300 children from Gaza to be brought to the UK for free specialist NHS care

1000 replies

Fragmentedbrain · 03/08/2025 01:33

According to the Sunday Times. That's nearly as many beds as there are in Great Ormond Street, where the average waiting time for paediatric surgery is 15 weeks (which is fairly typical nationwide).

Why is it mysteriously possible for government to deliver these showy, headline-grabbing measures (I know we already knew it could happen from COVID policy) but not to just make systems work well in an ordinary way?

The mysterious project pure hope who omit to identify members on their site.

They should surely realise that to relocate patients thousands of miles away for treatment available more locally is not common sense or even in patients best interests travel wise.

It appears to be under the auspices of the UCLH charity.

Funds will be held by UCLH Charity with an agreed management protocol. UCLH Charity will be operating a 100% donation policy - so all funds raised will only be used for the costs associated with the treatment and rehabilitation of the children.

And they’re treating children with specialist care for which children travel from all over the world already. Because it’s not available elsewhere.

And Hamas have made it clear they want to “cleanse” Israel. It’s literally the same narrative both sides. Hamas would not be organising food aid if the tables were turned. The only difference is Israel has funds and political support from the West.

Israel cannot safely exist whilst Hamas is in power. 7th October made that clear. So if Hamas will not back down, and if they continue to keep hostages they took on the 7th, then Israel will keep up the war.

Neither side are innocent here. They’ve been fighting over land for decades. And no civilian should be hungry or at harm.

But it’s important to remember who started this war (Hamas) - how they did it (barbarians) - and what Israel want (their loved ones home and to be able to live without the constant terrorist threat from Hamas).

In war, civilians lose. It’s horrific what the Palestinian children are going through, absolutely unacceptable. But it’s a consequence of war and it’s unfair to expect Israel to end the war without its people
back home. If you’re angry with any side, it should be Hamas who started all of this and are risking their own civilians for an unrealistic demand (a single Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital - that will never happen).

👏👏👏 Very true words.

I mean maybe they are, suspect I would be if I was a Palestinian 17 year old, but that poster took a four and two year old coming to the UK for hospital treatment and went straight to a 17 year old holding Israelis hostage. Hopefully you can see that’s a bit of a leap, given the context of the thread being about sick children

Don't you find this interesting that the first child who arrived for treatment here is a 15yo male? who is very close to official fighting age? not your 4 or 2yo.

pointythings · 04/08/2025 09:57

caringcarer · 04/08/2025 09:27

👏👏👏 Very true words.

The only thing I agree with is that both sides are at fault. Hamas are terrorists - but what are Israel? They allow people from illegal settlements to attack Palestinian villages and beat people up - they stand by and do nothing, and if the Palestinians fight back, they're the ones who are arrested.

For every Israeli killed by Hamas, Israel kills at least ten Palestinians. They're every bit as bad as each other, and I don't understand why people don't see that when it comes to radicalising Palestinians, Israel has done a hell of a lot of that.

BTW I haven't read the whole of the thread since last night, because I don't feel like throwing up my breakfast.

You have read his story, you have seen his injuries and that is the issue you are worried about?

But don't worry, his 2 brothers are still in Gaza

He was amongst three children brought over. A tank bomb exploded close to him whilst he was collecting humanitarian aid shattering his jawbone and his leg.

Tholeonagain · 04/08/2025 10:15

I haven’t read all this thread, some of the anger directed against this relatively small scale humanitarian action in aid of some of the world’s most vulnerable is truly depressing , particularly on a site that’s for mothers. I am glad we are doing this. If there is anger to be directed, direct it at the rich and the powerful who start wars and spend their money on acts of immense personal greed. We are all human and we are all connected. Let us help these children and take some comfort that we are still rooted enough in common humanity to do that.

No, I don't. I've seen that photo. It's the injuries that matter, not the age. Honestly, so many people on this thread need a moral compass transplant.

Well, his facial injuries need very specialised and complex paediatric surgery, which GOSH excels in. So not really. They will never be able to completely understand restore his face, though, from what one surgeon says.

MsJinks · 04/08/2025 10:33

@Clavinova- possibly in 2021 to be fair with personal issues and not being on here much, if at all. However, I definitely saw some debate in MSM, but not this quite extreme hatred and vitriol. I can’t recall seeing much about medivacced Afghan kids though either, and there were some. But these threads generally have recently reached incredibly hateful levels in my opinion - dividing people and building up more and more inhumane thoughts against those ‘we don’t like’. It genuinely worries me for the future.

MyDeftHedgehog · 04/08/2025 10:41

A very emotive subject, I agree we should take some children for trauma surgery, but it must not be at the expense of our own sick children needing treatment x

Steady on now, I've been called a racist with a disgusting world view for voicing a very similar opinion.

marshmallowmix · 04/08/2025 10:52

We are broke, the NHS is on its knees, waiting lists are sky high - this is being paid for by the tax payer as confirmed by Sky and other news outlets... we cannot fix the worlds problems. There are multiple countries much nearer and far richer who could help.

They will bring parents/siblings , claim asylum post treatment and start to bring the rest of their families...it is highly unlikely they will return home.

Home office sources saying it was expected that some would never return home...this is very worrying from a security point of view...

marshmallowmix · 04/08/2025 10:55

If you look at other social media and step away from MN the feeling is that this is madness....Starmer trying to mollify some in his party....

'taxpayer-funded initiative' according to the Guardian;

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2025/aug/03/uk-injured-children-gaza-nhs-care

NHS or foreign aid budget?

Notonthestairs · 04/08/2025 11:15

GOSH has a history of treating children from warzones.
I don't remember the backlash when the UK brought over children from Bosnia and Afghanistan for treatment.

Pp have called those who think patients should carry on being treated in wealthy Arabic nations close to them racist. Just read the thread it's all there.

'If you look at other social media and step away from MN the feeling is that this is madness....Starmer trying to mollify some in his party....'

Exactly there are widespread concerns for this scheme.

It’s 300 kids. Someone did the maths above about the average size Palestinian family: we’re talking about maybe 1,200 people seeking asylum. It’s nothing. These kids are not the problem with the disparity of wealth in the UK or the breaking of the NHS; refusing them treatment or booting them out afterwards wouldn’t solve those problems either.

1200 of refugees in general are nothing in terms of numbers.
Gazans, who start training child soldiers at the age of 12 and teach to hate and kill Jews in primary schools, are significant security concern. See UN links I posted earlier.

Notonthestairs · 04/08/2025 11:35

5000 Palestinian children are being treated in hospitals in Egypt, UAE and Qatar.
We’ve taken 3 and have agreed to take some more. The article says up to 300 - provided the Home Office can get biometric data etc.

Did you complain when Bosnian children were treated by GOSH?

It is a security risk...massively.

Remember the Bibas family, the mother and children kidnapped by Hamas and killed...their coffins were "paraded" in a public spectacle it was horrific....it was like a family day out in Gaza, the Gazans witnessing the handover ....music and flags waving like a jolly....they hate the West. That is not normal ....the level of hatred and scorn on a mother and babies....they are brought up to fight and despise the West and Jews....same with the body of the young girl they spat and jeered...kids too....they see that and follow suit that is the unfortunate environment they have been brought up in....it is ingrained....
