Meredith Grey is awful

I’ve been unwell and recovering from major surgery for the last few weeks. My sister in law has always been into Greys Anatomy and recommended it as something to watch.

So firstly, I’m hooked and bombing my way through it. But it’s sort of turned into a hate watch as I find so many of the characters are just TERRIBLE people!

I’m on early season 5 so no spoilers if possible! But so far, my issues are:
-Cristina is an absolute bitch. I mean, a horrible, selfish, gives no shits person.
-How did her and Burke go from casual dating to moving in and nearly marrying in a matter of months? She was HORRIBLE to him and barely admitted any feelings-I do not get this relationship!

-Crisitna and Meredith are classic ‘mean girls’ to Izzy…they tease George, ice out Izzy and barely tolerate Alex. They’re like the popular kids at school who waltz around stuck up

-All the girls are just nasty to Callie who hasn’t done anything wrong. They laugh openly at their relationship and repeat confidences. And we’re supposed to be rooting for these girls?

-Derek and Meredith are ridiculous. She wants him, she doesn’t, she’s annoyed at him, constantly whining… then I realise the first 3 seasons are over 8 months (Addison mentions in series 3 she would have given birth if she had kept the baby she terminated 8 months earlier when she was living in NY)…! Whatttt?

-Meredith. Just insufferable! Whining all the time, indecisive, treats George awfully, is now terrible for Lexie and openly spiteful to her. Is she really the main character?

However, I am in love with Miranda Bailey-please tell me I won’t be let down!!!

And yet, I continue to watch!!

I started to rewatch a couple of months ago while sick - the early series were better, but maybe it was just that it was nice to see all the OG characters. There's been a lot of chopping and changing in the last few years, with new characters who feel like they'll be in for years only to drop out/die/move after a series.

I could never forgive Alex for being such a total dick in the first few seasons, I didn't believe in his redemption at all! Izzy and George my favourite characters, and I have a soft spot for Madison. Early Richard a much more interesting character then the one dimensional nice guy Uncle Richard he developes into in later series.

Derek is a selfish dick, Meredith not 'dark and twisty' but pretty bland, Christine would never be friends with her!

What Karev and Cristina are the best ones! Meredith grew on me as it went on. She does grow up a bit. Always found George a loathsome little weed.

Bailey is too dramatic for me.

I mean to be fair there’s like 25 seasons of the damn thing I can’t remember what was pre/post season 5

And if Meredith annoys you, wait till you meet Maggie. Now she drive me bonkers!!

Oh fuck, I'd forgotten about her. She was horrendous. Why did you have to remind me!!

I reallt enjoyed the beginning but, hopefully not a spoiler, everyone is awful in their own way at some point (and I'm nowhere near the current season). Some do become better people and tune out the nastiness to become more stable (as far as ive seen, but its quite possible they become awful again!

I got a little exhausted by what started to feel like continuous "finale" incidents; I know we are supposed to suspend reality but there was so much 😲 I felt the character stories got a little lost.

I’ve watched all of this and just started a rewatch, slightly ahead of you OP. Watching again I think the men are mainly pretty awful and abusive in the early series at least. I love Christina and Alex. I actually really like Meredith, it’s not just being brought up by her cold mother, it’s witnessing her mother’s attempted suicide in front of her and her father playing happy families with someone else. Everyone adult in her life has treated her badly and agree with PP that the friendship love with Christina is one of the best relationships I’ve seen on screen. George I hated, so wet. Also not keen on Izzy (though I loved her locker room rant at Alex in her bra - I thought she owned it and was terrific).
Private Practice is great (in the main) but I couldn’t get on with Station 19, and I hate the fact that in later Grey’s episodes you kind of need to be watching Station 19 at the same pace. (I don’t think this is a spoiler as not giving any details away).
But Burke - who the fuck walks out on a wedding day and leaves without ever saying goodbye or sorting the wedding present crap? What a fuckwit.

One of the worst things about Meredith is her little baby voice “Dewek”. Several of the female doctors have the breathy baby voices over the years and all I could think was that I’d never let someone with a voice like that perform complicated surgery on me!

Also, hate the way she ignores her patients when “Dewek” or any other love interest is around

You will love Alex and then hate him again!! Fuming about that!!

I know what you mean about Meridith though, she is a pain in the arse. The one who really gets my goat is Amelia! Dear god woman, just let yourself be happy!!

@Tagyoureit I've never heard anyone say they love Owen before. He has a good entrance but the way he treats women is appalling. I won't say too much for fear of spoilers but he is an awful awful man.

Owen has just rocked up - It's a fleeting visit but I guess he comes back and he seems just awful!

I'm definitely going to investigate Private Practice and Station 19

Oh yes Owen is an arse but Kevin Mckidd! 😍😍

I was quite taken with him during the icicle scenes. And there's a bit where he puts Derek and Mark in their place that I enjoyed too. But his character went rapidly downhill from there.

There is a sort of pilot for Private Practice which you will have already seen - where Addison goes to visit her old friends in LA. So you could start it any time but be careful not to watch too much. I just found this which tells you what to watch when...

Have you seen Dog Soldiers? That was the first thing I saw him in. I much prefer him with his real accent.

Christina Yang is my all time favourite character. She has me in stitches. She knows what she wants, is honest and says it how it is. She's fantastic.
Meredith is a bit meh, sometimes I like her sometimes she's annoying.
Derek is an arrogant twat.
Arizona is annoying.
Miranda Bailey is awesome.
I'm in love with Mcsteamy, and a little bit of Callie too even though I'm straight 😂.
I'm watching it all the way through for the second time and up to season 11 now.

Awwww op I’m so jealous you’ve got the rollercoaster ahead of you! I think it was in 2021 it suddenly occurred to me I could watch it all again (I’ve watched it “live” from when it first aired) and it was just as good as the first time round.

i love Meredith and Cristina. They are complicated characters but I like them both. It’s ok that they weren’t as close to the others - Izzy was always jealous of their friendship, but didn’t get that the childhood traumas brought them together without realising why. But neither of them owed Izzy anything more than they gave her.

I loved Izzy first time round, my latest time watching not so much. And when you think of the timeline for the Denny stuff it is a bit nuts! That said, I admire Katherine Heigl for the emotion she brought to those scenes and the chemistry she had with JDM was off the charts.

George I’ve also begun to dislike more - although when he apologises to Meredith for how he treated her, he went up in my estimation.

Callie I thought George’s friends were horrid to her. Although Meredith did try to bond with her. Izzy was awful - I think she’s a very jealous person.

Alex you were supposed to dislike, but he definitely grows on you. Love him after a few seasons!

Derek I loved initially but now I see how awful he is and how badly he treats Meredith. Toxic arse.

someone mentioned the musical - I didn’t like it first time. LOVED it second time when I understood what was happening and why (I too am a Buffy fan if my name didn’t give it away).

I love greys anatomy but Meredith is the worst, selfish, self obsessed character. My puppy is called Meredith after her - because she is also needy and technically a bitch.

In a few seasons they give Meredith a lobotomy. It’s the only explanation for the way she suddenly becomes much loved by everyone, and the pride of the hospital. I never worked out why she was lauded as such an amazing surgeon
and fwiw I can’t bear Owen 😂 simpering, breathy horrible man 😂

So Owen Hunt is now here to stay and clearly has some historic trauma. I am LOVING the new Callie/Mark friendship and glad they’ve paired her with someone who gets her and seems supportive.

Meredith continues being awful and assuming smugly she’s going to get the solo surgery then falls out with Cristina when she doesn’t get it.

But…what is this weirdness with Denny having sex with Izzy when he’s dead? I am confused by this and unsure if Greys is suddenly going down some mystical route. I’m not onboard with this at all

I too have recently started watching Greys Anatomy and have a few observations:

Why are there no paediatricians in Seattle? Adult doctors performing complex surgery on babies , that would never happen.

am I the only one that finds George really annoying?

I agree that Christina isn’t nice - at all.

Meredith is annoying but not as annoying as the one long bit of her fringe that always hangs in her eyes.

Why are all the female surgeons allowed to wear mascara/eye make up, Callie’s mascara must be an inch thick!

I prayed for a Tsunami throughout the beach episodes.
