To Be Annoyed at Sainsbury’s

Rhodora · 23/07/2025 13:56

Tried to place an online order from Sainsbury’s for Friday and tried to add 1lt of gin to the order. I tried to place the order for delivery between 10am and 11am as I live in Scotland. A message came up saying I would need to change my delivery slot as they cannot deliver alcohol in Scotland before 10am but as far as I was aware 10am-11am was not before 10am. I have now booked it for 11am-12pm. I have work on Friday which means leaving the house at 12.20pm so now I can only hope they deliver on time as half the time they are late. I get paid on Friday hence getting the shopping delivered then.

OP posts:

It would make no difference. It's perfectly legal to pick alcohol at any time of day, as long as the person doesn't receive their order outwith the hours of 10am and 10pm.

There are plenty of people confidently stating the opposite on the thread, so if they are correct it would make a difference. If you are correct, which seems more reasonable, it doesn't explain why OP's 10am delivery is affected.

I used to work for Tesco Click and Collect in Scotland. I have picked alcohol at 6am in the run up to Christmas. And at the weekend it was very common to have collections including alcohol at 10am - obviously the order had to be ready before then.

tilypu · 23/07/2025 18:18

I suspect a previous poster is correct - Sainsbury are being cautious to make sure alcohol isn't being delivered early i.e. the delivery driver doesn't arrive before 10am.

Is the gin really that important.
If you can't manage without it then you've got a problem.

Oh, for God's sake...

Needmorelego · 23/07/2025 18:58

@LadyMonicaBaddingham @Boredlass "ffs" what?
It's annoying but it's not an essential.
As I said upthread I once got the wrong flavour crisps delivered. Annoying but I can survive without crisps.
Last week I was substituted a shampoo with a fragrance I don't really like. But it's still shampoo so I just used it - my hair is clean.
So she can't get any gin....oh well. It's not an essential... it's a want. There's lots of things I want but can't get.

But OP hadn’t said she can’t live without the gin, but it’s part of her shop, she’ll get no gin if she doesn’t move her shopping.

You got a substitute, she’ll get nothing.

now clearly you’ve got an issue with people drinking, which is skewing your view, but change it for you can’t have any crisps, which are your weekend treat ;like gin maybe OPS), and it’s irritating. Not the end of the world, but most posts are not the end of the world, but irritating all the same.

LlynTegid · 23/07/2025 19:29

First World Problem.

Sainsbury's also deliver at weekends, is your cupboard that bare that you or another family member cannot rustle up a meal on Friday evening.

OonaStubbs · 23/07/2025 19:32

Supermarkets should not be allowed to sell alcohol at all, this would solve all these problems.

Pinty · 23/07/2025 19:33

Is there a price difference for delivery at the weekend? OP has a tight budget.

She may of course also have plans for the weekend and it’s not just food you order with Sainsbury’s is it?

Maybe she’s run out of washing tablets and wants them to get washing done first thing Saturday?

Also, maybe there are no weekend slots left?

Needmorelego · 23/07/2025 19:39

@BlankBlankBlank14 I don't care if people want to drink alcohol (unless it causes an effect that can cause issues to someone else).
Their money...their choice.
I just don't understand the problem. The OP just needs to choose a different time slot for her delivery next time or pop into the 101 other retailers she could buy some gin from.
Annoying for this delivery but not exactly a big deal is it?

No, not at all!

it wax your very snarky (which a number of posters have pointed out) if you can’t live without gin you’ve got a problem?

Just how did you jump to that by an innocuous post.

I’m not the only one to point out your comment?

BTW, I reckon 90% of posts on MN are “not a big deal”. but you’ve posted a lot on this “not a big deal one!”

Needmorelego · 23/07/2025 19:49

@BlankBlankBlank14 I mean it's a pain in the arse for the OP.
She either has to not have the gin or change the delivery time.
Annoying....but lots of things in the world are annoying.
But as much as it might be her most favourite thing in the world it's not essential to have - unless she is actually an alcoholic when it could cause an effect on her health if she doesn't have some.
A person can live without gin. If they can't....then something is wrong.
If I was the OP I would have muttered "oh ffs" to myself and just changed the delivery.

But why was that your first single line response? It’s odd and has been pointed out by many, who you’ve challenged.

OP never said tfe gin was essential, she said it was a PITA, that to get her non essential gin, she had to change her slot!

Well clearly you are perfect, would’ve just muttered FFS and changed your slot, OP did that but thought she’d just have a little rant about the “rule” and why she thought it ridiculous.

Now go have a gin and packet of crisps (whatever the flavour) both not essential, but never the less pleasant and calm down.

It’s just a MN post! It’s not meant to be an alcohol shaming topic.

Needmorelego · 23/07/2025 20:05

@BlankBlankBlank14 apologies (to you and @Rhodora ) if you think my comment was an alcohol shaming one.
I didn't mean it to be and it wasn't my intention.
I can't explain it very well but I just don't understand alcohol and get very baffled when people complain that a wedding or a dinner party is "dry". I always just think "oh so they couldn't have a beer or glass of wine - so what?" and don't understand the complaints or fuss.
Apologies again to you @Rhodora if I offended you in any way.

Yes it’s clearly true you don’t understand alcohol, so probably best not to make such snarky comments about it then?

The OP did nothing wrong at all!

if purely the mention of alcohol triggers you to be snarky, then step away from the thread.

I never said the OP had done wrong and actually she hasn't said anything in response to my first comment.
It's others on this thread who seem to be offended.
Alcohol doesn't trigger me 😂
I just really don't care about it.
I could step away from the thread....or I could start a list of things about Sainsbury's that annoy me.
But I expect some on this thread would find my annoyances something they think is "no big deal" and say something like "is that all you have to worry about" or "first world problem" etc etc.

Well, we are in the first world.

I'm sure if there are some second or third world problems you'd like to discuss, you could start your own thread.

Do Sainsbury's put their online orders through a till? That seems very unlikely. It would take way too much time.

Tesco's system is automated so that once all the items are picked, the payment is taken. It doesn't matter what time that happens, as the point of contact with the customer is the time that matters.

I worked for Tesco dot-com. Our orders could be picked well before ten, as long as they were not collected or delivered before ten.

OonaStubbs · 23/07/2025 21:00

Gin is known as "mother's ruin" so Mumsnet should be anti-gin IMO.
