To Be Annoyed at Sainsbury’s

Rhodora · 23/07/2025 13:56

Tried to place an online order from Sainsbury’s for Friday and tried to add 1lt of gin to the order. I tried to place the order for delivery between 10am and 11am as I live in Scotland. A message came up saying I would need to change my delivery slot as they cannot deliver alcohol in Scotland before 10am but as far as I was aware 10am-11am was not before 10am. I have now booked it for 11am-12pm. I have work on Friday which means leaving the house at 12.20pm so now I can only hope they deliver on time as half the time they are late. I get paid on Friday hence getting the shopping delivered then.

Legal laws and licences can vary

A licence can restrict more than the law can for example.

Yup. I'm aware.

But the warning on the Sainsbury's page says

"Scottish alcohol legislation
Due to Scottish licensing legislation, online grocery orders containing alcohol can only be delivered after 10am."

Which is exactly what I have said on this page.

Same here in Ireland - you cant purchase alcohol till 10:30am on Monday to Saturday and 12:30pm on Sundays. the one on Sunday drives me wrong as if you are going to someone's for dinner cant stop on the way to get a bottle of wine. They also have the alcohol section corned off with flappy doors to go in and out

CalicoPusscat · 24/07/2025 14:40

I was annoyed with Sainsbury's myself a fortnight ago when I discovered they don't give nectar points for wine.

I've got used to the little chinkle when it adds your points and lets you play for more.

It does sound annoying OP, guess you'll have to plan around this in future.

For those querying. I can’t drive and DH is in Milton Keynes until Friday. I am working Friday, Saturday and Sunday and spending time with my stepchildren on Saturday and Sunday. My annoyance is down to like most of us trying to fit the shopping in around life. I am not glued to the gin bottle, I do not need it to get through the day.

So why on earth would you risk being late to work for gin?

BoredZelda · 24/07/2025 14:50

22O725 · 23/07/2025 15:54

No glitch. The shopping is picked, processed and checked out before 10am.

They do it overnight at my local Tesco for all deliveries. So it can’t be that.

No it was Taste the Difference. 🤣🤣

Brilliant comeback! And, ffs my FFS comment earlier aimed squarely at the pleasure-sponges that were making the disingenuous and MN-predictable remarks about needing help with alcohol because one has more than a vague sniff in the direction of a small sherry once a decade...

Needmorelego · 24/07/2025 15:52

@LadyMonicaBaddingham if that was being snidey towards me....
I APOLOGISED to the OP for my comment.
Is that ok with you?
(Do people still drink sherry? Many a good trifle has been ruined by sherry 😂)

Mausbajiiw · 24/07/2025 18:04

The online order payments are processed through the till system but the shop isn’t scanned at the till

WhatcakeshalIIbaketoday · 24/07/2025 18:34

I don’t shop this way but wouldn’t other supermarkets have this rule too?

Maybe in some supermarkets (maybe in Sainsbury's) certainly not in all. There are times where that could have been really useful!

Agua2025 · 24/07/2025 21:31

I want to empathise because I love gin but this scenario just seems so alien to me to get upset about.

However, thanks for the heads up because I am going to Scotland for a week in an AirBNB in August and after the activities my DC have planned I will need a gin so I will make sure to take my own in the car 😂

Not sure, but OP is in Scotland where apparently serving is between 10am and 10pm. Although I believe they have normal opening hours on Sundays!

I posted upthread that I was put out that I didn't get nectar points for wine. Yesterday I didn't get nectar points for a small yogurt so you must have to spend over £1.

I'm buying peaches today in my scintillating life so I WILL get some points!

VayCay · 25/07/2025 07:07

Unfortunately alcohol cannot be bought after 10pm either and I finish work late on Friday. I have now asked DH for £10 so I can get the shopping delivered tomorrow instead as I can just cover it without the £10 but that will cover me incase they can’t deliver something and swap it for a more expensive product. Still annoyed though that 10am-11am is before 10 in the morning.

This being mumsnet I'm amazed no one has quoted this so I'll go. Why are you having to ask your husband for money to get the shopping a day earlier? What's going on there.

sashh · 25/07/2025 08:07

nomas · 24/07/2025 14:43

Because she is working all the weekend and looking after her step children, I'd probably need a gin.

I use Sainsbury's and have an early morning delivery (not in Scotland) but they often arrive 10 - 15 mins early.

They used to phone me but I think all the drivers know by now they can always turn up early.

Venalopolos · 25/07/2025 08:13

Fragmentedbrain · 23/07/2025 17:17

The law prohibits sales, not processing. The sale isn't complete until the product arrives at the customer's door.

Are you sure? When I buy online, the T&C often say the sale is either when they take my money or when the goods leave the warehouse. Having a sale legally complete on delivery of the goods is peculiar.

cliffdiver · 25/07/2025 08:19

Happhappyhappy · 23/07/2025 16:42

If they substitute with a more expensive product they don’t charge you the extra FYI

(Misses the point of the thread)

Actually Sainsbury’s do, and then reimburse you with a voucher for the difference.

So if I ordered a £9 bottle of wine and Sainsbury's subbed a £14 bottle of wine, I would pay £14 and then a £5 voucher would show on my account after a couple of days.

HopingForTheBest25 · 25/07/2025 09:15

It's absolutely bonkers that countries try to control an adult's right to buy a perfectly legal item with these ridiculous rules. An alcoholic will remain an alcoholic, regardless of whether or not the supermarket can sell them booze before 10am!

I didn’t get paid until today and had enough left in my bank account yesterday to pay for the shopping but not for the shopping if anything got subbed. We don’t have any joint bank accounts but if either of us is finding it tight just before payday we just ask. We don’t always get paid around the same time as DH gets paid monthly and I get paid every four weeks. This month I had two birthdays and a lunch with friends which is why my account was a little lighter than usual at the end of the month.

Was the gin essential?

Is it 2020?

Rhodora · 25/07/2025 10:53

The gin was not essential but was wanted. As I’m working late and DH doesn’t get in till late after travelling up today we will enjoy a couple of gins tonight and have a proper catch up on how each other’s week has gone while our naan bread pizza is in the oven. Some adults can drink without getting drunk.

Enjoy OP, in fact have one for me! I’m currently not drinking as I’m having chemo.. nothing since 1st April!

I’m looking forward to having a couple when I’m finished.

Not essential, not got any alcohol issues, but enjoy a couple of gins/wine.

Have a great weekend!

So on that basis, would you think people can only buy their supermarket shop between 10am and 10pm in Scotland if they are buying alcohol? Because that's certainly not the case!

No, I think it’s when the sale is processed through the till, when the delivery is picked and leaves the supermarket or warehouse.

Jennps · 25/07/2025 12:23

Needmorelego · 23/07/2025 16:04

Apologies if you think that.
It's annoying - but not exactly important.
Iceland delivered me the wrong flavour crisps once. Annoying to me but I didn't start a thread on Mumsnet about it because it was just crisps.
I like crisps - but I don't NEED crisps.

It’s not that important that you have to comment on this thread despite your opposition to OP. Year you still commented and came back again.

Do you only engage in activity in life that you consider to be earth shatteringly important?

Jennps · 25/07/2025 12:24

TY78910 · 23/07/2025 15:15

Couldn’t you just remove the gin from the order and get it in a shop on your way back from work / another day?

D’uh, why didn’t the OP think of that?

I mean why go shopping and actually, you know, buy anything.
