Miller & Carter

What is all the hype about? Some of the mums at school rave about it and a couple of friends suggested it for a meal. I checked out the menu online and it was quite pricey I thought (for what it is).

Went today anyway, because it'd been suggested by the friends. I was SO underwhelmed. Basic chain restaurant food. Nice steak (not fabulous, just OK) but the rest of the food was very average.

I definitely won't bother going back. Anyone had a better experience? Is it just me (although friend wasn't wowed either)?

It’s definitely better than Nando’s and they do a fairly extensive gluten free menu which is a plus as many places can’t be bothered .

EggyBreads · 29/08/2025 23:54

It’s basically what Bernie Inn was back in the day. Underwhelming, mass produced food for unsophisticated palates.

Elphamouche · 30/08/2025 00:39

Really depends on location. Two nearest us are fine, the one in the city is great - and a more formal atmosphere.

DisgruntledPelican23 · 30/08/2025 00:43

Are you in Liverpool by any chance? If so, try Cow Shed.

We tried Miller and Carter in Aughton a few months ago. Shite steak and even shitter chips.

wizzler · 30/08/2025 00:47

M and C is the only restaurant I’ve ever walked out of before ordering. They were out of the first three things on the menu I tried to order . Said they’d had a busy weekend … but it was Wednesday !

WilfredsPies · 30/08/2025 00:54

It’s an over priced chain restaurant with ideas above its station, with its ‘smart casual’ dress code ffs! It’s not far from being on a par with Beefeater in terms of food quality.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/08/2025 00:57

We went to one and enjoyed it, went there again when we were in that area, it was consistently good (for what it’s meant to be), very good service too.
Then went to one somewhere else and it was poor with bad service.

It seems surprising for a chain to be that variable.

Bernadinetta · 30/08/2025 01:04

What restaurants do you like @TheAmusedQuail OP?
(nb- I’ve got no skin in the game- I’m a vegetarian and have been to Miller & Carter 2-3 times with groups over the years but not recently so no strong feelings either way, just wondered what you do like!)

novocaine4thesoul · 30/08/2025 02:32

Been to our local one and it was good enough, 8 of us and had the two course special for about £25 ish, each, have had worse, have had better. Nice enough, not paying that much so can't complain. The food was fine, the half lettuce is obviously popular from looking at the thread, wasn't my thing but each to their own, serving staff (one guy) were slightly weird, coming once to get us to do reviews halfway through, said it would help him to win something, which all 8 of us did (pretty much on the spot, he was polite and it was no trouble) and then he asked again (same guy) for us to do it again at the end, and we said, but we have already done it half an hour ago??, at which point he apologised for forgetting that he had already asked us. If I had to moan about it, it was this. Restaurant staff should not be pestering their customers to do reviews; and not incentivising their staff to pester for them. I get that it is important to get feedback - most customers will give it freely and won't mind a small reminder on a card (which they can either take up, or ignore) but twice within an hour when you are just trying to have a phones-down meal with family was a bit off-putting.

Saggyoldclothbody · 30/08/2025 02:44

I’ve been once. It seemed very complicated to order but then I’d had a drink and was with friends chatting so not paying as much attention as I might have. Nice chateaubriand. I don’t remember a lettuce.

AnimalFarm567 · 30/08/2025 02:50

DH and the in laws LOVE IT.

I can't say anything in real life but I really don't rate it.

BettysRoasties · 30/08/2025 02:58

It’s just harvester pimped up, same owners.

In fact our harvester closed for a referb and opened up as a M&C same staff just less food options. Now people go thinking they are fancy.

IamnotSethRogan · 30/08/2025 04:00

I think some of them are better than others randomly. I've been to a few for various reasons ans they were average at best but there's one near me that is always excellent for whatever reason. It's not my favourite place in the world but the steak at this one is always reliably good

CarlaLemarchant · 30/08/2025 04:22

It’s had its day. Was novelty and a better experience 10-15 years ago. Food and portions were better (I’m sure that lettuce wedge has shrunk!). Whilst it wasn’t swanky, there was a dress code of sorts, no sportswear etc, but now anything goes.

It used to be somewhere we might visit on a birthday or special occasion but we wouldn’t now, mainly because there are much better options around us, including better steak restaurants. We last went about 18 months-2 years ago and it was bang average but still expensive.

REDB99 · 30/08/2025 04:39

It’s got a slightly chavvy reputation around my way, people who think they’re going to a high end restaurant, dressing up like a footballer’s wife, men with far too much after shave etc.

Miller and Carter is raved about by people who cannot cook a decent steak themselves.

This. Or who've never been somewhere that actually serves good steak.

EggyBreads · 29/08/2025 23:54

This is what I've always said. A Bernie Inn, only not quite as good and expensive.

I've only been to Miller and Carter once and it was poor, the steak wasn't even cooked as I'd asked.

MaryBerrysFannyHammock · 29/08/2025 22:26

Exactly. I'd never pay restaurant prices for steak and chips. It's what you make at home when you CBA standing in front of the stove for more than 5 minutes. Good ready made chips in the air fryer and do the steak while the chips are cooking.

I save eating out for food I cannot easily make at home and unlike a PP, favour independents over chains because I want to pay for freshly cooked food, not a ready meal.

Countryspaniel · 30/08/2025 06:38

I've always thought of it as the working class idea of fancy.

curtaintwitcher78 · 30/08/2025 06:44

It was ok years ago but I still wouldn't have raved about it. I think Bar & Block is more a match of price and quality if you're looking for an affordable chain restaurant with decent steak. Côte do nice steak too.

ThejoyofNC · 30/08/2025 06:44

It's nothing to rave about but saying it's like a hungry horse or a wetherspoons where you're served microwave meals is definitely just untrue.

Toddlerteaplease · 30/08/2025 06:46

Trumpthecant · 29/08/2025 22:09

I’ve been once. They gave me half a lettuce which was weird as it was between courses, so I wasn’t sure what to do with it. The steak was….fine. Nothing more nothing less. Just fine.

probs will never go back.

Same here, the lettuce thing was bizarre. Apparently the ‘salad course is an American thing’ the food was good though.

ElleintheWoods · 30/08/2025 07:09

SunshineAndFizz · 29/08/2025 22:25

Yeah what’s with the random half lettuce?!

Does anyone actually eat them?

Yes, this is the best bit there!! It’s lettuce served with a sauce of your choosing. That and the crispy onion are my favourite things there 🤣

Not even kidding, they are, steak is not bad either.

if you go again try the lettuce, you’re missing out.

Honestly, this website sometimes… 😑

TheSummerof25 · 30/08/2025 07:16

”Wetherspoons clientele” is exactly the right phrase to describe. Me and DH got a voucher and used that to go, glad we did as would have been horrified if we’d have spent our own money eating there. It’s overpriced, the service was crap, the potato thing they serve is so greasy. Such an expensive, low quality meal. The steak itself was nice enough but no better than a decent pub.
