300 children from Gaza to be brought to the UK for free specialist NHS care

According to the Sunday Times. That's nearly as many beds as there are in Great Ormond Street, where the average waiting time for paediatric surgery is 15 weeks (which is fairly typical nationwide).

Why is it mysteriously possible for government to deliver these showy, headline-grabbing measures (I know we already knew it could happen from COVID policy) but not to just make systems work well in an ordinary way?

I hear you i think we should build more homes.

They are, there is millions of houses being thrown up on every bit of green space, it's still not enough...and they also don't build infrastructure to provide for these new homes, school places doctors etc.
It cannot keep going at the rate is is when it's already not enough

Sweetheart1990 · 03/08/2025 17:18

So what happens the next time something awful like this happens in another country? How many people can you actually give asylum to? It's not an endless pot.

You do know that asylum seekers are a very small portion of overall immigration? And that the UK is signed up to the 1951 refugee convention?

We have to keep trying.

😂 I know that Palestine definitely would not be flying us over there to treat us.

Maybe because Israel bombed their airport in 2002

Clearly you don't understand how the UK functions.

Was there ever a less apt username!

The UK isn't functioning right now, that's the problem. It's a whole mess

Fragmentedbrain · 03/08/2025 17:21

SameOldMe · 03/08/2025 17:15

I'm glad they are getting support and treatment, after what they have been through they deserve this and so much more. All children are deserving of health and treatment. I wouldn't put a life above another's life just because of the lottery of where they are born. Children born here are lucky receive treatment.

And they are having to wait for treatment. Apparently needlessly. That's what this thread is about. Not about cancelling treatment for the Gaza children.

I see a lot of people on this thread still wrongly believe that the taxpayer isn't funding this project. We are. It will be complex, ongoing stuff with accommodation required for a carer and siblings. So what else could be funded? And why isnt the government acting to ameliorate pain among British children?

Funny how everyone who is pro immigration says that, who does have the room then? Where do all these people go? Hotels forever? Because there certainly isn't enough affordable housing.

As of 2021 census, there were 1.5 million VACANT homes in ENGLAND, and another half a million in Wales, N Ireland and Scotland. So over 2 million homes in the UK are sitting empty.

A solution would be stop paying billions to hotels and slum lords building tent cities on old MoD bases and instead pay a fair housing allowance to the British owners of these empty second, third, fourth and other vacant homes on a voluntary basis. With over 2 million homes sitting empty, they could house every British family that is homeless PLUS all asylum seekers/reefugees.

Yes, but that small amount on top of the 100s arriving by boat daily is not manageable

pointythings · 03/08/2025 17:23

Oh, the drama of it all! Hyperbole much?

Edited

That's great, buys it's not going to happen is it, so we are still in the same situation

A child is a child, what ever their nationality or religion. It makes me feel a little bit sick that someone might want to deny help to the suffering children in Gaza.
If you feel so strongly about this @Fragmentedbrainthen I suggest you protest outside Great Ormond Street rather than wondering about why others are not protesting.

Agree wholeheartedly

Millions? Rayner has already met her targets and more? Great news!

Yes of course its taxpayers and i have no issues with that. Id rather pay for an innocent human then the tax dodging millionaires and corrupt government.

Absentmindedsmile · 03/08/2025 17:24

Just wondering if we’ll be able to fly Evyatar David over to hospital for help? He needs it too. He is currently a Hamas hostage of course, but surely Hamas will understand he needs help, and release him. I hear that Hamas themselves have lots of food, from the aid packages.

Well, we do have 14 years of utter shitshow to fix. However, I suspect that this isn't what you mean.

Overall immigration is coming down, it is manageable.

The asylum system needs fixing, I grant you that.

I'm fine - just drove through a fair amount of green space around where I live today with nary a trace of housebuilding, so your 'every bit' is a bit overcooked. Like I said, drama.

Being built, did not say millions of houses are now ready. But it's already been proven that even with the ambitious amount they want to build it's not enough

I really need the laugh emoji back for this. Honestly, some posters on this thread are jumping the shark so hard the poor creature is probably getting dizzy.

But you object to "millions" of new houses being built?

Make your mind up, Sweetheart.

Good for you, up here in the north they don't give a shit about keeping our green space

Notonthestairs · 03/08/2025 17:27

There are no waiting lists for paediatric trauma care. Their treatment will not bump others off the nonexistent list.
