300 children from Gaza to be brought to the UK for free specialist NHS care

Fragmentedbrain · 03/08/2025 01:33

According to the Sunday Times. That's nearly as many beds as there are in Great Ormond Street, where the average waiting time for paediatric surgery is 15 weeks (which is fairly typical nationwide).

Why is it mysteriously possible for government to deliver these showy, headline-grabbing measures (I know we already knew it could happen from COVID policy) but not to just make systems work well in an ordinary way?

I’ll just post this again, shall I? Since so many of you seem to have missed it.

From Project Pure Hope:
We intend to return the children to a place of physical and psychological safety where they can continue their rehabilitation (likely within the wider Middle East / GCC region which will be established on a case by case basis, and planned for as part of the assessment and triage process). Transfer and return of children after treatment will adhere to UN guidelines, domestic and international law.Our partner NGO (PCRF) has successfully repatriated children they took to the US, by arranging accommodation in Egypt before taking them to the US, so they had a place to return to. We are taking a similar approach with PCRF for our project. We are also working with the UN Refugee Agency to ensure that we adhere to international law and that children are repatriated according to their recommendations.

Pp have called those who think patients should carry on being treated in wealthy Arabic nations close to them racist. Just read the thread it's all there.

'If you look at other social media and step away from MN the feeling is that this is madness....Starmer trying to mollify some in his party....'

Exactly there are widespread concerns for this scheme.

But there is indeed some racism on this thread in respect of the Gazan children. Why do you think some posts have been deleted?

Rather than being outraged at the government funding (or maybe not) kids from Gaza coming for treatment be outraged that the government is complicit in their starvation and injuries by funding spy planes, personnel and whatever else to the Israelis.

The bigger issues are relevant. The other nations not supporting people on their doorstep, what our Government may be complicit in.

There's no answer to the greater issues from where I stand.

I try not get distracted. Yet this is distracting. The public require total transparency yet we are lied to continually.

I feel uneasy thinking about this. I'm a regular NHS user, multiple hospital appointments, in for long periods with serious acute and chronic health issues. It is very substandard in many ways ATM, not compared to Gaza obviously. It is however substandard and it shouldn't be. A night in A and E is enough I believe for many to stay home and die. There will be a knock on effect to this - staffing, capacity, family, housing.

How does one compel neighbouring countries to do anything to help their neighbours?

I can't answer the questions. I'm not saying I'd deny the above either. These are honest selfish reflections from someone at the mercy of a system that's already shit for a so called wealthy Western nation.

These 300 and their parents/siblings are outside of Project Hope.

Also try to read what you're posting - "We intend to", not "we will"

To think it's outrageous that we can pay for 300 Gazan kids (it is the NHS paying for this - the philanthropic stuff is separate) but not British kids? The paediatric pain management services in NHS England has a waiting time of c17 weeks.

This isn't about not treating kids from Gaza (although I knew some people would choose to read it that way). It's about the political choice to make children in the UK wait months to have essential surgery or pain treatment. Why is nobody protesting about that?

It does look that way... children from other countries have come over before as well .. did you post then ?

No I find it great cos I’m not sick in the head

As the mother of a 16 year old boy, and also a human being in possession of a modest degree of empathy, I am delighted that this young lad, who was presumably selected because of his need for highly specialised treatment, is being helped

5000 Palestinian children are being treated in hospitals in Egypt, UAE and Qatar.
We’ve taken 3 and have agreed to take some more. The article says up to 300 - provided the Home Office can get biometric data etc.

Did you complain when Bosnian children were treated by GOSH?

Exactly thousands are being treated nearby, 300 more will not make difference to wealthy nations with masses of resources and specialities. I used to work in a specialist hospital in the ME and patients were transferred in from all over the region. They have the funds and facilities, we do not.

This is a virtue signalling project for project pure hope and starmer keen to please some is going along with it.

marshmallowmix · 04/08/2025 11:52

For the hundredth time this is not private funding it is being done on the NHS and tax payer funded....

It is a foregone conclusion they will stay ...word salad "we intend to" all smoke and mirrors once family and siblings here that is it....and then the extended family will follow

It isn't racism. For the trillionth time many would object if hundreds were being shipped in from any far flung destination.

UK healthcare should be for UK residents.

DuncinToffee · 04/08/2025 11:53

It's gone from concerns about the NHS to these children are radicalised child soldiers Hmm

Italy has been treating children from Gaza since 2024, I am sure they would have flagged it if that was true.

Have you actually read all the posts on this thread?

But if you want to deny the racism, that's your perogative.

But you don't apply that rule to other countries, especially those in the ME

Why one rule for the UK and another rule for the RoW?

Yes. Again if hundreds were being sent from Aus I'd said the say the same, oh but racism is such a weak argument. Our nhs cannot cope with more, Middle Eastern health providers can.

Marylou2 · 04/08/2025 11:59

it's completely unacceptable. The NHS is struggling anyway and we absolutely cannot afford to bring in more patients from abroad. Sorry to be harsh but there are wealthy middle Eastern countries that have the cash and capacity to do this. it's also about time the NHS demanded proof of eligibility for treatment from every patient they see. Please don't bother telling me that this is the case as I know it isn't.

marshmallowmix · 04/08/2025 11:59

@DuncinToffee the NHS is crumbling fact, we recently had a stint in A&E it was horrendous a 14 hour wait it was appalling....the security risk is a huge concern....one concern doesn't negate the other....both exist...you can have more than one concern you can have multiple 🙄 ....surprise, surprise...

I do have the links. I posted them at least five time of this thread. With direct quotations saying that private funding (your project hope) goes in parallel.

You're either unable to comprehend or chose to ignore so I won't bother reposting again.

Exactly this. One patient plus several family members. it won't just be treatment, it'll be housing, education and a lifetime of benefits. Once they're here they'll never go back.

Especially if it’s Palestinians eh?

The Ukrainians, white, the children from gazza, varying shades of white to brown. Which country with black children do we swoop in and help? If you want to shout racism.

It's up to 300 children, they are security checked before coming here. If you just don't want children from Gaza coming here, say so.
