sure you can call others 'Wetherspoons clientele' when you don't understand what an objective pronoun is...

That definitely explains the shatteringly crisp onion loaf. Onion brick more like.

We haven't got one anywhere near us, but my sister really rates the one in her town.

The Nando’s of the steak world. Overrated, average.

Noone dresses up to go to Nandos and pretends it's fancy food though?

It's ok I asked if the servers name was a certain initial and thought that's not fair if identified or being discussed online.

WickWood · 30/08/2025 22:25

Just like any chain restaurant in my opinion!
