To think the BMA have misjudged with another doctor's strike? Thread 2

Rolling this over as people still seem to have something to say but no new poll.

Original post

AIBU to think the BMA have misjudged with another doctor's strike?

Last year they got more than anyone else in the NHS along with an improved deal. Nurses and other AHPs received lower rises.

BMA have just announced another 'resident' doctor strike continuing to chase pay restoration to 2008 levels.

Having just had the major win with changes to IMG prioritisation and the clamp-down on PAs it feels a bit tone-deaf and I can't see Streeting going for it.

Data, please

PurpleFairyLights · 24/08/2025 18:28

@mumsneedwine night shift.

mumsneedwine · 24/08/2025 18:41

@PurpleFairyLights indeed. The figures for this years recruitment round will be out in October, and I've been told they are horrific.

@poetryandwine it's a lot more than 15% of F2s leaving. BMA estimated nearer 33% this year due to it being emigrate or unemployment. Again, exact figures will be known soon after the survey of F2s is complete.

poetryandwine · 24/08/2025 18:48

Then we need to wait on the data.

Is the 2022 and 2023 not a good place to start ? It shows the trend was already going upwards before the ridiculous amount of applicants this year. 2025 has seen 30,000 IMG applicants. This is not sustainable !

@mumsneedwine night shift.

To be fair, not all of us have the entire day to be on MN like you and mumsneedwine.

What a strange thing to say (no surprise there). My first post was at 1750 when on way back from a lovely day with friends.

You don't understand what I mean by nightshift.

Ok. I’ll assume it’s as singular a use of an ordinary term as was your use of ‘dark humour’. Fair enough. Most people use language to communicate effectively but each to their own.

Absolutely it is a disgrace that this was not monitored before. A list of names of who was responsible for this needs to be made public.

Sevillian · 24/08/2025 20:25

Hopefully it will flush out the weaker graduates though.

Sevillian · 24/08/2025 20:26

Then they can look for alternative careers just like the excess law graduates have to do.

Sevillian · 24/08/2025 20:26

So there will be some fans, tbh.

We do not need an influx of IMGs to do this. Unless you are saying that IMGs are better doctors than UK doctors?

Of course IMGs may look better on paper as they have been doctors for a lot longer. Not a fair competition.

So @Sevillian which country has the best medical schools and produces the best doctors?

Sevillian · 24/08/2025 21:23

Why do all international graduates have to lose the opportunity to work in the UK just so that your DS can get a training post?

Greater good and all that.

Sevillian · 24/08/2025 21:33

We’re back to the start. The greater good really should feature somewhere. These threads are overwhelmingly dominated by the strong mothers who are very definitely not thinking of the greater good but only of their individual DC.

Well mumsneedwine's DD is already on a training path so I don't think that comment is very accurate.

stuffedpeppers · 24/08/2025 21:50

The BMAs own survey of F2s showed that 50% of those who replied did not bother to apply for a job - if you do not apply then yes someone else will get that job - img or lmg

Why should the UK not protect its own medical graduates like 195 other countries do?

Source?

But 12,000 UKMGs did apply for specialty training in 2025 along with around 22,000 IMGs = 33000 for 12000 posts.

Also you have still not told us who called you a "liar". Hint the post does not exist.

PurpleFairyLights · 24/08/2025 22:07

@Sevillian you have still not answered my question. What other country does not protect its own medical graduates?

Why is a huge influx of IMGs applying for training posts the greater good?

Who will be benefiting exactly?

After the allegations about a poster sending PMs to ascertain that poster’s identity in rl (disproved by MNHQ), it’s entirely fair to question what is true and what is not. That’s how it would work in a court.

PurpleFairyLights · 24/08/2025 22:07

@Sevillian you have still not answered my question. What other country does not protect its own medical graduates?

That question doesn’t follow logically from anything that I’ve said, so I assume that you’re misdirecting the question.
