Meredith Grey is awful

I’ve been unwell and recovering from major surgery for the last few weeks. My sister in law has always been into Greys Anatomy and recommended it as something to watch.

So firstly, I’m hooked and bombing my way through it. But it’s sort of turned into a hate watch as I find so many of the characters are just TERRIBLE people!

I’m on early season 5 so no spoilers if possible! But so far, my issues are:
-Cristina is an absolute bitch. I mean, a horrible, selfish, gives no shits person.
-How did her and Burke go from casual dating to moving in and nearly marrying in a matter of months? She was HORRIBLE to him and barely admitted any feelings-I do not get this relationship!

-Crisitna and Meredith are classic ‘mean girls’ to Izzy…they tease George, ice out Izzy and barely tolerate Alex. They’re like the popular kids at school who waltz around stuck up

-All the girls are just nasty to Callie who hasn’t done anything wrong. They laugh openly at their relationship and repeat confidences. And we’re supposed to be rooting for these girls?

-Derek and Meredith are ridiculous. She wants him, she doesn’t, she’s annoyed at him, constantly whining… then I realise the first 3 seasons are over 8 months (Addison mentions in series 3 she would have given birth if she had kept the baby she terminated 8 months earlier when she was living in NY)…! Whatttt?

-Meredith. Just insufferable! Whining all the time, indecisive, treats George awfully, is now terrible for Lexie and openly spiteful to her. Is she really the main character?

However, I am in love with Miranda Bailey-please tell me I won’t be let down!!!

And yet, I continue to watch!!

If you are really bothered about spoilers then I think this thread is a bad idea. 2 big spoilers already.

I went through phases with GA. Sometimes I ffwd the surgery scenes (you've seen one intestine, you've seen them all) and watched the people bits, then once the characters all went round the merry-go-round and slept with each other's ex partners, I would ffwd the people bits and watch the intestine cutting again.

Meredith remains my least favourite part of GA. Bailey remains the best.

Most of them are terribly flawed, fucked up individuals with a lot of trauma behind them. They’re great doctors but shitty human beings. Some grow , some change, some stay unapologetically as they were. Some don’t change and stay the same shitty, selfish and self absorbed twats , while desperately trying to pretend they’re not. That’s how Meredith gets worse.

The clinic was in place literally the next day. There was even a semi tongue in cheek comment about it!

I also assumed it was years but the episode where Mark was sad as the baby would have been born prompted Addison to comment that is was 8 months earlier when they were together, so before she appeared in Seattle. Would explain why they hadn’t progressed in 3 years as interns which is only supposed to be a year!

They are all flawed, as are all humans. Meredith is particularly annoying though.
Bailey and Christina are the best - I'd want them behind me.
I got as far as s 16 I think, so if you get trapped in a lift/collapsed car park with me in an earthquake/snowstorm/hurricane/shooter situation, I reckon I could do a tracheotomy if you need it (as long as I have a biro).

Cristina is my absolute favourite character. She is driven and ruthless and can come across as a bit of a bitch but, if you keep watching, you will see that she is actually one of the most caring characters on the show. If I had to pick someone from that universe to have my back it would be her (or Charlotte King from Private Practice).

Never liked Derek and Meredith. Izzie is also pretty awful. Miranda Bailey deserves your love! One thing I noticed when I re-watched the early seasons recently, every time Derek does something decent it's because Bailey tells him to! Left to his own devices he is an utter shit.

It can be ridiculous at times and many of the characters are deeply unlikable but it is a good watch. Not so much the recent seasons sadly.

Having a male lead called Derek made me double take. I know two British Dereks. The youngest is 82, the oldest is 96!

Yes, the comparison with Carrie in SITC is accurate. She has the same energy. Really annoying, selfish disguised as ‘quirky’

Izzy was my favourite, but there was something unforgivable and her name is mud in our house. Luckily we didn’t name DD1 Izzy as planned

I like the changes in Alex I’ve seen and slow revelation about his past. It’s so far just been drip fed that he’s had an awful upbringing and I liked to slow burn with Ava/Rebecca.

Interesting he is a dark horse

I was never keen on Meredith but I loved Cristina. Most them are really flawed and really unlikeable - Hunt is very much a Hunt. But I wouldn't expect to watch it and like all the characters. I loved Bailey too, and Helm. I think I made it to the beginning of the season with Kai and it just fell off a cliff, I haven't watched it since.

I dunno. I would have hoped ‘I’m on season 5 so no spoilers please’ would have been enough but I often forget on MN people don’t read!

As a character I loved Cristina - I don't think we'd be friends in real life though

Meredith not keen on (and the main character syndrome gets worse) - though I tend to give up after series 9

There are quite a few new characters in Season 6 and the Season 6 finale is edge of your seat amazing!

I wish I could have said all that without mentioning names but I don't know what seasons they all came on! It's definitely worth sticking with, so many good characters (even if they're not nice) and memorable moments for you to watch yet!

Bailey stays consistent.
Alex and Christina might grow on you (they are my favourite characters in the end)
Meredith is awful and at times I could barely watch it because she was so unlikeable.

I’ve watched it all the way through and am towards then end of another binge.

it gets better and the characters grow!

I've watched it all more than once and have just read this whole thread holding my breath for people to give you more and more spoilers! Don't read any more posts OP, I'd love to have the whole of greys stretching ahead of me again!

Never liked either meredith or derek, both insufferable.
She can't act for shit.
I watched the first seasons breastfeeding and so enjoyed it, but after the first few lost interest.

Always liked Bailey.

It's not a spoiler! There is a musical episode, and knowing there is going to be one at some point in the next 17 seasons doesn't spoil the viewers enjoyment of the show.
