To change my name from Elizabeth

awkwardasfuck · 18/06/2025 23:56

God I just hate it. It sounds like lizard. It's a Christian name meaning "loved by god" and I'm a staunch atheist. It was the Queens name and I'm firmly anti royal. It was my maternal grandmothers name and she was abusive to my mum, who, in turn, has passed that trauma and abuse onto me to the point where we are no contact. Ive always been called Lisa but I don't like that much either.

I've been going by Lis, pronounced "Liss" but what can I move to? Urgh.

Anything, pick what you want

Bollihobs · 19/06/2025 00:01

Well of course YANBU to change your name but most people who do will have another name in mind "I'm not an Elizabeth I've always felt like ......" the unreasonable bit is asking strangers to tell you what name to pick! I mean, if you really can't think of anything ask your friends, they know you! But yes, do it, change it!

Eenameenadeeka · 19/06/2025 00:03

How about Beth?

Mmmkaay · 19/06/2025 00:03

I've always liked the name due to its many variations - although I assume you've discounted all of them? What do you feel like being?

eurotravel · 19/06/2025 00:04

Beth Betty Liz Lizzie and more

glittercunt · 19/06/2025 00:06

Bethan
Elspeth
Eliza
Lindsay
Lissa
Eliana

That's just names that can be linked to, but aren't, your birth name.

ungratefulcat · 19/06/2025 00:09

Beth?
Libby (also short for Liberty)
Ellie
Elissa

Radionowhere · 19/06/2025 00:09

I've never made the lizard connection OP! 😆
Rhea and Violet however.... forever Diarrhoea and Violent to me.
Elizabeth is perfectly fine but a bit boring.
What names do me you like?

tequilam0ckingbird · 19/06/2025 00:13

I know someone called Elaine who hates her name. She goes by Elly. You could do similar.

I like the name Elizabeth myself but it's really up to you, it's your name :)

Trombelees · 19/06/2025 00:13

YANBU.

It sounds like you have come through a lot and got out the other side. Maybe a name to reflect that strength?

Casey? “Brave in battle”.

Finding a name you like and means something is really powerful.

MujeresLibres · 19/06/2025 00:14

Libby?

Snoodley · 19/06/2025 00:15

Do it!

ForFunGoose · 19/06/2025 00:16

Liza is a badass name
A world away from a Royal

KeyboardCat · 19/06/2025 00:17

Go nuts, change your name entirely - to something that YOU want to be. Deed poll is a blessing.

Wreckinball · 19/06/2025 00:18

Betty
Lizzo
Lyza
QE2

Itiswhysofew · 19/06/2025 00:18

Elizabeth's my 2nd name after my grannie. Wish it was my first, as I hate my first name, so I can appreciate your wanting to change yours.

Just do it. All you can do is hope that people will oblige.

Are you thinking of using one of the diminutives of Elizabeth, (82), or changing to a different name?

Libby
Tess
Zizi
Izzy
Elsy

PizzaSophiaLoren · 19/06/2025 00:19

Lissa? Eliza? Beth?

AliceMcK · 19/06/2025 00:28

If your wanting to stick with the name just use a nickname

Eliza
Betty ( I know old fashioned but I love it)
Beth
Lilly
Liz

Personally I go for something all together new especially given the connection to a traumatic life for you.

If I was to choose a new serious grown up name I’d go Oonagh, I love a good Irish name. Or complete opposite Emma, no idea why, I think because there were like 10 Emma’s I was friends with at school, I just like it.

If I was really petty and spiteful I would change my name to Pamela, my DFs first wife’s name that would give my toxic abusive mother the rage 😂

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 19/06/2025 00:36

Names that could potentially lead to Liss as a nickname:

Alice
Alyssa
Melissa
Elissa
Felicity
Ellis
Amaryllis (bit out there, but still)
Phyllis (maybe not..!)

Or just Liss? I think it could work well as an unusual first name.

SwedishEdith · 19/06/2025 00:36

I doubt anyone thinks of it as a Christian name. If you're known as Liss, change your name to Melissa, maybe? It will be very difficult to get people to call you a different name. I mean, they will to your face but will probably say, "You know, used to be Elizabeth".

retiredpickme · 19/06/2025 00:39

What about Elle

MrsMoastyToasty · 19/06/2025 00:40

Bette
Betty
Bess
Eliza
Liz
Lizzy
Libby
Beth

Daygloboo · 19/06/2025 00:40

Beth is a nice no nonsense name

PyongyangKipperbang · 19/06/2025 00:40

One of my DD's ended up with that name because her sperm donor (as he turned out to be ) objected to literally anything else. He once said to me ....verbatim quote..."Whats wrong with Claire or Sarah?" This was in 1997 not 1977.

In the family her name was one diminutive and her work name, another. Her DP calls her yet another!

That is the good thing about that name, there are so many options. Libby, Betty, Bet, Liz, Lizzy, Eliza, Liza, Ellie, Ella....so many.

MsAmerica · 19/06/2025 00:46

I've always considered "Elizabeth" to be the most versatile name of all!

Beth
Bess
Betty
Betsy
Eliza
Liz
Lizzie
Liza
Libby

And I had a friend who called herself "Elle."
