Racist Threads

PhilippaGeorgiou · 27/08/2025 13:11

Wasn't sure where to post this, but I thought AIBU would be ok. I am not running this as a poll, because I don't care about anyones opinions on the matter. And if anyone wants to respond with more racism, don't bother because I won't be engaging for even a second.

Right at the moment this site is not being overrun by racists because MNHQ has determined that there are no racists on the site and it's abuse to tell anyone they are a racist (even when they are). However, there are multiple threads expressing racism every single day, all rehearsing the same old misinformation and bogus narratives. Not one of those posters want to engage - they become abusive and offensive if anyone produces remotely evidenced facts. Their "facts" are the only truthful facts. Everyone else is a "woman hating woke leftist". Which is apparently not abus, according to MNHQ. MNHQ have made is abundantly clear that they will not moderate misinformation, and are blithely happy to allow most abuse to stand.

Here's the thing - there's pretty much nobody on those threads that is genuinely interested in having a discussion or debating information. There is nobody jumping on those threads saying that they don't really understand the different views and positions and would like to know more. Unsurprising, anyone who actually wants to explore the issue, the absolute last place to look to do that would be yet another toxic thread here. Probably the only good thing is that it really is highly unlikely anyone with a real curiousity about the subject would look to form opinions based on the toxic formula of MN.

The only thing that these threads are good for is clicks and ££££'s in the bank for Justine and the site.

So anti-racists - I suggest that we all stop answering these threads altogether. I know it is hard to see the racism stand (although apparently not for the owners of the site or the moderators) unchallenged, but every single challange does nothing but feed the flames and earn money for MN. You all know that the people who are not racists will spend 20% of their posts posting misinformation and 80% posting goady barbs and personal insults, just to keep the threads going. It will be incredibly boring for them if they only have each other to talk to. The threads will die without oxygen. And MN makes no money out of clicks that haven't happened. It's a win all around.

And if you want to do something proactive, instead of engaging with people who aren't going to listen, why not raise your concerns about the racism with the advertisers? They are being associated with it by their presence, and are clearly far more likely to influence the owners of the site than the people posting on it.

I've been off mumsnet for a while because of the racist and transphobic nonsense I keep reading on here. I'm not saying people aren't allowed to have their opinion, but the sheer nastiness and intolerance is unbearable. Whatever happened to just been kind, decent human beings?

PandoraSocks · 27/08/2025 16:01

ilovesooty · 27/08/2025 15:57

I wouldn't even waste time engaging with them. There's no point.

Yes, someone else just said that to me!

I like the 🕊 idea.

It does feel very despairing.
My thoughts are, that to be a racist you have to be in quite a lot of emotional pain already. It’s trauma dumping in the most easy way, i.e. not being able to own your own pain so dumping it on the most vulnerable in the community.

They probably just need a hug, but unfortunately the behaviour is so repulsive, they become even more isolated and lonely and in emotional pain

Who is the ‘most vulnerable community’ you’re talking about here?

Justagirl95 · 27/08/2025 16:02

MN is known as prosecco stormfront for a reason. Absolutely vile stuff on here sometimes.

@PhilippaGeorgiou , you're not wrong. I'm yet to meet one who wishes to have a conversation. I learnt the term sea-lioning in the last week. Apparently you're trolling if you want to understand their viewpoints 🤷🏾‍♀️.

I do love that term! It really hits the spot for the type of haranguing you get from them. 🦭

Anti-Irish racism is rampant and has always been accepted on here. It's just taken a step further and now racism against any and all foreigners is accepted. I assume most of the those posters have similar attitudes towards locals who are not white.

I'm not sure totally ignoring them is the way to go as yes, while the posts will die, not challenging them can be seen as tacit approval.

I’m so sorry you have experienced this. I can’t say I’ve seen it but I don’t tend to look at the more political threads.

I know there is so much sad history between Britain and Ireland but I admire Irish culture and have several dear Irish friends. I wish our countries could be good friends in the future.

"Being kind" ended up in women almost losing our sex based rights. But apparently women's rights are transphobic.

I think this site - influential as it is - is likely being targeted by the billionaire oligarch capitalists behind Reform UK / GB News / the flags bollocks / hotel yelling.

This.

Jujujudo · 27/08/2025 16:12

I had my a. Lint suspended for calling out direct racism. It’s an echo chamber in here.

As Magdalene Berns rightly said: I’d rather be rude than a fucking liar.

BeardofHagrid · 27/08/2025 16:23

I’m not on here much atm, I’ve been busy following the trial of Hadush Kebatu when I’m not on shift. What’s been said? Sounds awful :(

RockyRogue1001 · 27/08/2025 16:25

I agree with much on here.

But that means reading those ghastly threads, and I'd rather avoid them

Me too.

Simply put a 💐 after every post that's racist/ offensive/ massively overstepping. Instead of the good old fashioned mumsnet biscuit. Suggest doing the same with painted roundabout too!

We tried this as teachers during Covid. The pile ons! The bitching on and off the threads! The comments from HQ!

ilovesooty · 27/08/2025 15:57

Well I'm one of the people who you've decided isn't worth engaging with. I agree absolutely with @PandoraSocks definition of racism and I also agree that racism and/or discrimination is abhorrent. As a mixed race woman, I know something about both. The problem lies in the cancellation of genuine discussion. We saw the same with the trans issue. Anyone who dared suggest that perhaps it needed further debate was deemed instantly transphobic and dragged off to the stocks. I assume this thread is largley about illegal immigration, in which case it is only natural people want to talk about it. I would also point out that it's rather entitled and presumptive to assume that only white British citizens have concerns and questions.

Fizzer5 · 27/08/2025 16:31

Will you accept that much about race has been denied and hidden by Officials including current Labour politicians. We are not told the truth. We are not deemed worthy of a clear answer.
The excesses of the damage to children, mainly girls in northern cities like Rochdale generated much anger. The abuse was reported but for two years very little was done about it. Most of those perpetrators were not white indigenous people.

Currently many of us object to the influx of foreign people. We are finding that nobody is listening, The PM doesn't care and shrugs his shoulders. No one in government is doing a damn thing.
We object to this rise in population because of the crowding of towns and schools and housing estates and roads and wherever one wants to go. We are expected to both cope with this and finance it through taxation.
Oh and please keep on voting Labour or waste your vote entirely and vote LibDem

"Being kind" ended up in women almost losing our sex based rights. But apparently women's rights are transphobic.

This is a good example
I supported trans rights but not to the extent they eroded women's sports and places or allowed children to permanently adjust their bodies
But yes some of the comments I see on that board are vile and mocking

Same as I might want a decent conversation about how to minimise illegal immigration or even encourage immigration that we need and value as a society. But the vile rhetoric and clear links to reform and worse and everything they stand for, utter bile
And I judge you for those views
And you are right @mnhqare allowing lots of it and probably being targeted

Totally agree @TealScroller

It’s bloody depressing how far right and transphobic this site has become in recent times.
I’m also thinking of giving it a break.

On the influx of foreign people ( or immigration as its known) my view is that if the government has agreed to this immigration then they should provide the services to support it, its part of the deal.

Fizzer5 · 27/08/2025 16:40

Yes @sleepwouldbenice, they won't tell us why it was agreed in the first place we do not need the mass of unskilled scarcely educated that is just pitching up. There was no budget or plan about paying for it.

factor50fan · 27/08/2025 16:42

Magenta82 · 27/08/2025 15:25

This.

Is it racist to be concerned about the affects mass immigration has on the economy and culture of the UK?

People have seen their quality of life go down, this has coincided with an increase in immigration. There has been an increase in GDP, but a decrease in GDP per capita.

There has been a lot of things coming out about rape and sexual abuse, that the authorities have ignored, in part out of fear of being labelled racist.

There are a lot of people who feel that the culture of the UK is changing for the worse, they want to hold on to what makes it a great place to live.

A lot of the people who voice their fears have been called racist, some of them are racist, most probably aren't. It doesn't help that there is a class element, working class areas are hit harder by the changes, because of the cheaper housing, working class jobs are affected more. The working class people who complain are then written off as ignorant, stupid, racist, uneducated etc by people who live in middle class areas, who have middle class jobs, who don't walk the same streets or see the same things.

This.

iwishihadaname · 27/08/2025 16:42

In my city there have protests about asylum seekers protect our women and girls etc because of horrible things some asylum seekers have done or been accused of doing. For example Epping By the protesters logic all asylum seekers are danger .so following on from that logic if a university student from Plymouth for example does or is accused the same crime as asylum seekers in hotels then all male university students are danger to local women. My city has a very large number of students (more than one university )these people protesting the ex hotels should be having protests outside the university campus or/and city centre never seen such a protest the number of students studying sociology or history the university would easily outnumber the small number of people living in the ex hotels

There has always been people with racist views. But until recently it was less acceptable to be so open about it times
