To Be Annoyed at Sainsbury’s

Tried to place an online order from Sainsbury’s for Friday and tried to add 1lt of gin to the order. I tried to place the order for delivery between 10am and 11am as I live in Scotland. A message came up saying I would need to change my delivery slot as they cannot deliver alcohol in Scotland before 10am but as far as I was aware 10am-11am was not before 10am. I have now booked it for 11am-12pm. I have work on Friday which means leaving the house at 12.20pm so now I can only hope they deliver on time as half the time they are late. I get paid on Friday hence getting the shopping delivered then.

it’s the law. They can’t bend it for anyone’s convenience

I bought cocktail liquid sugar from the alcohol aisle in Asda and had to get it verified at the till that I was over the age to buy alcohol.

I pointed out it was sugar. The contents are water and sugar. No alcohol. But they said it was listed as alcohol so needed verified. I thought then it was as well it was in the afternoon as I’d have been refused had it been before the curfew stopped at 11am or whatever it is nowadays.

EVHead · 23/07/2025 16:55

Has anyone seen any research into the effects of the change to licensing times in Scotland? Have there been any positive effects on alcohol consumption/alcohol-related health problems?

Some of the drinks which are marketed as 'alcohol free' also set off the 'check 25' thing on the till.

Sainsbury’s charge you the extra at the time if they sub it and then send you a voucher for the extra charged after the fact that you can take off your next shop. It doesn’t help at the time though if you don’t have the extra in your account at the time they take the money.

If you are to receive it between 10 and 11 then it will quite possibly be processed before 10am, thus the gin cannot be included. I don't see how you can be annoyed at a shop for following legal guidelines tbh.

This, they won't be able 'pick it' from the shelves before 10.

I detest gin these days, but don't begrudge anyone who enjoys it. Unfortunately Sainsbobs aren't doing anything wrong by not including it on a 10am to 11am slot, as it will likely be processed before the allowed selling time of 10am.

The law prohibits sales, not processing. The sale isn't complete until the product arrives at the customer's door.

Is this a joke post 😆

The sale is when it goes through the tills...

Isn't the sale complete once the transaction has been processed?

It does not appear to made a huge difference though I don’t work in substance abuse so can’t answer for the big picture. In my local Morrison’s more than once I’ve seen a couple of regulars being refused alcohol due to barely being able to stand in the middle of the afternoon.

I would be interested to see the legislation for that if you can point me in the right direction?

Richiewoo · 23/07/2025 17:50

Fuck me first world problems.

tilypu · 23/07/2025 17:55

It's not the law though. And deliveries will have been processed more than an hour before the delivery slot in most cases!

Tesco can do deliveries and collections of alcohol between 10 and 11. I'm not sure about other supermarkets. Maybe change where you shop?

Because you only have 12 hours per day that you can buy off-licence alcohol?

That's a tad concerning!

Was the gin essential?

What a question 🤣

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 23/07/2025 18:04

Never had this problem with Tescos. They will deliver alcohol in a 10am slot.

PerfectTuesday · 23/07/2025 18:06

Perhaps they're on GMT.

SupposesRoses · 23/07/2025 18:07

I wonder why they don't just pick the orders with alcohol the day before.

Yes I have read the research into it.

At first glance it does look like there has been a statistically significant drop in problem drinking behaviour, but when you compare the data to England (which does not have minimum alcohol pricing & some other restrictions like in OP) the statistics are similar. So overall problem drinking has dropped by the same amount in England & Scotland.

There are different ways of interpreting the data, Scotland has a higher rate of problem drinking to begin with for example, but it doesn't look like the measures brought in in Scotland have had any difference.

Edited

It would make no difference. It's perfectly legal to pick alcohol at any time of day, as long as the person doesn't receive their order outwith the hours of 10am and 10pm.

Honestly, there's still 12 hours every day we can buy alcohol - it's a minor inconvenience to live in the best country in the world.

Indeed! And I'll take our ability to be able to do my shopping on a Sunday evening over the ability to buy wine at 9am!

bellamorgan · 23/07/2025 18:12

What is the deal with Scotland and booze was is the drinking culture really that bad? I’ve keep reading on things like 2-1 cocktails excluding Scotland and such.
