Disaster holiday at resort

Happywifehappylife18 · 20/06/2025 15:35

Long story shortish,
me, my partner, son and MIL have paid a huge amount to stay in a resort this week. After the first night MIL had what we thought to be mosquito bites all over her arms and chest. They were blistering and weeping. Doctor gave her an injection antihistamine and directed us to stay in room for 72 hours. The very next morning MIL woke up with over 80 bites over her body, face, ears back and hands. Doctor confirmed it appeared to be bed bugs. Resort have moved MIL to another room however has now been told by doctor to avoid sunshine for another 72 hours. Meaning that 5 days of our holiday we have all been couped up in a room, and me and my partner have been taking turns in taking little one to the pool.

now we have found bites on our two year old. We’re not sure what to do. MIL is emotionally distressed and it’s so bad. The bites are so swollen and just everywhere, some have even popped so badly that her skin is raw.
am i being unreasonable to request a full refund from the resort as we have had a really horrifying experience

has anyone ever had this from a high end resort? .

Why are you in the room? Staying out of the sun doesn’t mean sitting in room.

Keep anti histamine use age up l, speak to insurance company. Ask hotel for details of their liability insurance. Did the room change mean that you got an upgrade?

Are there bites between fingers? Could it be scabies?

It sounds like the mil is actually v ill and probably would not be having a great time whether in the room or not.

saltnvinegarhulahoops · 20/06/2025 17:58

They can travel in luggage and clothes, so all your items will need to be washed at high temps, and i'd try to replace your bags. You don't want this coming home with you.

femfemlicious · 20/06/2025 18:04

Happywifehappylife18 · 20/06/2025 15:50

Well we have spoken to the hotel because they have moved our rooms. We spoke with the manager today who is doing their best to make us y while we are in the room. I made this thread to find out if I am being unreasonable or not to ask for a full refund.

Does the new room have bedbugs too?.I would be going home immediately if I were you

3luckystars · 20/06/2025 18:06

Do not bring them into your house!

DO NOT BRING THEM IN TO YOUR HOUSE.

Take off all your clothes outside and dump everything you can. Do not bring anything into the house after this holiday.

Roselilly36 · 20/06/2025 18:06

Its ruined your holiday, you should be compensated. our last holiday to the IKOS had a few problems, one being safety related, NOT bed bugs, but something that we reported that wasnt dealt with, they also completely forgot our very significant wedding anniversary, they immediately held they hands up and offered to help which was appreciated, but we were due to travel home the next day, they did offer compensation, which was kind but we would have much preferred a hassle free trip. We accepted it. But if I am honest it’s has atotally put us off returning, it’s a shame because we would have gone back and were even thinking a wedding there might be an option for our DS’. Don’t ever go back would be my advice. We returned within 6mths from our first visit, that was amazing, no complaints whatsoever. I think we were just very unlucky with our second trip, but when you are paying IKOS prices, it’s unacceptable. Your poor MIL I hope she is better soon.

twilightermummy · 20/06/2025 18:13

I'd go out and buy new clothes. Ask for them to be kept behind the front desk (not put in another of their rooms). Then, on my last day, I'd leave all of my things and get dressed into the new clothes in their public bathroom before dumping the clothes I was stood in.
I recognise that this would be gutting, especially if you bought new holiday clothes, but not a chance would I risk taking them home with me.

Also, do as much complaining to management whilst there because once home it will become more difficult. Keep receipts! I'm sorry to read that you've paid for the privilege of this. It's awful.

50lbstolose · 20/06/2025 18:16

This is awful.

We are in tenerefe, we stayed at this resort last year. In fact my partner proposed to me here exactly 1 year ago. So we came back to celebrate. Last year was amazing. This year has been an absolute shit show. The staff have been really good and brought us pitchers of cocktails and room service. But really we came to do activities and have family
memories. Unfortunately for MIL will
Probably have the scars to remember for rest of her life.
ATM we are trying to make the best of a bad situation and enjoy ourselves.

As soon as I saw this I thought Tenerife. My friends went in January to . they had several other friends staying in a different hotel that had a serious bed bug problem. They got moved..

Vinvertebrate · 20/06/2025 18:24

I got bedbugs in Paris and ended up having hospital treatment when they became infected. Luckily I have an ancient chest freezer in the garage (only really used at Xmas) and left all my luggage, bag, coat etc in there for several hours when I got home. It zapped any bugs.

I would not want the risk of bringing them back - they are total buggers to get rid of.

Hardtum · 20/06/2025 18:29

Your mil “woke up” to 80 bites

you mean she didn’t notice during the night whilst she was being nibbled on?

Sorry to hear this OP I could not cope at all if in this situation it would literally be my worst nightmare. I am booked to stay in the Bahia fantasia in Tenerife is this the same hotel?

No but it’s the same company! From what we are going through right now. Have a look on the internet to see if others have had this problem there. Honestly if I knew I would of gone somewhere else

@Fleetbug— is there any danger of traveling with bed bugs on clothing and these infecting the plane?

I'm assuming not if people are allowed to fly home. 🤔

3luckystars · 20/06/2025 18:32

They can also go into your neighbours property, I can’t stress this enough, do not bring them into your home, cost what it may.

Do whatever you need to do.

They are a nightmare to get rid of and will cost you so much time and money and maybe your sanity.

3luckystars · 20/06/2025 18:33

Keep them out of your home at all costs.

cheapshoes · 20/06/2025 18:36

Oh hell my daughter and her friends are headed to this hotel tomorrow. I really hope they're ok - its their first holiday as 18 year olds.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/06/2025 18:39

For PPs saying "speak to your rep" I'd say the chance of them not already being aware is nil - and yet holiday companies have gone on selling the hotel Hmm

Doubtless the hotel management have offered a flappy hand and jabbered that "it's all been sorted out", but with something like this you don't just assume the owners have done something ... you CHECK

Only clearly they haven't, since this has been going on since at least 2023

You don’t feel them when they bite, they numb you when they bite to suck your blood. The itching only starts later when the temporary numbness wears off.
They are evil fuckers.
I was bitten tens of times and didn’t feel them.

Which one are you at?
Do any of the TA reviews mention bed bugs?

PinkyBear · 20/06/2025 18:45

“Bed bugs don’t have teeth like we tend to think of them. Instead, they have structures in their mouths called stylets.
These stylets are thin, sharp, and designed to easily pierce the skin without people noticing. As the stylets enter the skin, the bed bugs inject an anesthetic that numbs the area so that you won’t wake up.

The insect also injects an anticoagulant, or blood thinner, as they feed. This makes it easier for them to eat, and it makes it even harder for you to notice strange sensations that would possibly wake you up.”

As I said - evil fuckers

What have you done to address this OP?

That’s helpful. Now she has a ruined holiday and somebody being sanctimonious to her on the internet.

Scarfitwere · 20/06/2025 18:49

I feel for you but Bahia are not high end, they specialise in sprawling mass produced all inclusive resorts that are about churning people through. Glad the staff there are being nice but you'll be best directing your complaint to the package provider you booked with, I'm assuming it was a package?

Oh, Bloody Hell. I really feel for you.., you must be nervous in any event. I 🤞🙏🤞🙏🤞they will be ok.

I would absolutely be contacting their tour operator pronto!! Mumsnet is very influential and if I were you, ( I have a DS18), I’d be calling/ Twitter/ Insta pointing out that there is at least one ACTIVE case right now on here! NOT OK it’s still ignoring the situation!

Can OP perhaps give an idea of where her original room is? The previous cases I’ve read about appear to have been in the ‘800’s block? I’ve never been there, so that doesn’t mean much to me, and obviously, the little bastards move.. but the hotel does appear to be unscrupulous and I would not be remotely surprised if that room is already being used…

Wishing they have a safe trip, avoid the little bed bug bastards.. and you are ok, too!

They’ve been found on train/tube seats so yes they absolutely do travel in clothing.
