To Be Annoyed at Sainsbury’s

Tried to place an online order from Sainsbury’s for Friday and tried to add 1lt of gin to the order. I tried to place the order for delivery between 10am and 11am as I live in Scotland. A message came up saying I would need to change my delivery slot as they cannot deliver alcohol in Scotland before 10am but as far as I was aware 10am-11am was not before 10am. I have now booked it for 11am-12pm. I have work on Friday which means leaving the house at 12.20pm so now I can only hope they deliver on time as half the time they are late. I get paid on Friday hence getting the shopping delivered then.

Couldn’t you just remove the gin from the order and get it in a shop on your way back from work / another day?

Rhodora · 23/07/2025 15:31

Unfortunately alcohol cannot be bought after 10pm either and I finish work late on Friday. I have now asked DH for £10 so I can get the shopping delivered tomorrow instead as I can just cover it without the £10 but that will cover me incase they can’t deliver something and swap it for a more expensive product. Still annoyed though that 10am-11am is before 10 in the morning.

Was the gin essential?

UsingAMansNameInAWomensWorld · 23/07/2025 15:39

It'll be in case the order comes early/the system will read 10:00am ad not AFTER 10:00am

What has £10 got to do with anything? And can't your DH just pick up the gin?

SusanChurchouse · 23/07/2025 15:40

This has always confused me about Sainsbury’s delivery as I have come up against the 10am cut off. I wonder if it’s to cover themselves if they happen to be a few minutes early, or it’s a technicality. In saying that, I use them every week and they are always on time. Though that might be because I live 10 minutes from the store.

Needmorelego · 23/07/2025 15:43

Is the gin really that important.
If you can't manage without it then you've got a problem.

BashfulClam · 23/07/2025 15:43

It’s because they run your order through the till when it’s picked and send you a receipt. Legally they cannot put alcohol through the till at that time as it counts as a sale which is illegal. Blame the daft law.

PinkyFlamingo · 23/07/2025 15:48

Yes they should have delivered it as it was 10am the slot started. Must be a glitch.

Morgenrot25 · 23/07/2025 15:48

If you are to receive it between 10 and 11 then it will quite possibly be processed before 10am, thus the gin cannot be included. I don't see how you can be annoyed at a shop for following legal guidelines tbh.

Rude and unnecessary

They can’t as they run the sale when it’s picked (that’s why you get your receipt a few hours before) they cannot add alcohol to the sake as it occurs pre 10am and they have then broken the law by making an alcohol sale pre 10am. I think the tills won’t even let it go through.

No glitch. The shopping is picked, processed and checked out before 10am.

TheodoraCrumpet · 23/07/2025 15:56

If she couldn't manage without the gin, she would probably be more on top of maintaining a decent supply. Why shouldn't she look forward to a drink at the weekend? I look forward to my weekly treat of a couple of glasses of wine on a Friday night, and would be annoyed if the system, not the law, was denying me the chance to get it at my convenience.

Fragmentedbrain · 23/07/2025 15:58

Mmm gin. God I hate pleasure ruiners.

I detest gin these days, but don't begrudge anyone who enjoys it. Unfortunately Sainsbobs aren't doing anything wrong by not including it on a 10am to 11am slot, as it will likely be processed before the allowed selling time of 10am.

Skybluepinky · 23/07/2025 16:04

Do you think they should change their rules for u!

Rude and unnecessary

Apologies if you think that.
It's annoying - but not exactly important.
Iceland delivered me the wrong flavour crisps once. Annoying to me but I didn't start a thread on Mumsnet about it because it was just crisps.
I like crisps - but I don't NEED crisps.

Tillow4ever · 23/07/2025 16:08

Could you have stuck with the earlier slot, cancel the gin, then buy a bottle on your way to work after the delivery? I know that’s a hassle.

Have you looked on Amazon? Sometimes bottles of alcohol are cheaper on there, so you could buy it that way if you want it delivering?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 23/07/2025 16:17

I had this with an Asda order which was a later (lunchtime) slot, so well after legal selling time, but had been picked early and they couldn’t “sell” wine. It was annoying as I had friends coming round that night, but there was plenty of time to go to the shop so all okay in the end.

At the time I lived alone in a flat, with no car, so online deliveries for bulky stuff were my norm.

Its this - In order for them to deliver at 10am,, the transaction is done earlier in the day and they cant add Gin to it - Simples

Postre · 23/07/2025 16:37

It's not the company, it's the law. Just get it when it's legally allowed.

Happhappyhappy · 23/07/2025 16:42

If they substitute with a more expensive product they don’t charge you the extra FYI

(Misses the point of the thread)

Musicaltheatremum · 23/07/2025 16:49

Yes the 10-11 slot always excluded alcohol as they have to run everything through the till before 10am to start the deliveries from 10am.
I used to do click and collect 10-11 and it was always late coming to the collection area because it couldn't physically go through the till before this. It's the Scottish licensing rules so not a lot you can do

If they sub a product for something that costs more, you dont pay extra it'll still be original cost

I hardly think it’s an issue though, I mean it’s irritating to get a delivery and have to go to the shop as well.

Its a silly rule OP.
