To think the BMA have misjudged with another doctor's strike? Thread 2

Rolling this over as people still seem to have something to say but no new poll.

Original post

AIBU to think the BMA have misjudged with another doctor's strike?

Last year they got more than anyone else in the NHS along with an improved deal. Nurses and other AHPs received lower rises.

BMA have just announced another 'resident' doctor strike continuing to chase pay restoration to 2008 levels.

Having just had the major win with changes to IMG prioritisation and the clamp-down on PAs it feels a bit tone-deaf and I can't see Streeting going for it.

@ShellacofChopin the only Unis that take Bs are for contextual (except Brunel). I've offered to send the details for all Unis but they don't seem interested in actual facts.

TheFancyDuck · 08/08/2025 21:41

Well mumsneedwine there is evidence (in a paper quoted upthread that I really can't be bothered to find for you, but possibly authored by MacMillan?) that students from post 2000 medical schools do worse in all Royal College exams even after taking into account their lower prior attainment.

Where did you find the statistic that graduates of UEA had the highest scores in Royal College exams? I can't find it. Are you perhaps confusing it with the fact that UEA has the highest percentage of students in graduate employment, but that is not only looking at ex medical students

mumsneedwine · 08/08/2025 21:42

Not sure if this will be clear enough to read. Few allow a B if have A/A star in EPQ. Still need to get high enough UCAT to get an interview.

@TheFancyDuck it's a BMA report (just about to leave work but will try and find it again over weekend). The report says they do worst in RCS exams, not all RC exams. If students from any Uni are consistently struggling with exams then the GMC should have stepped in by now ? And if not, why not ?

TheFancyDuck · 08/08/2025 21:54

In the paper I have referred to it's all Royal College exams. I have no idea why the GMC haven't intervened, how would I know that?

And your UEA statistic?

mumsneedwine · 08/08/2025 22:06

@TheFancyDuck I read RCS but will check. I asked why GMC hasn't intervened as it would seem negligent of them not too and as you seem to have lots of details thought you might know why they haven't.

As I said, I'm still at work and would like to get home but will post the report when I get 5 minutes. Unfortunately MN doesn't pay my bills.

mumsneedwine · 08/08/2025 22:21

And after the fiasco of RCP this year I'd not take any report on exam reaults seriously. Take the exam 18 months ago, be told you've passed/failed, and then, oh whoops, we got it wrong. Sorry.

ShellacofChopin · 08/08/2025 21:30

@Mumsneedwine and who are these medical schools that make offers of Bs that Sevillian was referring to but either didn't know or wasn't forthcoming about which ones she was talking about? I had a quick look at the websites of some of the newer ones but any mention of Bs seemed to be only in a contextual context, which she claimed was not what she was talking about.

Struggling to see where I referred to specific grades.

I'm probably better informed than mumsneedwine in terms of university access but that aside, if she thinks that I'd be prepared to give her my email address then that's excessively wishful thinking on her part.

Sevillian · 08/08/2025 22:28

Sorry mumsneedwine - not in a million years.

It's pretty easy to work out which grades you are talking about. If a standard UK medical offer is A A A and you are saying "In terms of middling A levels from a leafy comp I'm talking about the grades which a number of the least competitive UK medical schools accept. I'm not talking about contextual allowances at all." it has to be Bs you must be talking about. Unless you think some are accepting Cs?

Sevillian · 08/08/2025 22:46

I think that you may lack analytical skills ShellacofChopin. And please at least quote what I've said correctly. As I said, I never referred to Bs. You wrongly claimed that I did - very different.

mumsneedwine · 08/08/2025 22:49

@Sevillian sorry but did we meet in Glasgow ? Or Birmingham ? WP days are so informative, full of lovely consultants and Admissions staff.
At work today discussing WP selection for 2026. Long day. Are you in the pub ?

mumsneedwine · 08/08/2025 22:50

ooh the insults are back @ShellacofChopin. It's the only way certain people know how to respond to criticism 🤷‍♀️

mumsneedwine · 08/08/2025 22:54

I send my spreadsheet to hundreds of people every year. It's used in many admission conferences and I've been told I could earn money from it. Answer is no, because I do it to help others. A concept beyond some people on here, they just like to insult and belittle others. Weird.
Happy to distribute to anyone who wants it.

I don't think our paths did cross mumsneedwine, if indeed you were there. If you recall, I had to tell you about the conference at least twice before you twigged. I'm sure you would be recognisable.

I would say that correcting a poster who has wrongly attributed something or has misinterpreted is very reasonable mumsneedwine.

Try not to revert to being childish whenever someone posts something that you don't like.

mumsneedwine · 08/08/2025 23:05

@Sevillian 😂😂😂😂 I had a fab time in Glasgow. Amazingly supportive people. No one had a disparaging word about any Uni so surprised you were there and didn't speak up ?

But why do people need to give you their personal information? Why not just create a link?

Also, this spreadsheet is a purely mechanical exercise. It's not in the least marketable,

mumsneedwine · 08/08/2025 23:06

And I'm v recognisable in WP. Just ask as most people know who I am on here. I have nothing to hide 🤷‍♀️

I'm delighted you made it mumsneedwine, since you so nearly didn't.

mumsneedwine · 08/08/2025 23:08

@Sevillian ah sweetie, I use a generic email. V easy to do. Would you like a copy ? It's completely free. Or do you have a better version as a WP/admissions expert ?

mumsneedwine · 08/08/2025 23:09

@Sevillian ??? Why did I not nearly make it ? As I have a list of delegates I'm now curious which one was you. As no one said anything against new medical schools when there. Did you lose your voice ?
