To change my name from Elizabeth

God I just hate it. It sounds like lizard. It's a Christian name meaning "loved by god" and I'm a staunch atheist. It was the Queens name and I'm firmly anti royal. It was my maternal grandmothers name and she was abusive to my mum, who, in turn, has passed that trauma and abuse onto me to the point where we are no contact. Ive always been called Lisa but I don't like that much either.

I've been going by Lis, pronounced "Liss" but what can I move to? Urgh.

Although now I do feel Balonz might be the one! 🤣

I'm thinking of just moving away from Elizabeth in all it's forms to be honest, I've never liked it, or Lisa, or any of the dims since I was old enough to know what my name is.

I don't know how many other people go through that but I feel ready to change entirely.

Calista or Lis still for short as suggested up thread kind of speaks to me

I changed entirely, so relieving honestly not that much of a faff and after like the first month there was no accidental wrong name issues.

Since you also don’t like your middle name, why not take up both suggestions and rename yourself
Calista Balonz
😊

I think this is the only answer!

There's always Buffy!

Loads of good suggestions here. Do it! I’d go for Beth personally. Or Libby. Or Betsy. Which one feels more ‘you’ though?

I'm not keen on keeping the Elizabeth at all nut out of all of them I do like Libby (although it does make me think of the sabrina the teenage witch antagonist 🤣)

I know an Elissia who is sometimes called Liss. Go for it, enjoy whatever new name you pick!

seven201 · 20/06/2025 10:26

Alyssa also nice

Calista is a lip balm. You could end up being called Lippy. I'd be more inclined to change my perception of my name & become the wonderful Elizabeth rather than change my name.

I'd then be copying my cousins name as well as using the name of someone who was quite a bully to me - I also really don't like the name in general

Fair enough and apologies if I have brought up bad or worse memories.

No need to apologise! It's a coincidence!

You can dislike and change your name for whatever reason you like. But using "It was the Queen's name and I'm anti royal" is daft. Many perfectly nice women are called Elizabeth - it's my middle name (I can be a bit of a mare, mind) and my oldest school friend's first name (she is frequently a lot of a mare - perhaps you have a point)...

Not quite what she said though is it ? It was a family name & she wasn't close to those family members + socially it's known as royal name & she's not a big fan of the royal family

Did you not see I was joking...?

How about Isla? It’s not related and has an entirely different sound but sort of looks a bit in the same family,
