Toasted tiger bread with butter and jam...lighthearted.

As the title says. Toasted till dark but not burnt tiger bread with lashings of salted butter and a thick spread of extra special strawberry jam. Am I being an unreasonable weirdo with both butter and jam? Or am I a very reasonable buttery jam munching slavery carb muncher? How do you take yours? If you like toast/butter/jam? Or too scared and just toast/jam. 😃

The only acceptable preparation is:

Toast + butter + whatever topping you want .

Toast must go with butter. If no butter, then no toast.

Butter + peanut butter is fine, peanut butter is not butter, it's ground up peanuts. It's too claggy without butter.

Anyone who eats toast + jam, no butter, needs to be fired from a cannon into the sea!

(My resolve on the butter issue gets shakey when it comes to chocolate spread because obviously butter plus chocolate = wrong. The answer is to not eat chocolate spread on toast/bread. Dip biscuits in it instead.)

I applaud every one of your points except that tbh I'd quite happily eat buttered toast with chocolate spread!

YABU.

I was diagnosed with celiac 5 years ago and I can never eat delicious, soft white bread again.

(Please no suggestions GF bread, it’s horrendous and full of shite and I’ve tried baking my own, all sorts of different recipes and it’s all a poor comparison to real bread).

Edited

You have my absolute sympathy...my Mum (was), brother AND SiL (are) all coeliac and bread is the one thing that I really (did) and do feel for them over.

Conversely, Warburton's GF tiger bread was about the best of a bad bunch for Mum, particularly toasted - it almost looked like normal bread sometimes!

Eightdayz · 07/08/2025 20:36

Yabvu

Toast for me is SAVOURY only.

ACatAsleepInYourHat · 07/08/2025 20:40

Of course it has to be both butter and jam on toast, anything less is pure heresy! Such is my love for jam, I even used to eat the Tesco Value stuff, which was a weird fluorescent red colour not known in nature. Anyone remember it?

Doorstep Tiger bread toasted just under carbonisation point with a thick layer of quality butter and then an equally thick spreading of Bonne Maman Black Cherry conserve is the food of the Gods.

However - and those of you with a nervous disposition may wish to clutch your pearls at this point - toast with Philadelphia (other soft cheeses are available) and jam is equally nice, and may even be better in some respects. There, I've said it. You may present your counter-arguments.

taxidriver · 07/08/2025 20:42

or marmalade, probably marmalade would be wonderful

soupyspoon · 07/08/2025 20:43

I appreciate cream cheese and jam on toast (only if the CC does not have guar gum in it - looking at you Philadelphia)

But I very much prefer, if going down that route, clotted cream and jam on the toast. On top of the butter of course.

Has to be white toast for that one though, none of your wholemeal or sourdough.

AgnesX · 07/08/2025 20:49

Butter and jam if it's tea
Just butter if it's coffee
Not too dark and the crusts must be burnt.
Peanut butter is ok at a push, with banana 🍌

Bettyfromhomeroom · 07/08/2025 20:51

Sorry OP (and everyone else who voted YANBU), you are being unreasonable. Everyone knows tiger bread is for savoury toppings only😂

beeeeeeez · 07/08/2025 20:57

Tiger bread is fabulous, however (and hear me out) Co-op do a seeded sourdough sliced half-loaf thing which has the most perfect texture for toast.
Most store-bought sourdough is only any use for tiling roofs with, or throwing at seagulls. This is dense yet moist, substantial yet yielding (like a good lover - delete which adjectives to suit yourself) and toasts like a dream, if you dream of toast.

I tend to eat it with lightly salted peanut butter and honey and no actual butter, but I concede to being very odd about food.

Or butter AND peanut butter 🤢

Always butter AND peanut butter (wonders why I’m overweight 🤔) or butter and pate and chilli jam/caramelised onion.

Have you tried peanut butter and chilli jam?

Do.

Then report back.

😆 🤣 now pate and chilli jam I can buy into! 😋

FlorenceAndTheSewingMachine · 07/08/2025 21:06

Now I have always been very conservative with my conserves, always a strawberry jam girl, raspberry at a push but while in madeira I did something reckless and tried pumpkin jam and omg it was bloody amazing.

Try this.

Toast, peanut butter. Grated cheese on top, with chilli flakes on top of that. Melted under the grill

Try that!!

NippyNinjaCrab · 07/08/2025 21:18

I can smell that beautiful toasted tiger bread right now!! I love mine with peanut butter and jam on top, or sometimes with peanut butter, a banana and some honey. Bread doesn't agree with my stomach but I bloody love it 😋

Im the same, I cannot really eat bread. I can only tolerate small bits at a time. Massive shame

Rosscameasdoody · 07/08/2025 19:55

My best friend loves the thick crust off a fresh unsliced large whole meal loaf, thickly buttered and spread with salad cream. Not mayo. Has to be salad cream.

christ 😨

BebbanburgIsMine · 07/08/2025 21:33

YABVU

Only because I hate butter, and all things dairy, so just the bread (and I very rarely eat bread) and (preferably) homemade Scottish Raspberry Jam.

Some great suggestions - I’m on MJ thanks to these sort of treats lol but I’ll defo try in small portions.

I did the Atkins years ago and tiger bread in all its iterations was the only carb I missed!

Allthegoodhorses · 07/08/2025 19:23

@BreadInCaptivity not sure if this would be your thing but I got a passionfruit and mango curd in Waitrose the other week and it is absolutely divine on toast!

Sounds divine…thank you. Will put on my shopping list!

Inchworms · 07/08/2025 21:52

Heavily seeded solid brown bread, clover honey, banana slices, cinnamon. If you’re making a day of it, drizzle of Nutella on top

Needacupofteaandcrackers · 07/08/2025 21:59

Nope toasted with thin spread of butter and quality cheddar….. it’s the only acceptable way

SheepBaaBaa · 07/08/2025 22:11

Oo tiger bread is delicious. My preference is lightly toasted with lots of butter. It doesn't need the jam. It is tasty if its added though.

heartsinvisiblefury · 07/08/2025 22:12

Butter and honey on thick white bread - beautiful!
