Meredith Grey is awful

I’ve been unwell and recovering from major surgery for the last few weeks. My sister in law has always been into Greys Anatomy and recommended it as something to watch.

So firstly, I’m hooked and bombing my way through it. But it’s sort of turned into a hate watch as I find so many of the characters are just TERRIBLE people!

I’m on early season 5 so no spoilers if possible! But so far, my issues are:
-Cristina is an absolute bitch. I mean, a horrible, selfish, gives no shits person.
-How did her and Burke go from casual dating to moving in and nearly marrying in a matter of months? She was HORRIBLE to him and barely admitted any feelings-I do not get this relationship!

-Crisitna and Meredith are classic ‘mean girls’ to Izzy…they tease George, ice out Izzy and barely tolerate Alex. They’re like the popular kids at school who waltz around stuck up

-All the girls are just nasty to Callie who hasn’t done anything wrong. They laugh openly at their relationship and repeat confidences. And we’re supposed to be rooting for these girls?

-Derek and Meredith are ridiculous. She wants him, she doesn’t, she’s annoyed at him, constantly whining… then I realise the first 3 seasons are over 8 months (Addison mentions in series 3 she would have given birth if she had kept the baby she terminated 8 months earlier when she was living in NY)…! Whatttt?

-Meredith. Just insufferable! Whining all the time, indecisive, treats George awfully, is now terrible for Lexie and openly spiteful to her. Is she really the main character?

However, I am in love with Miranda Bailey-please tell me I won’t be let down!!!

And yet, I continue to watch!!

Derek was a popular name when I was in school. I’m in my 30s. I had several of them in my class.

I realised that I had to stop watching when I was willing her to die of covid.

In fairness, that season aired in 2008-9. It’s a bit like one of my undergraduates complaining about ‘spoilers’ in my lecture on Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca, published in 1938 and much adapted for screen.

It’s terrible. I was always a fan of ER (certainly the early seasons anyway) so thought this would be up my street. But, as you say, the characters were pretty vile, the storylines were way over the top to the point of incredulity, and - after a while - everyone just seemed obsessed with conceiving and / or having babies.

Of course it is. OP now knows something about an episode before she has watched it for herself, it's the very definition of a spoiler.

OP might not mind but if she does, well, it's a bit too late once she reads it.

Also in fairness though, it really isn't hard to avoid saying something about something such as a character death knowing OP has politely asked for no spoilers.

I don’t think them barely tolerating Alex in the first couple of seasons is that unreasonable tbh. He was a bit of a dick. Although he becomes one of my favourite characters.

I love Christina. Although sometimes she does go a bit far.

I’m surprised you like Izzy if you’re annoyed by a mean girls attitude towards Callie.

I don’t know what episodes things where from so I’ll be brief.

Izzy didn’t like her. Meredith is a product of a terrible childhood and is like marmite. Alex is a letch. Miranda is great and her and George together can be great! Not in a relationship that is. Dereks a knob his ex wife was an idiot but I think she was always too nice for him. Callie is Callie I started to dislike her at a certain point but unsure what series so won’t say why. Ginger doctor always seemed a pompous twat.

That’s my favourite bit of that episode.

Meredith doesn't get any better. She just whines constantly.

Alex is one to watch. I really liked how his character developed. His character was awful at the beginning but he changed a lot.

Callie is great. Lots of great storylines involving her as the series goes on.

I can't remember when Owen arrived but he's awful. There are other characters connected to Owen who are fucking awful too. Couldn't stand one in particular and had to fast forward every time she showed up on screen.

Couldn't stand Izzie and was relieved when her character finally fucked off.

Miranda is great.

Loved Cristina.

I think the whole point of it was that they are all deeply flawed and fucked up in their own way.

Oh and if you’ve not seen it OP, I really recommend private practice, the Addison spin off

To be honest I would have appreciated a warning before that episode. I spent the whole thing thinking I had somehow entered a parallel universe.

Yet, I am still watching and into season 22(?). I have loved them and hated them equally. :)

I've never even re-watched tbh. I absolutely loved the programme when I was watching it but I'd probably only seek out certain episodes like Silent All These Years, or when Denny was in it. I wouldn't have the patience to sit through a lot of Meredith's stuff again. The Covid series was grim.

Haha. I have literally just started watching it. I cant quite get my head around the characters yet but it seems clear to me that Cristina is ND. I love George and I think Meredith is ok at the moment.
Still on s 1 though so I guess there's time to change!

Bailey is always amazing, she never lets you down. You’ve got some great seasons coming up, I think 6 to 11 are the best season (I wasn’t an Izzy fan, although the others characters didn’t treat her well). There are some great characters you are yet to meet!

I also loved Christina, but hated her in the early seasons.

Some big spoilers on this thread so be careful if you are not wanting any.

If you love Bailey her character also appears in Station 19, which has fewer unlikeable characters.

All the series finales could simply not happen to 1 person in one lifetimes. Just absolutely not plausible. Part of why I stopped watching.

The Denny/Izzy storyline was just 😫 i love JDM but it was a crap story.

I loved the first few series but dropped off after S12 with Penny.

Private Practice with Addison as a spin off is good. Only 6 seasons so much shorter and more tolerable. And lots of babies always makes me happy.

This thread has just reminded me that I started watching it during Covid, then forgot all about it. I seem to remember hating Meredith, mostly because of the bad acting in the part of <can’t remember her name>

Izzy is the worst character ever. She's so pathetic and unlikeable and has no character growth. How she supposedly got through med school is a mystery. She does about one surgery
