Meredith Grey is awful

I’ve been unwell and recovering from major surgery for the last few weeks. My sister in law has always been into Greys Anatomy and recommended it as something to watch.

So firstly, I’m hooked and bombing my way through it. But it’s sort of turned into a hate watch as I find so many of the characters are just TERRIBLE people!

I’m on early season 5 so no spoilers if possible! But so far, my issues are:
-Cristina is an absolute bitch. I mean, a horrible, selfish, gives no shits person.
-How did her and Burke go from casual dating to moving in and nearly marrying in a matter of months? She was HORRIBLE to him and barely admitted any feelings-I do not get this relationship!

-Crisitna and Meredith are classic ‘mean girls’ to Izzy…they tease George, ice out Izzy and barely tolerate Alex. They’re like the popular kids at school who waltz around stuck up

-All the girls are just nasty to Callie who hasn’t done anything wrong. They laugh openly at their relationship and repeat confidences. And we’re supposed to be rooting for these girls?

-Derek and Meredith are ridiculous. She wants him, she doesn’t, she’s annoyed at him, constantly whining… then I realise the first 3 seasons are over 8 months (Addison mentions in series 3 she would have given birth if she had kept the baby she terminated 8 months earlier when she was living in NY)…! Whatttt?

-Meredith. Just insufferable! Whining all the time, indecisive, treats George awfully, is now terrible for Lexie and openly spiteful to her. Is she really the main character?

However, I am in love with Miranda Bailey-please tell me I won’t be let down!!!

And yet, I continue to watch!!

I absolutely hated Meredith. She got worse the further through you went.

I think they dragged it out far too long.

Callie and Mark are the absolute best! I didn't like her character at first and I think it's because she and George together never made sense to me.

I wasn't a fan of that Denny storyline but there is a rational explanation. Don't worry.

The actor who plays Owen was also in an episode of Father Ted. Highly recommended.

I love Greys but I've never understood how she is the main character and agree she is a hateful selfish person....sorry to say it gets much worse!

I have to say even though someone spoilt it for me upthread, I still found GO’s death shocking. I’m furious at Meredith again. Hiding the chiefs alcoholism and not telling anyone for 3 episodes so she could get in front with surgeries etc. then got furious with Derek for speaking to the board about him.

Izzy has abruptly left which was weird and sort of unresolved.

i still hate Yang. Sorry, I’m just not a fan. Maybe she’ll grow on me

And I adore mark and Callie’s friendship. I actually think that’s more pure than Cristina/meridith. His daughter has just shown up and Lexie and him are over-I hope they get back together as I liked them together

I'm mow on series 3 and meredith has nearly drowned. I'm sure she comes back to life....Cristina is pissing me off big time. The rest are just annoying in phases!

Ahhh you’ll get a lot of this. She routinely tries to die 😂

Yeah, it never ends, she's like a cat with nine lives except cats are cute.

Meredith is terrible! A very unlikeable person. Yet somehow I still watched and watched it. The later seasons get very hard to stomach, every episode rams some kind of 'issue' down your throat, to the point its not entertainment, its being lectured to. Enjoy these early seasons of pure drama while you can!

Yes.

There are a handful of episodes where someone else does a voiceover but that must be fewer than 10.

This is why I stopped watching in the end. Dealing with issues isn't new but it seems to be doing it so clumsily now. Past episodes have had some really powerful moments but you're right that the newer ones just feel like lectures. And it's totally pointless as I highly doubt anyone who needs to hear those lectures will sit and watch/listen to them. I got pissed off even when I fully supported whatever point they were trying to make.

Why did izzie say what she did to george in series 3? Selfish cow!

I’ve been slaving through the holier than thou episodes, but just watched the last ep of series 19 and it was so happy!

I'm up to series 7 now and just aghast at how awful Christina is as well as Meredith seeming to think she is everyone's moral compass. What derek does to richard is despicable and lexie giving mark the ultimatum was enraging!

I've watched Grey's so many times. It's actually one of the only medical shows I've watched that hasn't made me climb the walls, shouting "That's not how that works!" I mean, Drs acting as porters and doing their own scanning, and MRI scans taking 1 minute is all ridiculous, but the actual surgical details are pretty good.

I adore Christina. Meredith has had a hard life -she's working on it. Bailey is just wonderful. Alex is doing his best and he really shines when he shows he is willing to be responsible (no spoiler).

Burke is arrogant but sincere, I guess. At least he doesn't hide who he is. Izzy is irritating. George has some strong scenes. I get really annoyed by Torres.

But Grey's is still brilliant. I am rewatching at the moment and every so often my heart skips and I get a sudden flash of 'oooh we've got that storyline coming up!!"

I hate Burke. He pressures Cristina into marriage when it’s wrong for her, both in general as a person and in particular for the short amount of time they have been together.

I’m just starting season 8 and I still do not get the love for Cristina. She was so egotistical about saving Callie and so rude to Teddy. I just don’t get it 🤷🏻‍♀️

The musical episode was absolutely hilarious. The most bizarre thing I’ve seen on tv!

And Meredith has ruined the clinical trial but doesn’t seem to accept she’s done anything wrong and completely dismissive of the impact on the thousands of people because she stubbornly thinks she’s right.

Im really liking Teddy and Henry’s budding relationship

Cristina was obviously a really talented surgeon and amazing (in that universe) but when she left, suddenly Meredith was suddenly everything. Seemed convenient. Her mum was right, she seemed average.

Meredith gets worse, but also becomes less and less a main character. I just finished season 21 and I often wonder why she is still in it, she's rude, sulky and selfish and just comes across cold.
