Miller & Carter

What is all the hype about? Some of the mums at school rave about it and a couple of friends suggested it for a meal. I checked out the menu online and it was quite pricey I thought (for what it is).

Went today anyway, because it'd been suggested by the friends. I was SO underwhelmed. Basic chain restaurant food. Nice steak (not fabulous, just OK) but the rest of the food was very average.

I definitely won't bother going back. Anyone had a better experience? Is it just me (although friend wasn't wowed either)?

The one near me is good and they do have a special lunch menu (except Sunday) which is very good value…

Are you in Liverpool by any chance? If so, try Cow Shed.

We tried Miller and Carter in Aughton a few months ago. Shite steak and even shitter chips.

We went to Cow Shed, because Gaucho was full. It was amazing!
M&C is fine, we have 3 locally, and have been to Edinburgh (Cramond Brig) and Aberdeen. They are pretty consistent I think and I love steak. It does annoy me you have to have the extras because they are often wasted.

Yes! We went to cow shed and really enjoyed it. One of the few places I will go for steak.

They are the best bit! I bloody love a wedge.. the blue cheese one to be exact. Absolutely fabulous dribble

Yep, my favourite too. I haven't been for a while but other posters are saying the wedge is served between courses. It used to be served alongside your main course, like a side salad. Has that changed?

dancingbymyself · 30/08/2025 17:53

It’s the Baylis & Harding of restaurants…

They bring it before the main course usually. But I’ve always thought it was meant to be a side dish, although DH tends to eat his while waiting, so it’s kind of up to you. They don’t collect it before the mains arrive.

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten that. They do usually bring it out first and ask you what dressing you want. I always eat mine as a side dish to the main, unless like your DH I can't wait!

DC (10) loves a steak so we’ve been to M&C a few times - there’s two locally, the one in the more ‘upmarket’ area is fairly crap, the one in an awkward location in the ‘downmarket’ area is always very good (guess they have to make up for the bloody nightmare parking!). M&Cs days are numbered however, one of the local pubs has started doing a brilliant steak night for £15 a head…

I dunno, they might be OK. I think Wetherspoons aren't doing steaks / mixed grills anymore (disappointing the hard-core carnivores) due to costs, so maybe they'll just move across to M&S. It's a very similar customer base.

TheAmusedQuail · 30/08/2025 07:35

Yeah! It was exactly that. The majority of the male customers looked like they would enjoy painting red and white flags on roundabouts.

There were a couple of bouncer type men, punch first, think later. The younger women had inflated lips. To be fair there were also a lot of families with tween aged children too.

Exactly like a pub chain. It was clean and tidy, but defo NOT my idea of a nice restaurant. I'm not a snob though, if the food had been good, it would have been fine. But it wasn't.

Aye you're not a snob(!). Read this post back to yourself!

RaraRachael · 30/08/2025 18:30

Been twice. Wouldn't rave about it although my kids think it's amazing.

Gladysknightjustwalkinmyshoes · 30/08/2025 18:36

Aberdeen one is popular don't see the attraction myself been four times (gift vouchers).
The fish chips on last visit was awful between 17 and £18 definitely not worth it.

RaraRachael · 30/08/2025 19:21

@Gladysknightjustwalkinmyshoes it's the Aberdeen one I've been to. We had a very annoying waiter who seemed to think we wanted to hear his whole life story although others thought he was amazing.

Agree, completely underwhelming. The sort of restaurant chain that gives British food such a bad rep among Europeans

It’s like playing food snobbery bingo.

I can never wait to get back to British food from anywhere in Europe because I like vegetables. But each to their own!

The idea that food in Britain is worse than the heavenly continent is just fantasy. I assume you’ve never been anywhere Germanic for a start.

I've thought about what I asked, probably best not to answer could be outing to person that works there

They aren’t. It’s shite.

Maddy70 · 30/08/2025 19:47

It's pub grub to me

JustPinkFinch · 30/08/2025 19:51

Lettuce posts making me cackle 😆

The one at the Mailbox in Brum is nice. I also used to love Gaucho on Swallow St in London. That was always the nicest steak but it's a fair few years since I have been now.

MrsJPBP · 30/08/2025 19:54

Went to M&C for the first time in Edinburgh in December, took my team at work for lunch. It didn’t start well in that their heating system was broken and the place was absolutely freezing.
We were in there for 3.5 hours and only managed a main course each for 6 people. Ran out of time to order desserts as we had somewhere else to be. I had to send my meal back as it was freezing cold and inedible. Won’t be bothering again!!

No, eating with flag painting Reform voters isn't my thing. Not ashamed of it. The racial element is an issue also, but yes, I'm judgemental about them. Not the reason I wouldn't go back though. The food was enough for that.

I am so so far from being a flag painting Reformer. Honestly, how can choosing a half decent steak restaurant (which the one near here seems to be) be any indication of your politics?!

WFHforevermore · 30/08/2025 20:22

SunshineAndFizz · 29/08/2025 22:25

Does anyone actually eat them?

I love the wedge salad!! Blue cheese....yum!!

Wasn't referring to you. I was talking about the customers in the restaurant when I was there this week.

Any restaurant has a target customer. The customers in my local M&C came as a little bit of a shock is all. But like I said, if the food had been good, it wouldn't have put me off.
